Although vinegar has a place in the home, does the garden need it as well? In order to alter the colour of the blooms on bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla), some gardeners have begun using vinegar to lower the pH of their soil. Does this really function? The simple answer is, sort of; theoretically, it could. But is it the most effective long-term remedy for changing the pH of your soil? Here’s why we don’t believe it!
A Quick Chemistry Lesson
Did you know that the bloom colour of hydrangeas isn’t directly influenced by the pH of the soil? It becomes a little trickier than that! In reality, bloom pigments are reliant on the presence of aluminium ions (Al+) in the soil. Aluminum ions react with hydroxide ions (OH-) in basic soils (pH > 7.5) to generate Al(OH)3, which is stationary in the soil and unavailable to plants. However, these aluminium ions are no longer bound by hydroxide and are free to mix with other ions when the soil becomes more acidic (pH lower than 6.5). Other ions, particularly those that plants absorb, will react with it. Aluminum is now “mobile” and available for plant uptake as a result. Hydrangea blossoms turn blue as they absorb more aluminium ions. Bigleaf hydrangeas can produce pink or blue flowers depending on whether the soil is acidic or basic.
While increasing the mobility of aluminium in your soil will alter the colour of your blooms, it can also be harmful to your plants. A poisonous soil can have a pH that is too low. The plant may even perish if there is too much aluminium in the soil. To make sure you are not reducing the pH too much, make sure you test your soil frequently.
What does this have to do with vinegar?
Acetic acid, which makes up 5% of vinegar, is an acidic mixture of water. Since home vinegar has a pH of about 2.4, it is neutral at a pH of 7. (which is quite acidic). According to the hypothesis, adding weak vinegar to the soil will cause the pH to decrease sufficiently to alter the colour of your hydrangea blossoms. The soil will become more acidic thanks to this tactic, but only temporarily.
Do we consider this to be a viable option? Not really, no. If it rains or is watered, the vinegar will quickly dissolve in the soil and have little effect on pH. Additionally, hydrangeas require a pH adjustment that is sustained over a lengthy period of time in order to change colour. It might require more time than a single growing season! To keep the pH stable, you would need to add vinegar to the soil each time you water.
The greatest option for your plant or the surrounding wildlife may not be this one. You may have heard that vinegar can be used to destroy weeds. Any leafy green tissue that vinegar is sprayed on will be destroyed because the acetic acid in vinegar can quickly burn through the wax layer on leaves. When sprayed directly to the soil, the vinegar doesn’t hurt the roots. Pests like fungus gnats will be attracted to the vinegar’s pungent fragrance, while wildlife will be deterred from making your garden their home. Even worms and other significant soil creatures that are advantageous to your garden can be discouraged by it!
What are the alternatives?
Personally, we don’t advocate changing the pH of your soil because we believe hydrangea blossoms are lovely in every colour. In the garden, a pH change can have a variety of effects, including making the soil unsuitable for neighbouring plants. If you’re set on changing your bloom colour, we advise using ground lime to raise pH levels or garden sulphur or ammonium sulphate to drop pH levels. Consider planting your shrub in a sizable pot because doing so is simplest in a container.
What much of vinegar should I use on hydrangeas?
Use apple cider vinegar diluted with water (20 parts water to 1 part vinegar). Water the plants at the base of them. The vinegar-and-water mixture might burn the leaves, so try to avoid getting it on them.
Can hydrangeas be harmed by vinegar?
Some common plants, like rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and gardenias, thrive on acidity, making a little vinegar the greatest pick-me-up. However, vinegar can be lethal to many common plants. The next time you water these plants, mix one cup of unflavored white vinegar with a gallon of water to get fantastic results. For plants that don’t like acidity as much, you may also add some distilled vinegar to your soil to combat lime or hard water.
Should hydrangeas receive daily watering?
Hydrangeas do need a lot of water to maintain their status as the garden’s most beautiful plants. Instead of providing Hydrangeas with small amounts of water each day, give them a long bath one to three times per week.
Overwatering or dry conditions are not good for hydrangeas. It is difficult to tell by looking at their leaves whether they need additional water or not in the daytime sun. Near the base of the hydrangea, insert your pointer finger four inches into the ground to feel the earth. It’s time to water if the soil is dry.
Hydrangeas’ development can be stunted by either overwatering or underwatering, but the good news is that if you fix the issue before it does too much damage, Hydrangeas can typically recover. Your Hydrangeas will look absolutely stunning if you water them correctly and address issues as soon as they arise.
