Is echinacea farming profitable?

Echinacea purpurea cultivation is profitable to the tune of 210 percent. At the same time, a hectare of land can yield a net profit of more than 170,000 UAH ($ 6.1 thousand) from cultivation investments at the rate of 85,000 UAH/ha ($ 3.05 thousand).

During the online webinar “Industrial and Home Growing of Herbal and Root Groups of Medicinal Plants,” which took place on September 9, Olexander Gubanev, a technologist-consultant for the cultivation of medicinal plants for the business Shlesem-Ukraine, presented this viewpoint. The Ukrainian Horticultural Business Development Project was in charge of planning the event (UHBDP).

Olexander Gubanev touched on the operational details of cultivating this crop throughout the webinar. Echinacea purpurea is easier to grow than valerian, according to a specialist in the market for medicinal herbs. This is because the culture was originally imported from North America, where it was raised under difficult circumstances. According to Olexander Gubanev, “This forced echinacea to adapt to growing in difficult settings.

The correct soil preparation in the fall is one of the key considerations in the cultivation of echinacea. At least 20 centimeters of the soil should be leveled or farmed. Because plants perish from a lack of moisture, farms that grow medicinal plants frequently experience losses as a result of drought. A crucial agricultural practice is also becoming looser to a depth of at least 30 to 35 cm at the same time. This event’s main goal is to obliterate as much dirt as possible. In actuality, farmers must plow to a depth of 20 to 25 cm before leaving a 3-5 cm thick layer of dirt in its wake. It is extremely dense and creates a moisture rupture in the top soil layer. I can guarantee that you will notice the benefits of this agricultural activity in the first year after deep loosening at least once every three years, especially in the southern regions of Ukraine, said the technologist-consultant for the cultivation of medicinal plants for the Shlesem-Ukraine company.

Olexander Gubanev further underlined that the second year of the growing season is often when the raw ingredients for echinacea are harvested. The plant only produces a maximum of 5-7 c/ha of roots in its first year. “However, the most important factor is that one-year-old echinacea roots are quite thin in structure and remain in a lot of soil during harvest. We are already harvesting two crops in the second year of the growing season. According to Olexander Gubanev, during the webinar, “the first of them is the grass in the phase of mass flowering, and in the autumn, we gather the root itself.”

The expert added that because echinacea is an immunomodulator for many ailments, the global coronavirus pandemic had caused a substantial rise in the demand for the herb today. “In light of this, the cost of echinacea has increased. The price of grass has increased from last year’s 20–25 UAH ($0.72-0.90) per kilogram to the current 40 UAH/kg ($1.44). According to Olexander Gubanev, a root currently costs about UAH 120 per kg ($4.31 USD). The expert added that from 1 hectare, it is possible to obtain 15 c/ha of dry roots and approximately 35 c/ha of dry grass with proper observance of all required precautions.

Olexander Gubanev specifically mentioned the echinacea variety “Princess,” which was formerly imported to Ukraine from Germany and is not now cross-pollinated with other types.

The yield of echinacea, on the other hand, depends not on the variety but rather on the agricultural practices used, such as fertilizers, sowing methods, and tillage. Olexander Gubanev stressed that these are the primary criteria for success in this industry.

Additionally, he mentioned that the majority of raw materials produced in Ukraine are currently marketed on international markets. Some of the raw ingredients are still being utilized in Ukraine to produce pharmaceuticals and food.

Currently, the market for the sale of medicinal herbs is diverse, according to Kateryna Zvereva, Director of the Development Department of the Ukrainian Horticultural Association (UHA).

“Both Asian and North American states as well as EU nations have a significant interest in medicinal plants. The EU is responsible for importing the majority of Ukraine’s exported medicinal and aromatic raw materials. The EU countries consume 400–420 thousand tons of raw materials annually. The director of UHA’s Development Department underlined that this market grows by roughly 5% annually.

Can echinacea harm the liver?

The more frequent echinacea adverse effects are as follows:

  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • feeling unwell
  • belly pain
  • constipation
  • skin repercussions (redness, itchiness and swelling)
  • Children are more likely to have them.

Echinacea use for longer than 8 weeks at a time may cause liver damage or immune system suppression. If you are taking medications known to have an adverse effect on your liver, herbalists advise against taking echinacea.

If you use any additional medications, herbs, or supplements, check with your doctor first.

Using echinacea safely

If you want to substitute echinacea for your cancer therapy, let your doctor know. Additionally, if you are considering taking it concurrently with your cancer therapy.

In some people, it may not be safe to use in conjunction with other cancer treatments.

Echinacea may impair the effectiveness of some chemotherapy medications, including etoposide.

Sometimes pharmacists and medical professionals advise lymphoma patients not to consume echinacea. This is so that it won’t affect how they’re being treated.

Researchers discovered that echinacea and etravine were safe to ingest together in HIV-positive individuals.

If any of the following apply to you before consuming echinacea:

  • are breastfeeding or pregnant
  • have a medical condition like autoimmune illness, HIV, or AIDS that impairs your immune system
  • are medicating to weaken your immune system because it might fight them
  • are under 12 years old
  • There is a possibility of allergic responses including skin rashes, according to the medical health regulatory association (MHRA).

Always discuss the use of complementary or alternative cancer therapy with your doctors and nurses. They could affect how well your other therapies work.

Your treatment team can point you in the direction of further resources if they don’t have the knowledge you need.

Echinacea and kidney health

If you have renal illness, stay away from herbal medications because they can increase blood pressure.

Some, like St. John’s Wort (for poor mood), may interfere with renal disease medications.

Before using some, such as the cold and flu treatment echinacea, consult with your doctor or pharmacist because they may have an adverse effect on kidney function.

Another issue is that the amount of the active ingredient in herbal remedies can vary significantly across brands (and even between batches of the same brand). This makes it challenging to anticipate how potent a dose will be.
