How To Force Daffodil Bulbs In Water

  • Pick an empty container that is 4 to 6 inches deep and half-filled with pebbles.
  • Place the bulbs on top of the pebbles so that the tops are parallel to the pot’s rim. To keep them in place, add more stones, leaving the top two-thirds of the bulbs visible.
  • Water should be added to the container, keeping it just below the pebbles’ tops. The bulbs may perish if they come in contact with water.
  • The container should be kept in a cool, dry area that doesn’t freeze. Fill up the water as necessary.
  • In a few weeks, give the bulbs a gentle push to check for resistance, which indicates that roots are growing. Transfer the bulbs to a warm, sunny location whenever they are ready. In about a week, leaves should start to appear, and then, in 3 to 5 weeks, blooms.
  • Move your opened daffodils to a location with indirect light to let them stay longer. After the blossoms have faded, keep the bulbs moist and compost the bulbs. In most cases, daffodils driven into water won’t blossom again.

How much time does it take to push bulbs through water?

First off, the term “forcing” is inaccurate because it conjures up images of labor. We’re merely deceiving the bulbs into believing that winter is ended much earlier than it actually is. At a time of year when spirits desperately need renewing, forcing is a simple trick that gives the uplifting fragrances and hues of spring. But in order to get the benefits when the snow starts to fall, you must plant now, in the autumn. Although we frequently think of forcing Daffodils, Hyacinths, and Tulips, many of the smaller bulbs, such as Crocus, Muscari (Grape Hyacinth), Scilla, Dwarf Irises, and Anemones, are also incredibly simple and rewarding to force.

There are two categories of forced bulbs: those that need freezing and those that don’t. When bulbs do need cooling, they actually only need a much shorter period of time than a typical northern winter. (For specifics, see the list at the bottom of this entry.)

The bulbs should be planted in any well-draining potting soil, given water, and left for the shortest amount of time (see below) in a cool, but not freezing, dark location. After that, they should be brought indoors where it is warm and well-lit. The bulbs immediately sprout and flower because they believe spring has arrived. That simple—the bulbs handle the bulk of the labor.

If you want to involve your children or grandchildren, this is a terrific project to do with them. The actual planting process can be a little messy, so it’s a good idea to spread some newspapers to catch any dirt that may leak, collect all of your pots in one location, and complete the planting in one go.

If you want to force bulbs, you can use any pot as long as it has three to four inches of space below the bulbs for root growth. Show off your favorite terra cotta pots, flea market purchases, and tag sale finds at this event. You will need to water your bulbs carefully if you choose a pot without a drainage hole in the bottom since bulbs that sit in moist potting mix will quickly decay. If you’re pushing tall Tulips or Daffodils, think about using a ceramic or terra cotta pot. When fully bloomed, these blooms can be top-heavy and may tumble if grown in light plastic pots.

We advise using a soilless potting mix to plant bulbs (available at garden centers and hardware stores). A soilless mixture retains moisture while easily allowing extra water to flow away.

Put potting mix in a plastic bucket or tub before starting to pot the bulbs. Once the mixture is moist but not soggy, gradually add water while stirring. If you want to include a child or grandchild in the excitement, this is the perfect task for a very young assistant. Fill the pot approximately three-quarters full with the moistened mixture. If you can’t determine which end is up, like with Anemone blanda, place the bulbs on their sides rather than root-side down on top of the mixture. The bulbs should be placed considerably closer together than you would in a garden; they practically need to touch. Finally, add more mix. Larger bulbs should be covered up to their necks, leaving the tops of the bulbs exposed. Cover little bulbs entirely with a 1/2 layer of mix. After potting, properly water.

Cold-hardy bulbs must first be stimulated to form new roots by being kept cool and moist for a duration that varies depending on the type of bulb in order to force them into bloom (see listing below). Most bulbs flower best when stored at 40-60F for the first 3–4 weeks after potting, then at 32–40F for the remainder of the cooling period. This transition replicates the fall to winter season’s decrease in soil temperature outdoors.

Placing bulbs outside and letting nature take its course is the simplest approach to get them to cool. Bury the pots in a layer of dry leaves kept in place by a plastic tarp or in a pile of mulch, such as bark or wood chips, and cover the pile to avoid the development of a frozen crust to protect the bulbs from sudden changes in air temperature and from freezing cold. If you’re fortunate enough to have one, you can also chill bulbs in a chilly cellar, an unheated garage, or a cold frame. Just make sure the temperature doesn’t drop below freezing.

