Known as the American Tulip Tree or Tulip Poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera is a native of eastern North America. It can be found from southern Ontario to central Florida and Louisiana. When found in the Appalachian Mountain forests, it can reach heights of more than 50 m. This tree frequently grows up to 25 to 30 meters without adding any new limbs, making it a very desirable wood tree. Although it is a fast-growing tree, it lacks the traits that make other members of that species vulnerable to extinction. It doesn’t have weak wood or a short lifespan like those fast-growing species are known for. The majority of the southern United States’ flowering season starts in April. In June, the trees in the northern part start to bloom. With the exception of white, the flowers are light green or yellow with an orange band on the tepals. Large amounts of nectar have been recorded to be produced by these flowers. The state tree of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana is the American Tulip Tree.
Most American tulip trees are not tolerant of extended submersion in water, especially the younger ones.
In the Southeast of the United States, an ecotype that is comparatively flood-tolerant has been noted. The blunt-lobed, perhaps reddish, leaves of this ecotype are distinctive. Botanists have discovered an ecotype in parts of east-central Florida close to Orlando that has leaves that resemble the common plants but blooms significantly earlier. This ecotype appears to be best able to withstand extremely wet conditions. Similar to other swamp trees in warm areas, it produces short, pencil-like root systems. Unless they are hit by a harsh frost, certain American Tulip Trees have been known to keep their leaves all year.
Uses
In the eastern US, this species is a significant source of honey plants. It yields a somewhat potent, dark reddish honey. The soft, fine-grained wood of tulip trees is sold internationally as “American Tulipwood” but is incorrectly referred to as “poplar” in the United States. When an inexpensive, manageable, and stable wood is required, it is often employed.
The sapwood typically has an off-white, creamy hue. Generally, the heartwood is a light green color, but depending on the environment the tree was grown in, it may develop streaks of crimson, purple, or even black.
Due to its propensity to accept a fine, smooth, precisely-cut finish and properly seal against pipes and valves, it is the wood of choice for use in organs. It is frequently employed for clapboard siding as well. White pine wood can be used as a comparison for the American Tulip Tree’s wood in terms of texture, hardness, and softness. Other use for this wood include siding, carriage panels, coffin boxes, pattern timber, and wooden goods.
Do I need to remove my tulip poplar tree?
These trees should be pruned in the early spring, before the sap begins to flow, or in the fall, after the leaves have fallen (March). After the leaves have grown to their full size in the summer, a few minor branches may need to be cut off. When a tree is young, you have the best chance of having a long-lasting impact on its shape and structure. Remove any branches that are crossing or congested. If desired, low branches should also be cut off while the tree is still young. The simplest way to accomplish this is to prune one or two branches per year over a few years, until the required clearance is attained. Pruning the tree every three to five years will maintain it healthy as it ages. As the tree grows, expert assistance could be needed. Trees that have just been planted respond strongly to fertilizer. You can use fertilizers that are granular, liquid, or in the form of stakes. 2 lbs. or 2 quarts of granular fertilizer can be incorporated into the soil around the plant for every 100 square feet of planting space. The first step in an alternative method of applying granular fertilizers is to punch or drill six deep holes near the tree’s drip line. 2 pounds of fertilizer should be added to each hole, divided by the diameter of the trunk (divided up and poured evenly between all of the holes). Once the top third of the fertilizer has been inserted into these holes, they should be top-filled with dirt. Only once a year should this type of fertilization be used, and the optimal times to do so are in the late fall after leaf fall or the early spring before the buds emerge. The fertilizer 10-10-10 for all purposes works effectively.
Liquid fertilizers (like Miracle Gro) are applied by mixing them with water in the same way that you would water a plant (see product for specific details). Three or four times a year, beginning in late April and finishing in mid-July, this should be done. You can use stake-type fertilizers by following the instructions on the packaging. A higher nitrogen mix, such as 20-20-20 or a similar combination, should be utilized with any of the aforementioned procedures. Manure is an organic fertilizer that can be utilized successfully. One bushel of the material should be incorporated into the open soil for every one trunk caliper or 100 square feet of bed space. Less fertilization or lower nitrogen mixtures should be used as a tree ages.
Young trees must be shielded from the winter sun. For the first two or three years, the trunks should be covered with tree wrap of a commercial grade. You can take off this wrap in the summer and put it back on in the fall.
Tulip wood cost how much?
Despite the rarity of serious reactions, rosewood from the Dalbergia genus, including Tulipwood, has been documented to cause allergies and toxicity. Pricing and Availability: Unlikely to be inexpensive and infrequently offered as boards. Most frequently used as smaller turning stock, tulipwood costs about the same as other rare exotics from the Dalbergia genus.
Sustainability: Brazilian Tulipwood is listed on CITES Appendix II under the genus-wide limitation on all Dalbergia species, which also covers completed goods made of the wood, although not being assessed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The process of determining a value for huge trees is more difficult. Fortunately, a method for calculating the worth of huge, individual trees has been established. Each tree species may be given a number ranging from 1% to 100%, however for the sake of simplicity, values are typically assigned to one of five percentage classes (100, 80, 60, 40, 20). The class values must be stated as decimal numbers in the formula, i.e. 80 =.80.
The condition class of a tree is determined by the observable state of the tree and takes into consideration things like wounds, decay, storm damage, harm from insects or diseases, and poor form. There are three paulownia trees at Whitman College. One was planted in Rooks Park by an adventurous individual. The only two Paulownia trees we’ve discovered in Walla Walla (although there are tales of a third) stood erect in front of a vacant lot. The owner, or would-be developer, then built a walkway, removed the trees, and left the tree stumps in their original locations.
This strange removal took place about a year ago (in spring 2020). A silent testament to careless growth is the sidewalk, the stumps, and the vacant lot.

According to the American Forestry Association’s 1992 publication “Growing Greener Cities,” trees have considerable financial advantages. They discovered that a single tree offers the equivalent of $73 in air conditioning, $75 in erosion management, $75 in wildlife shelter, and $50 in reduced air pollution.
