Inspection and removal of these hungry caterpillars from your geranium plants on a regular basis is the simplest and most efficient technique to control them. The optimum time of day to accomplish this is at dusk because that is when they are most active. Bring a container of soapy water with you, and submerge them. In the pots or garden areas where you cultivate sensitive species, use fresh soil every year because the insect pupates in overwintering soil. Alternately, rotate your crops every year and grow something that geranium budworms won’t eat.
On or near geraniums, petunias, and nicotiana, stay away from using broad-spectrum pesticides (or any other plants). The populations of helpful budworm parasites and predators (such tiny beneficial wasps) that assist regulate budworm numbers will be harmed by these pesticides.
Use fertilizer and water wisely. Only water your plants when the top of the soil feels dry, and only then should you water deeply—about 6 inches deep. Never allow your geraniums to become wet since this increases their susceptibility to disease and pests. Use an all-purpose, water-soluble fertilizer and mix two teaspoons into one gallon of water to feed geraniums every three weeks.
Cut off any dried-out or dead foliage and wilting blossoms. Trim and get rid of any damaged foliage. Keep leaves and other plant debris away from the area around the plant.
What spray gets rid of budworms?
The budworm can be killed by almost any insecticide while it is actively feeding, but the moth or pupa won’t be affected. The budworm is attacked by a bacteria called spinosad (spin-OH-sid) at every stage of its development. Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew is the product that contains spinosad that is most well-known. My flowers have budworms; how do I get rid of them?
The key to budworm management is time. Treatment after hatching does little to reduce population size since the larvae spend the most of their time inside the buds where they feed, which protect them. Permethrin, esfenvalerate, cyfluthrin, and bifenthrin are a few examples of synthetic pesticides that require fewer applications because they persist longer in the environment. Horticultural oil was once restricted to use only during the dormant season since it contained heavy petroleum that could harm newly sprouting foliage. Every year, we receive several inquiries on the causes of tiny holes in the leaves, petals, and buds, as well as why some people’s petunias and geraniums have ceased blooming. The issue typically only last for six to eight weeks, although in some regions of the nation it is a year-round issue. Heliothis virescens, also referred to as the Tobacco Budworm, Geranium Budworm, and Petunia Budworm, is the bug responsible. It is a single brown moth that frequently flits among the plants at dusk.
The caterpillars that hatch from those seemingly innocent moth eggs every evening assault the budding flowers and flower buds. It also works to control tomato hornworms, army worms, and any other caterpillar issues. Simply avoid using it in areas where you grow plants like parsley or dill to feed caterpillars because it can also kill those beneficial caterpillars, which is something you definitely wouldn’t want.
You must reapply DiPel because it is a powder, thus you should do so after every rain or overhead watering. The less damage you observe in your yard, the faster you can identify the issue. This solution is also available in liquid spray form, which may be a little simpler to use and leave less obvious residue on your plants. The caterpillars will stop feeding 24 hours after ingesting the DiPel, at which point they will die. It is easy to use, safe, and effective.

Numerous garden flowers produced in Colorado can occasionally be seriously harmed by the tobacco budworm (Chloridea virescens), a pest. Due to its frequent host, the geranium, the worm is known locally as the “geranium budworm.” Another typical host is nicotiana, followed by petunia. Occasionally, flowers like roses, snapdragons, verbena, and many more suffer damage.
The Denver metro area and Grand Junction are where issues are most prevalent in Colorado. This insect is one of the most destructive agricultural pests in the country, especially in cotton and tobacco. The maize earworm (Helicoverpa zea), a related insect that is a frequent pest of sweet corn and fruiting plants, may be similar to the caterpillars (e.g., peppers, tomatoes).
Life History
A moth with an adult’s wingspan of roughly 1 1/2 inches is what it looks like. The wings have a light green tint with some wavy, cream-colored stripes and gray or brown undertones. The female moths lay their eggs on buds or leaves when they are active in the early evening.
