On lilac, powdery mildew is quite prevalent and challenging to totally eradicate. It’s critical that there be good airflow. Remove a third of the oldest branches as far down as you can cut them when it blooms the following year. That may be useful, but it is not a cure. This fall, tidy up any leaves and dispose of them in the trash. As soon as the plant starts to leaf out in the spring, spray it with an organic fungicide that has powdery mildew written on the label. Just adhere to the guidelines.
The good news is that lilacs are not killed by powdery mildew. Summers that are dry are always worst because big rains wash some of the mildew spores away. In fact, experiments conducted at Cornell University a few years ago revealed that a weekly application of a hard stream of water to lilac leaves was just as effective as using commercial fungicides! However, the majority of individuals choose to just assume that their plants have gray leaves in the late summer. Give away the lilac and grow one of the flowering shrubs that don’t suffer from leaf infections if it really concerns you.
What causes lilacs to get powdery mildew?
Have you ever noticed how many lilac leaves are more white than green at this time of year? The powdery mildew fungus is what gives things their whitish appearance. The “powder” is white and is made of fungus (mycelium and spores).
White spots on leaves typically start to appear in the middle of summer and get bigger as the season goes on. The entire leaf may become white by late summer or early fall. Clestitothecia, or tiny spots, occur on leaves in the fall. Particularly noticeable are these fungus formations on lower leaf surfaces.
Powdery mildew seldom harms lilac plants and typically just poses an aesthetic issue. Like many illnesses, the best method to manage powdery mildew is to avoid it in the first place. There are cultivars and varieties that are disease-resistant. It is beneficial to remove dead leaves from established plantings in the fall. This will aid in lowering the quantity of fungal inoculum that overwinters. Enhance sunshine and airflow as much as you can. Disease development is favored by crowded, shaded, and moist environments.
Chemical control measures are typically not necessary because the condition is rarely serious. Fungicides (such as Funginex, Cleary’s 3336, Strike, or Bayleton) must be used as directed on the label and should be applied as soon as the disease first manifests.

What Is Powdery Mildew?
Numerous plant species are afflicted by the fungal disease known as powdery mildew. Each of the numerous varieties of powdery mildew infects a variety of different plants. Cucurbits (pumpkins, cucumbers, melons), nightshades (tomatoes, eggplants, peppers), roses, and legumes are some of the garden plants that are frequently impacted (beans, peas).
A layer of mildew made up of several spores develops on the top of the leaves when the fungus starts to take over one of your plants. The wind then spreads these spores to other plants. If the infection is serious enough, powdery mildew can stunt the growth of your plant and lower fruit yield and quality.
How Does Powdery Mildew Spread?
Powdery mildew spores often blow into your garden with the wind, but if you’ve previously experienced outbreaks, new outbreaks could potentially result from dormant spores in surrounding weeds or old vegetative material.
Even though it needs relatively high relative humidity (i.e., humidity around the plant) to spread, powdery mildew does well in warm, dry areas (60–80F / 15–27C). It does not spread as quickly in cooler, wetter locations, and it is also hindered by temperatures above 90F. (32C). Additionally, plants in shaded places are typically more impacted than those in broad sunlight.
How to Identify Powdery Mildew
- Plants with powdery mildew infection resemble they have been flour-dusted.
- On leaves, stems, and even on fruit, powdery mildew normally begins as round, powdery white patches.
- The upper portion of the leaves are typically covered in powdery mildew, although it can also develop on the undersides.
- The most vulnerable foliage is the young foliage. The leaves dry out and turn yellow.
- Some leaves may twist, shatter, or become deformed as a result of the fungus.
- The majority of the leaves or other damaged parts will be covered with the white patches caused by powdery mildew.
- The growing tips, buds, and leaves will also develop defects. Typically, these signs show up at the end of the growth season.

How to Prevent Powdery Mildew
The best method of eradicating powdery mildew, as with many other diseases and pests, is proactive prevention.
- For your garden, pick plants that can withstand powdery mildew. Cucurbits (melons, cucumbers, squash, etc.) have many mildew-resistant varieties that are available from major seed providers.
