The best conditions for hydrangeas to keep hydrated come from good soil preparation before planting, which includes using plenty of compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure to increase the soil’s ability to retain moisture before planting.
The best course of action, however, is to soak the surrounding soil with a hose for at least 10 minutes if your hydrangea is established and withering, and then cover the soil with a 1 inch layer of mulch.
Compost, leaf mold, and well-rotted manure are excellent water-holding materials for mulching, retaining soil moisture while maintaining the soil’s porous, friable structure, which is ideal for producing hydrangeas.
The plant should recover in a day or two with a good soak and liberal amount of mulch applied around it.
Hydrangeas prefer partial shade with some diffused light throughout the day because they naturally grow beneath the shade of trees.
Your hydrangea’s roots may be contending with the roots of nearby shallow-rooted species, such pine trees, for moisture.
As a remedy, you can either transplant the hydrangea or mulch it twice a year (in the spring and the fall). You can also give your hydrangea a nice soak once a week to keep it from withering.

Pruning

Bamboo Stakes

Trellises must be buried in the ground without endangering your hydrangeas’ roots.
How is a hydrangea tree supported?
With a soft plant tie, secure the hydrangea stem to the stake 18 inches above the ground, right below a leaf. Should my hydrangea tree be pruned?
Depending on the kind you have, you must prune your hydrangeas correctly. Different hydrangea varieties need to be pruned at various times of the year.
For instance, you should hold off on pruning smooth hydrangeas like Annabelles until they are through blooming. All summer long, new blooms will result from pruning done in the late fall or early spring, before new growth starts.