The overall color of tobacco budworm caterpillars can vary greatly. Although red, green, and light brown larvae also exist, dark variants are more typical. Differences in color might be partially explained by the hue of the flowers that the insects are eating.
In about a month, the caterpillars reach full size, bury themselves in the ground, and go through a pupal stage. Two generations are typically created annually, with adults emerging to continue the cycle. The insects enter a condition of halted development (diapause) near the end of the season when day length and temperatures drop, which they keep up through the winter.
The insect is so inadequately prepared for Colorado’s severe winters. The tobacco budworm pupates underground, typically 2 to 6 inches deep, inside a tightly packed earthen cell that the full-grown caterpillar creates. Pupae that are overwintering typically die if exposed to temperatures below 20° F.
Winter survival is most successful in areas with warm soil microclimates, such as those found around the foundations of heated structures. The quantity of tobacco budworms that overwinter and the risk of issues are, in general, correlated with how harsh the winter before was.
Controlling Tobacco Budworm in Garden Plantings

You can avoid issues by using plants that are resistant to tobacco budworm. Compared to zonal kinds (Pelargonium x hortorum), which have sticky hairs on buds and leaves, ivy-leaved geraniums (Pelargonium peltatum), which have smooth leaves, are far less commonly injured. There are some variations in this insect’s susceptibility across petunia varieties.
The most practicable form of management for minor crops is manually plucking the caterpillars. Although some caterpillars may be on plants throughout the day, the majority hide at the base of the plants and only climb up them at nightfall and early evening. Using a flashlight, one should be able to find several of the caterpillars during an evening search.
In between growing seasons, keeping potted plants in safe spaces, such garages, can help tobacco budworm pupae survive in the soil. If sensitive perennial host plants, such as potted geraniums, are kept in between growing seasons, the soil should be removed to get rid of pupae, and the plants should then be repotted before the winter.
Insecticides. It can be challenging to use insecticides to manage the tobacco budworm. In buds that insecticide sprays cannot reach, a lot of feeding takes place. Additionally, if sprays are used during the day, many caterpillars will go unnoticed because most feeding takes place at night. Applications for tobacco budworm should be sent in the evening, ideally at dusk.
The insecticides that have some residual activity and can kill caterpillars for several hours or days are the most efficient at controlling tobacco budworm. Spinosad and certain pyrethroid insecticides are among them (Table 1). Pyrethrins, insecticidal soaps, and the systemic insecticide imidacloprid are examples of garden insecticides that are ineffective against tobacco budworm.
When plants are in bloom and attractive to pollinating insects, especially bees, using insecticides might be challenging. Any time bees are visiting a flowering plant, no insecticides may be administered to the plant.
Some pyrethroid pesticides can be dangerous to bees for a day or longer after application, which puts bees at particularly high risk. Pyrethroid pesticides shouldn’t be applied to plants with bee-attractive flowers.
When using insecticides and pollinators conflict, there are two approaches for controlling tobacco budworm on plants. Spinosad application after dark, when bees are not actively feeding, is one of these. If sprays are allowed to dry and pollinators do not arrive within three hours of treatment, spinosad can safely protect pollinating insects.
Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki is the alternative (Bt). This is a microbial insecticide that only kills caterpillars that ingest it, being selective in its effects on insects. The efficiency of Bt for control can fluctuate between different plants since it only functions if a tobacco budworm caterpillar eats a portion of the plant that is coated with Bt sprays or dusts. Bt will probably be ineffective on plants like geranium where the caterpillars dig into the buds and eat little of the exterior surface. Bt is most likely to be effective on plants like petunia where the caterpillars heavily eat the leaves or blooms. All Bt pesticide applications should be applied late in the day because they break down quickly (hours) in sunshine.
Table 1 lists some insecticides that are effective against tobacco budworm in flower beds. Products that are sold at retail stores or targeted at pest control specialists are examples of trade names.