- Plant where there is more sunlight because powdery mildew tends to grow more frequently in shaded regions.
- To improve air circulation around your plants and lower relative humidity, selectively prune crowded spots.
- Spores on leaves can be removed with the use of overhead irrigation. It’s best not to rely on this as a preventive measure, though, as moist foliage can frequently lead to the development of other common diseases.
Homemade Prevention
Powdery mildew can be effectively treated using sulfur, lime-sulfur, neem oil, and potassium bicarbonate, among other organic fungicides. When given before infection or as soon as disease symptoms appear, these are most beneficial.
- Many gardeners have demonstrated that baking soda works well to treat powdery mildew. Add 1 quart of water to 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Thoroughly mist plants because the solution only kills fungus that comes into touch with it.
- A further efficient home treatment is milk spray. Spray roses with milk that has been diluted with water (usually 1:10) at the first indication of infection or as a preventative step.
Fungicides
There are several fungicides that are highly efficient with low toxicity, no residue, and long duration, especially for rose plants. Triadimefon is one case in point. It can be sprayed 1000–1200 WP of 15–% wettable powder once every 10 days for a total of 23 times. However, you should ask your neighborhood nursery about fungicides that are legal there.
How to Control Powdery Mildew
Concentrate on preventing the illness from spreading to other plants because it is very difficult to eradicate it if plants are severely afflicted. Remove and destroy any fruit, stems, or foliage that has been contaminated. You can either burn them or dump them in the trash. Any plant that has been affected should not be composted because the illness might still be carried by the wind and linger in the composted materials.
Avoid touching healthy leaves with pruning shears after removing sick areas. Pruners should first be cleaned with rubbing alcohol.
How is lilac fungus treated?
Portland, Oregon – Do the fresh blooms and branches on your lilac plant resemble burnt wood from a blowtorch? Lilac blight is a bacterial plant disease that could affect your bush.
Lilac blight is more likely to occur in a cool, wet, rainy spring, especially if there has been a late frost or other winter damage. Plant pathologists at Oregon State University Extension are cautioning that this year may be favorable for the disease.
Lilac bacterial blight, as the disease is officially known to plant pathologists, is brought on by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. Syringae. The bacterial blight that affects pear, blueberry, cherry, maple, and many other woody plants is caused by the same organism, and the symptoms of lilac blight resemble those of fire blight in fruit trees.
Initially, leaves appear to be in full health, but a short while later, they appear to have an open flame nearby. Young shoots with dark black stripes on one side demonstrate the disease’s progression. Unopened flower buds turn black and the blossoms fade, turning brown.
Never fertilize after the growing season has ended. Don’t fertilize young plants excessively.
Lilac blight is challenging to eradicate, therefore anytime you plant new lilacs, it is advised that you use blight-resistant kinds.
In order to prevent friction and allow air to easily circulate between the plants, it also helps to space and clip your lilac plants. Never fertilize after the growing season has ended. Melodie Putnam, an OSU Extension plant pathologist, advised against overfertilizing young plants since excessive nitrogen levels encourage the development of diseases.
If your lilac bush does have an infection, immediately cut and burn all affected areas. A copper sulfate spray applied in the early spring each year should help stop the issue before the buds start to open.

Bacteria that cause lilac blight can overwinter on good wood or sickly twigs. Plants are more susceptible to the illness when they are weak or injured by factors such as wounds, frost damage, soil pH, inadequate or poor nutrition, and infection by other diseases.
Old cankers, healthy buds, leaf surfaces, and adjacent weeds and grasses can all be sources of this disease. The bacteria were dispersed by wind, rain, insects, tools, and diseased nursery stock.
In western Washington, some lilac species, including S. josikaea, S. Komarowii, S. microphylla, S. pekinensis, and S. reflexa, have demonstrated resistance. The majority of S. vulgaris cultivars are prone to the illness, however others, like “Edith Cavell,” “Glory,” “Ludwig Spaeth,” and “Pink Elizabeth,” have been seen to be less afflicted when grown in gardens. Be aware that ‘Ludwig Spaeth’ is quite vulnerable in systems with large nursery production.