Make sure there is no fresh fruit present in the refrigerator before chilling bulbs. Fruit naturally releases ethylene gas as part of the ripening process, and this gas will obstruct the growth of flowers. It could be challenging to set up for the appropriate temperature shift indicated above in places other than a refrigerator. Fortunately, most bulbs haven’t read the instructions, so if the temperature doesn’t fluctuate too much above or below 40F when the bulbs are rooting, they will root wonderfully. Professional growers accurately control the temperatures while filling enormous walk-in coolers with planted bulbs. You may achieve fantastic results using an old refrigerator in a basement without ever touching the temperature settings.

The potential drawback of outdoor storage has four tiny legs. All of your bulbs will be consumed if mice or other rodents have access to them, with the exception of those that are poisonous or repulsive to them (such as Narcissus, more commonly known as Daffodils). Use steel mesh, such as hardware cloth, to shield potted bulbs.

Please be aware that for bulbs to successfully freeze, moisture is just as crucial as temperature. Every few weeks, check the potting mix in the pots, and when the surface seems dry to the touch, properly water it.

Check the pots for evidence that the bulbs have rooted as soon as the suggested rooting period has passed. The bulbs are often ready to bloom when thick white roots can be seen peeking through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pots. Give the bulbs extra time in the cold storage if you can’t see any roots. The appearance of shoots emerging from the tops of the bulbs should not be used to determine preparedness; without roots, the bulbs won’t flower as intended.

You don’t have to immediately remove the bulbs from the cold once they have taken root. Most plants will endure additional freezing period, enabling you to plan a series of winter blooms.

Bring the pots out of cold storage once the bulbs have rooted, and place them in a bright window in a cool room (one where the temperature stays below 65F). The leaves and flower stems will remain compact in bright light; in dim light, they have a tendency to flop. The bulbs most likely generated white shoots while being stored in the cold. They immediately turn green in the sunlight.

As the bulbs begin to send up leaves and blossom stems, pay special attention to how much moisture they need. The bulbs won’t likely need watering more regularly than once per week at first, if at all, but by the time they bloom, you might need to water them every other day or two.

The majority of bulbs will blossom 2–5 weeks after emerging from the cold, bringing with them the pleasant scents and vibrant hues of spring. The length of bloom varies depending on the variety and bulb type, but it is typically less than you’d anticipate with garden-planted bulbs. The demise of the blooms is accelerated indoors by warm temperatures and low humidity. To extend bloom, move the pots out of direct sunshine and into a cool space at night.

We often advise placing the bulbs on the compost pile after the blossoms have faded. After the risk of a heavy frost has gone, forced bulbs can be planted in the garden if you keep them in a sunny window and keep watering them, but they won’t bloom properly again for at least two years. Daffodils, Crocus, and Grape Hyacinth are more likely to be worth the effort of planting than Tulips, which rarely bloom again.

Hyacinths can be forced in glass jars, water with pebbles, or both. If forced in this manner, they still require a cool rooting period. Only the bulb’s roots reach the water in special forcing glasses that have been in use since Victorian times and are designed like an hourglass to keep the bulb’s bottom dry. If you’re putting pebbles in a different kind of container, fill the bottom of the bowl or pot with a layer or two of pebbles, such as pea stones, marble chips, or river rocks. The top third of the bulbs should be exposed when the bulbs are placed on top of the pebbles and then filled with more stones. Make sure to keep the bases of the bulbs above the water line while adding enough water to serve as a reservoir for the roots. The bulbs will perish if they are left in water. Then, after 4–8 weeks, keep the container in a dark, cool location (40–50F). Regularly check the water level and top it off as needed to keep it below the bottom of the bulb. It’s time to relocate the bulb into a bright window in a cool room once the roots have formed and the leaves have started to grow (one where the temperatures stay below 65F). After the risk of a heavy frost has gone, bulbs that have been forced in water can be planted in the garden, but they won’t bloom well for at least two years, if not ever.

Although experts frequently advise extremely long cold spells, we’ve had success at home utilizing the minimums given here. Keep in mind that bulbs can continue to cold for longer than the required time. Please be aware that tulips do need the longest amount of time to successfully flower.

