A giant soft scale species known as tuliptree scale can infest landscape trees such as poplar, magnolia, and tulip poplar.
As female tuliptree scales develop, they grow spherical and can give the appearance of warts on limbs. They also attract black sooty mold and produce a lot of honeydew.

Scale insects are “sucking pests,” which means they siphon plant juices with a mouth resembling a needle. Control