You may be wondering how to ensure that your shrubs remain secure over the winter due to the unpredictable nature of the weather. I am aware that I am in Georgia. So I asked Ryan McEnaney of Bailey Nurseries the most important winter care issues for hydrangeas, and fortunately, the answers are straightforward:
Is there a time or temperature when it’s “too late” to winterize hydrangeas?
Any form of protection is beneficial. Winter months bring a wide range of temperatures, so if you’ve already experienced any really chilly spells, some harm may have already been done. Despite this, continue to preserve it to ward off any potential threats in the months to come.
Will mulch prevent plants from heaving? Is there a type of mulch that is better for winterizing plants? When spring returns, do I need to remove the mulch?
Plants in the ground and in containers benefit greatly from mulch during the winter. Beyond providing general security, the mulch’s role is to establish an environment that is more consistent with what is going on outside. Temperatures can change from -10 to 30 degrees in some areas of the nation within a week or two. As a result, the root system is disrupted as water molecules in the ground freeze (contract) and then defrost (expand) (heaving). Mulch aids in minimizing those abrupt alterations to safeguard the plants. We advise using wood mulch, oak leaves, or pine straw.
To prevent damage from late spring, wait until after your last frost date to [remove to the mulch]. However, don’t wait too long as heat can develop moisture, which can cause the stems to rot in the absence of air flow.
How long should a hydrangea tree be staked?
To stake or not to stake is the question, with all due respect to Shakespeare and Hamlet. Too many gardeners opt for the former solution when staking trees. A young tree occasionally appreciates some mechanical assistance, but not as frequently as many gardeners think. Furthermore, staking usually only benefits a newly planted tree for a brief time, even when it does.
It can be more detrimental to stake a tree than beneficial. The trunk is strengthened by movement because it thickens and acquires a tapered shape from bottom to top. Root growth is also promoted by trunk movement. Therefore, despite the fact that staked trees may reach their full height more quickly than their un staked counterparts, they have weaker trunks and less established root systems.
Staking improperly exacerbates the issues with a young tree. A tree may girdle if it is attached to a stake too tightly, which could weaken or even kill the tree if the issue is not fixed right away. When a tree moves over a point where it is connected too closely to a stake, just like an unstaked trunk moves, the trunk above the tie thickens. The smooth movement of water and nutrients up and down the developing trunk is disrupted by this disparity in thickness. A plant can be tied down so tightly below the tie by a stiff stake and a tie that a strong wind can actually blow the tree’s top off. Another difficulty is when a tree is tied to a stake too loosely. The bark is continually rubbed, leaving scars that might never completely mend.
Should this tree be staked? Given the tree’s height, the root ball is small and will not be able to support the tree adequately. The author emphasizes how tall the tree needs to be to support a root ball this huge. So you should definitely bet this one.
Crowbar Hole
A trunk’s top must flex, but if the bottom flexes excessively, it may create a “crowbar hole,” where water and moisture may pool and possibly lead to rot. A stake can stop this motion.
Stakes allow a root ball to become a root system
A figure-eight-looped bicycle tire inner tube is fastened to the tree. It offers stable but adaptable support.
But sometimes staking a tree is beneficial. A young tree with an abundant leaf canopy and an abnormally small root ball will almost certainly need a stake. A tree can be staked in this manner to keep its root ball immobile in the ground. The roots can expand into the surrounding soil while the tree is temporarily stabilized artificially, anchoring the tree and providing it with more long-term, natural stability.
In addition to causing a root ball to sway back and forth instead of being stationary, strong winds flowing through a dense crown of leaves can also cause problems. This excessive motion could cause a “crowbar hole, a space that forms around a tree’s base where water gathers and may lead to root rot. I grab the trunk of a recently planted tree and rock it back and forth, looking for shifting soil at the base of the tree, to see whether the roots are moving. I can use staking to solve a problem if I notice movement. A stake will aid in maintaining the trunk’s position long enough for it to acquire the necessary thickness and taper to obstruct such movement. I regularly check the ground where the trunk emerges in the weeks and months after any tree is planted to see if a crowbar hole is forming.
Additionally, staking a tree might provide safety. A few well-placed stakes can stop a lawnmower from repeatedly striking a tree trunk and abrading its bark. Of course, you won’t need to mow close to the tree if you have mulched the area around it with wood chips or another form of mulch. A ring of mulch or pegs serves as a signal if you have planted a tree that is susceptible to soil compaction, such as a sugar maple or white oak “Stay off this area. A trunk needs at least three stakes encircling it to be protected.
A well-staked tree should be able to move in place
Any young tree support should allow for some trunk movement as well as unrestricted top movement without producing abrasion where the tie makes contact. The top of the tree won’t be able to move enough if a tie is positioned too high (more than two-thirds of the way up the trunk). Use just one tie per stake to allow the lowest part of the trunk to move as it should.
The optimum material for a tie is elastic because it permits movement at and below the point of attachment while maintaining a firm enough hold on the trunk to prevent abrasion. An example of this would be the inner tube of a bicycle tire. Nylon stockings and elastic webbing are additional suitable tying materials. It is recommended to tie any of these materials in a figure-eight loop between the trunk and the stake to prevent the trunk from rubbing against it. Because it can’t grab the trunk securely without eventually girdling it, the conventional method of tying involves utilizing wire that has been cushioned with a length of garden hose.
Wooden posts, metal pipes, and lengths of metal rebar make excellent stake materials. I’ve also used fiberglass posts that are offered for use with electric fence to stake down small trees. These posts have the extra benefit of being flexible itself. Stakes should be sturdy enough to offer whatever support is required, but they shouldn’t be too big or positioned so that the trunk of a tree is overly shadowed. In the absence of this, the trunk will inevitably sag away from the stake.
For a little tree with a trunk smaller than a couple of inches in diameter, one stake may be sufficient. Use two or three stakes and tie each one to the trunk independently for a larger tree with a diameter of up to 4 inches.
Stakes should be temporary, the more so the better
Even when staking is required, it is best to remove the stakes as soon as possible so that the plant may grow a sturdy trunk and root system. I usually take the pegs out of small trees after a year, but larger trees may need them left in place for two years. By moving the tree’s trunk and looking to see if the root ball moves, you can determine if a stake can be removed. The stake is no longer necessary if there is no movement. But there are some: For instance, some dwarf apple trees need to be staked periodically throughout their lives. However, for the majority of trees, forgetting about it, allowing ties perhaps encircle a trunk, or simply keeping the stakes in place for too long might impede the growth of a solid trunk.