If your lilac bush does have an infection, immediately cut and burn all affected areas. Early in the spring, apply copper sulfate to the ground.
As young shoots form in the early spring, the disease first appears as brown blotches on their stems and leaves. The area may also have a yellow halo surrounding it. Especially when it rains, spots quickly turn dark and spread out. The age of the plant component that was damaged determines how far the infection can spread.
On immature stems, the infection encircles and girdles the stem, causing the shoot to crook at the lesion and the sections above it to wilt and die. On mature wood, lilac trees do not get infected; only cherry trees do.
Young, infected leaves quickly become black, first at the margin and then down to the petiole in a wedge-shaped pattern. The leaf eventually withers completely. Spots on older leaves slowly grow. The margin or the mid-vein of the leaf may crumple when numerous areas occasionally run together. Additionally, flower clusters may become diseased, quickly blighted, and darkened. Buds may not open properly or they may turn black and die soon after they do. The signs are the same as those of a winter injury.

Why are my lilac branches covered in a white substance?
A grayish-white covering on the foliage is an indication of the common lilac disease powdery mildew.
I have a lilac that has some sort of white fungus all over it. It appears to have received snowfall. I was going to remove it because I haven’t had a lilac bloom in three years. Is there anything I can do about it, and what’s wrong with it?
A: Powdery mildew, a fairly prevalent fungal disease on lilacs, is what that sounds like.
It affects some types more than others, and depending on the weather, it gets worse some years than others.
High humidity is ideal for powdery mildew growth, and particularly so in moist, shady areas and on densely packed plants (which makes it harder for the leaves to dry out after rain or in humid conditions).
The good news is that lilacs are rarely killed by this disease. However, it may weaken the plant, diminish bloom quality, and make it appear unsightly starting in mid-summer.
First and foremost, I’d trim out any too dense growth. Starting with the oldest branches and those that are emerging from the same location and ramifying shoots into one another, trim up to one-third of the branches.
After the plant flowers in late spring, it is the best time to do it. You’ll sever the already-formed flower buds if you do it now, over the winter, or in the first few weeks of spring. However, since you’re not getting many/any flowers anyhow, you may prune in the winter when it’s easier to see the branches.
If the plant is growing too tall, you can also trim the remaining branches during this pruning.
By promoting new shoots from the base, this type of thinning not only improves air circulation but also revitalizes the plant. The branches that are 2 and 3 years old typically blossom the most.
With annual rejuvenation trimming in the spring, lilacs often bloom at their peak throughout time. You will always have wood that is no older than three years if you remove one-third of the oldest shoots each year and let an equal number of fresh shoots replace them.
Sunlight is another element to take into account. If your lilac is in too much shade, moving it to a brighter place should help with flowering and disease prevention since lilacs grow and flower best in full light.
By thinning down the tree’s branches and/or eliminating some of its lowest limbs, you can combat a nearby tree that is expanding and casting more shade every year.
A helpful anti-disease care advice is to get rid of as many diseased and falling leaves from the lilac as you can. This gets rid of disease spores that might survive the winter and attack the plant again the following year.
If you’ve been watering your lilacs from above, stop doing that as well. If necessary, water the ground—but never over the foliage.
Since it usually doesn’t destroy plants, you shouldn’t need to spray for it. Fungicide sprays can reduce or stop powdery mildew if everything else fails and you’re really sick of the sparse blossoms and unsightly leaves.
The sprays must be used early in the season or as soon as an infection appears, and they must be repeated every 14 days (or more) as long as the disease circumstances are favorable. While triforine is a potent chemical fungicide against powdery mildew, sulfur and neem oil are two excellent organic fungicides. For precise application instructions, always refer to the label.
There are kinds of lilac that do an excellent job of naturally resisting powdery mildew if you opt to pull your uncooperative lilac.
The three traditional French kinds “Charles Joly,” “Sensation,” and “President Lincoln” typically score highly for disease resistance.
Tinkerbelle, Bloomerang, and ‘Josee,’ as well as several of the other new dwarf varieties, are mildew-resistant dwarf Korean lilacs.