White vinegar: Does it harm plants?
Because vinegar is non-selective, it will harm all plants and grass, not just the weeds you’re attempting to get rid of. Make sure no other plants are hit when you spray the vinegar on the weeds. If it’s not practicable, use a brush to apply vinegar onto the weeds. Make certain all of the foliage comes into touch with the vinegar. The leaves will be burned and dried up by the vinegar’s acetic acid.
You should anticipate the region to smell like a salad dressing explosion in your yard for a few days after using the vinegar for weeds. On the bright side, that potent aroma may temporarily discourage deer, rabbits, and other troublesome animals from visiting your garden. Don’t spray for at least two weeks before doing so again.

Many customers ask why their hydrangeas aren’t blooming. The primary reasons hydrangeas don’t bloom are incorrect pruning, bud damage due to winter and/or early spring weather, location and too much fertilizer.
There are hydrangea kinds that bloom on either fresh or old wood, or even both. Both new and old wood are the growth of the following year (spring), respectively.
- Consider that this year, you bought a Nikko Blue Hydrangea. For the next year, Nikko’s produce blooms in the fall. Your Nikko is therefore creating blooms this fall that will blossom in the spring.
- Therefore, you wouldn’t want to completely prune your Nikko Blue Hydrangea this fall while you are pruning your perennials. Pruning the Nikko Blue Hydrangea this fall would effectively mean cutting off your hydrangea flowers for the upcoming spring.
- The idea behind Endless Summer, a hydrangea variety that blooms on both old and new wood, is that the plant will set blooms this fall to blossom not only in the spring of the following year, but will also keep producing blooms in the spring of the following year to extend the blossoms into the summer.
- Once more, pruning your Endless Summer hydrangea in the fall would mean removing some of the flowers that would blossom in the spring.
The hydrangea’s plant tag will indicate whether it blooms on fresh wood, old wood, or both. It is typically preferable to wait until spring to prune your hydrangeas. As the plant grows, you’ll see stems that are fragile when bent and lack any leaves. Since these stems are dead and won’t produce any flowers, they should be clipped close to the plant’s base.
The second reason why your hydrangeas aren’t blooming is probably the weather. Buds of hydrangeas are extremely susceptible to cold. Therefore, it is a good idea to wrap your hydrangea for the winter if it is an old wood hydrangea. Keep in mind that old wood hydrangeas establish their blooms for the following spring in the fall. Therefore, you won’t have blossoms in the spring if the fall-produced buds are frozen in the winter.
You can wrap anything with regular burlap. Burlap should be wrapped around the plant and filled with mulch or leaves after the first hard frost and after the hydrangea’s leaves have dropped. In order for the buds to survive the winter and sprout the following spring, the plant receives insulation from this. Never wrap your hydrangeas in plastic. When warmer winter days arrive, the plant cannot breathe since plastic, unlike burlap, doesn’t breathe. As a result, the plant can heated to such high temperatures that it cooks within the plastic and perishes.
The second most frequent weather-related cause hydrangeas do not blossom is late spring killing frosts. We saw really chilly temperatures in April both this year and last year after beautiful spring days. When springtime temperatures drop below freezing, hydrangeas need to be covered with an old beach towel or sheet. Because of the temperature dip, there won’t be any blossoms.
The majority of hydrangeas require at least 3 to 4 hours of light per day to bloom. The best light is in the early morning, midday light is acceptable if it is dabbled light rather than beating sun, and afternoon sun is typically too hot. Check the plant label, though. Newer hydrangea cultivars are being created that can withstand more sun exposure time and sun intensity. A hydrangea in full sun will require much more watering than one in diffused light, so keep that in mind.
High nitrogen fertiliser should not be used to feed hydrangeas. Nitrogen is indicated by the first number on the fertiliser ratio. (The ratio stands for N, P, and K) For healthy leaves and general good growth, some nitrogen (N) is required; however, a ratio of 8-16-6 or any similar combination with a higher middle or phosphorus (P) value is preferred. The growth of roots and shoots is encouraged by phosphorus, which improves the blooming process.
Potash (K), the third element’s last quantity and the lowest ratio, is for plant hardiness. Because hydrangeas prefer acidic soil, they can be fertilised with fertilisers designed for such plants. Hydrangeas only require fertilising twice a year, once in early spring and once in mid-summer. To avoid root burn, make sure the soil is always moist before applying a fertiliser.