Can daffodil bulbs be forced?

You will want premium bulbs, a well-drained commercial potting mix, and appropriate containers to effectively force daffodils indoors. Forcing containers can be made of metal, clay, ceramic, or plastic. As long as it has drainage holes on the bottom, practically any container can be used.

Potting

Planting soil should first partially fill the container. The daffodil bulbs should next be planted on the soil’s surface. When the tips of the bulbs are even or just below the container rim, the soil level should be adjusted. Depending on the size of the bulb and container, determine how many bulbs to plant in each pot. An ideal number of bulbs for a 6-inch-diameter pot is three to five. However, a 6-inch pot may often hold 5 to 7 small kinds of bulbs. Add more potting soil to the area around the bulbs after they are in the right place. Don’t entirely enclose the bulbs though. The bulb tops (noses) should poke out from the potting soil. The level of the soil mixture should be 1/2 to 1 inch below the rim of the container to make watering easier. As each pot is planted, label it. Specify the variety name and the planting date. Each container should be well watered after potting.

Chilling

Daffodils and other spring-blooming bulbs require 12 to 16 weeks of exposure to temperatures between 40 and 45F in order to bloom. The refrigerator, the root cellar, or an open trench are all potential storage locations. The bulbs should be kept in complete darkness and periodically watered while being kept in cold storage.

Removal from the Cold

Once the required level of cold has been reached, start removing the potted daffodil bulbs from cold storage. Yellow shoots from the bulbs should have started to appear at this point. Put the daffodils in a spot with low to moderate light and a cool (50 to 60F) temperature. Leave them here for 4 or 5 days, or until the sprouts become green. Then transfer the daffodils to a warm (60 to 70 F) area that is well-lit. Water the plants frequently. Regular container turning will encourage straight, upright growth. Three to four weeks after the bulbs have been taken out of cold storage, flowering should typically start. Every two weeks, remove pots from cold storage for a succession of indoor blooms.

Daffodils can they live only on water?

It’s not surprising that there are many variances among the numerous flowers in the Begonia plant family given that the genus Begonia is made up of over 1800 different plant species. There are numerous types of begonias. The colors of the blooms and leaves of begonias, as well as their sizes, are all very variable.

Begonia plants come in a variety of plant varieties and sizes. Some of these are Wax Begonias, which are hardy annuals that like shade and acquired their name from the distinctive waxy shine on their leaf. Wax Begonias are low-growing, compact bedding flowers that don’t exceed one foot in height. Containers and hanging baskets are also favorites. One of the few species that prefers to form roots in water is the wax begonia. Begonias really have a better chance of surviving when they are placed in water jars or vases as opposed to when they are planted on dirt.

There are also larger-sized Tuberous Begonia cultivars that thrive in water and produce vibrant, eye-catching flowers. Popular as a houseplant, the cane begonia can also thrive outside in tropical climates. Canes dislike being cultivated in water, and because of this and the fact that their flowers are small, they are sometimes disregarded in favor of the plant’s exotic-looking leaves. There are larger Cane Begonia plants that can grow up to five feet tall when cultivated outdoors, as well as smaller, ground cover Cane Begonia plants that only reach a height of one foot. The growing conditions offered to cane begonias cause their sizes to differ as well.

There are more species of rhizomatous begonias than any other variety of begonia flowering plant. The majority of rhizomatous begonias are grown as houseplants and ornamental foliage plants; they all have lovely foliage but few of them bloom. They might be as small as four or five inches or as large as three feet tall and wide.

Last but not least, there are Rex Begonias, which also grow on rhizomes like Rhizomatous Begonias and typically root well in water like Wax Begonia and Tuberous Begonia. Rhizomes are where Rex Begonias, like Rhizomatous Begonias, get their growth. Growing conditions for Rex Begonias are best in some shade.

Therefore, while Rhizomatous Begonias and Cane Begonias do best when put into soil rather than water, Wax, Rex, and Tuberous Begonias often grow well from stem cuttings placed in water. Our article How to Grow Begonia Flowers has further information.

