For instance, while carnivorous moles primarily consume worms and insects, herbivorous voles primarily consume plant roots, seeds, and bulbs. Although other animals can gain access to bulbs through mole tunnels, gardeners with a persistent mole problem may easily blame the moles for a paucity of spring bulbs when another animal is to blame.

Emphasis should be placed on bulbs that animals avoid in areas where animal damage is common. Animals are poisoned by daffodils in all of their parts, and they dislike the pungent smells that allium bulbs and foliage emit. Some bulbs, including Puschkinia and squill, are vulnerable to soil disturbance brought on by tunneling animals. Other, less sensitive bulbs, particularly those in heavy, clay soils, can gain from the soil aeration brought about by a tunneling mole.

Mulching
