Depending on the nature and severity of the issue, powdery mildew can be challenging to treat once it manifests. Therefore, prevention is crucial. It is usually sufficient to stay away from susceptible cultivars, place plants in full sun, provide good air circulation, and maintain plants properly (i.e., with water, fertilizer, etc.). Watering early in the day could also be beneficial.
Despite taking the best possible safeguards, powdery mildew is still a possibility. Fungicides can be helpful when used early on, but stronger infections may require the use of horticultural oil or neem oil. You can alternatively make your own solution by combining a gallon (4 L) of water with a tablespoon (15 ml) each of baking soda, horticultural oil (or canola), and liquid dish soap (without bleach). During the summer, mist your peonies every 10 to 14 days. Spraying the solution shouldn’t be done on hot, sunny days, and you should always test it on a tiny section of the plant before applying it to the entire thing.
Which fungicide works well on peonies?

Prevention is key because once your peonies are infected, there is no spray that can treat them. The issue can be greatly avoided by choosing resistant cultivars and properly situating them in full light with sufficient air circulation.
Disease prevention can be aided by good cleanliness. The conclusion of the growing season is always the greatest time to remove sick plant foliage from the garden. There are fungicides available to attempt and stop powdery mildew. Botrytis is a different, more harmful disease that occasionally infects peony and causes young stems to droop and die as well as buds to become black. On older leaves close to the damp soil surface, under the plant canopy, and on the flowers is where Botrytis typically establishes itself and develops spores. The growth of gray mold and its spores might be supported by dead tissue in the plant container, on the greenhouse bench, or on the floor.
Sometimes in the spring, Michigan growers are faced with the ideal conditions for a Botrytis epidemic. The storm’s characteristics include cloudy, chilly, damp weather, and flowering floriculture crops that are maturing.
Using a multifaceted strategy that includes both cultural and chemical management, gray mold can be prevented and controlled. By removing dead and diseased plants, leaves, and flowers from greenhouse production areas, sanitation minimizes the spore burden. Enhancing air flow is crucial for lowering relative humidity. Heating can be used to slightly raise the temperature, which will also reduce relative humidity. When feasible, water sparingly and during a time of day when the foliage can dry fast. Although these methods are useful, fungicides may be required to completely eradicate gray mold during Michigan’s springtime moist weather with cloudy sky.
Pick fungicides that work, use the recommended dosage, and apply frequently. Due to Michigan’s “Stay Home order,” it is quite possible that fungicides will be essential as growers attempt to hold their crops. The best way to handle botrytis is preventively, which includes utilizing fungicides before a harmful epidemic. Use only fungicides that have been demonstrated to be efficient in laboratory studies, and apply them as directed at intervals of seven days. In order to reduce the possibility of fungicide-resistant Botrytis strains emerging, it is crucial to switch between fungicide modes of action. There are strains of Botrtis that are resistant to a wide range of fungicide classes, and this pathogen has a history of adapting to fungicide use. Daconil, a multi-site fungicide, is efficient with a low likelihood of pathogen resistance, but for maximum results, it must be applied preventively, before disease begins. Based on the modes of action of the active components, the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC) has allocated alphanumeric numbers to fungicides. Biorational controls, such as Affirm WDG (FRAC code 19), which has shown effective against gray mold, can also play a part in controlling Botrytis.
Botrytis in greenhouse ornamental crops can be controlled with fungicides, which we have found to be effective. We often include a large number of products that are offered for sale in our studies. The “A and “B Team table shows the product name, FRAC code, and active component along with the results of several years of testing fungicide products. The A Team’s products are very potent at combating Botrytis. Though it can also prevent illness, the B Team fungicide (Chipco 26019) probably won’t be as efficient as the A Team goods. To prevent the Botrytis pathogen from developing fungicide resistance, always switch between fungicide formulations with active components that have several modes of action (FRAC codes).