Crocus (Crocus)

Crocus in water require precise timing, so it’s important to start with the best-looking bulbs you can find. Search for solid, plump-appearing bulbs that lack lesions and soft spots. You need as many bulbs as it takes to completely fill the vase’s mouth. You should choose a vase with a narrow neck for crocuses. Your crocus bulbs should be placed in a brown paper bag along with some moistened sphagnum moss. The warmest area of your refrigerator should be used to chill the crocus bulbs for 10 to 15 weeks at a temperature of about 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Remove the bumps from the paper bag and make their vase after 15 weeks have passed. Fill small decorative stones to within a couple of inches in a low glass vase with a tight neck. You can choose between using glass or natural pebbles. After that, add water until it just touches the pebbles. Place the bulbs in the vase so that their pointed tops are facing up and their flat bottoms are just touching the liquid. Daffodils (Narcissus)

Daffodils may be grown indoors in water-filled containers, and they will even blossom when done so. You will initially need a container that is four to six inches deep without any drainage holes. Fill this container halfway with small stones or rocks. Then, set your daffodil bulb above these pebbles so that the tips of the bulb are parallel to the container’s top lip. Make sure to leave the top two thirds of the bulb free from stones and exposed to the air and sunlight while adding additional pebbles to the pot’s rims to keep the bulb firmly in place.

Warm tap water should be poured into the container until it reaches the point where the pebbles end. The daffodil bulb shouldn’t come in contact with water, though, as this could cause decay. Your daffodil bulb should be kept in a cool, dark environment that doesn’t become too cold. Check on it every day or so and add more water as necessary, being careful not to fill the container over the pebbles’ line or let the water touch the light bulb.

Pulling lightly on the bulb to feel for root resistance after a few weeks can allow you to determine whether roots have formed. The bulbs should be relocated to a warmer location with sunlight once roots have formed. In approximately a week, the daffodil’s leaves will start to sprout if you leave it in this warm location. You should also see the daffodil starting to develop blossoms in three to five weeks.

When your daffodil starts to bloom, you can help the blooms last longer by relocating the plant to an area with indirect light that still receives some sunlight. To prevent the bulb from decaying, you should always only fill the container with water until the pebbles are submerged throughout this process. Geraniums (Pelargonium)

Due to their widespread use as indoor plants and in outdoor flower gardens, geraniums may already be known to you. However, you might not be aware that geraniums can also be grown in a water-filled container.

Start with a six-inch-long clipping taken from a healthy geranium plant. With the exception of the leaves at the cutting’s top, remove all the leaves. The clipping should then be placed in a container with lukewarm tap water and a bright area where it can develop.

However, take care not to set up your cutting in the sun’s direct rays as this could cause heat damage or sunscald. Verify that none of the geranium’s remaining leaves are submerged in the water, as leaves in the water can rot and mildew. Learn more in our article on geranium cultivation.

Hyacinth (Hyacinthus)

Before planting, store your hyacinth bulbs in the refrigerator for eight to ten weeks. Put your bulbs in water as soon as possible after the chilling phase. Plant fresh bulbs every few weeks in the fall if you want to enjoy your hyacinths all winter long.

Placing the hyacinth bulbs in the neck of a clear or colored glass bulb vase with just the root side touching the water after filling it with pebbles. After that, put your vase somewhere cold and dark, such a garage or outside barn. A mass of roots and a green sprout should start to appear after six weeks.

Move the vase into a bright, warm spot once the shoot reaches a height of two to three inches, and then watch in awe as it blossoms. For the stems of your hyacinths to remain straight, rotate the vase slowly, gradually, and frequently. Impatiens (Impatiens)

Because they are so simple to maintain and give a ton of lovely color, impatiens, also known as Busy Lizzie, are a staple of many outdoor gardens. They also thrive when grown indoors in a water container to spruce up your house.

Start by obtaining a stem cutting from a healthy impatiens plant, being sure to include the node where the leaves meet the stem. Remove most of the leaves from this cutting at the bottom, leaving a few leaves at the top. The stem cutting should then be placed in a container with a layer of lukewarm tap water, about 1 inch thick. Don’t allow the water to rise up the cutting to the point when the leaves become submerged.

Impatiens prefer to grow in partial sunshine or shade. You must locate a spot in your home for your impatiens cutting that will receive at least some partial sunlight but not direct sunlight, which can harm the plant through heat stress or sunscald. Give your impatiens plant a new drink of tap water every two days. You will start to see roots emerge in a few weeks.
