The genus’s members are distinguished by their lone, brightly colored flowers on tall stems. Honoring German master botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn is the name of the genus (172759). [5]

Do zinnias have several blossoms at once?

If you have multiple strong zinnia plants, you might be able to collect fresh cut flowers every five to six days. Early in the day or late at night are the ideal times for harvesting.

Right above a leaf node, cut the stem at an angle using a clean pair of pruners or scissors. You’ll lose future blooms if you cut the plant completely at the root. With each cut, you want to encourage the plant to divide into two new stems, each of which will bear additional blooms.

Sedges may have margins, but they do not have petals.

If you look closely enough, these flowers may appear to have just one petal, but they may actually have an opening that is slightly cut, like the five triangular teeth at the end of the bell of the cowberry, or they may have a curved “snout,” like the Common Broomrape, which has one lip at the opening. Although the plant may have just have one ‘petal,’ it may alternatively have a curving, somewhat twisted cowl, similar to that of Lords-and-Ladies, which is not at all a petal.

Some trumpet-shaped blooms, like those on daffodils and bindweeds, could seem to have just one petal. However, there is a crease between the petals of bindweeds, and they may also have 5 markings that match the 5 wrinkled petals. Daffodils, on the other hand, have 6 fused petals.

Due to having only two petals, the aquatic Cape Pondweed appears to be exceedingly unique. Flowers with just two petals oriented freely at 180 degrees are quite rare.

Numerous other plants in the mint family, including Red Dead nettle, have two-lipped flowers that are vertically symmetric. Numerous saprophytes also have two vertically symmetric lips, including Red Bartsia and orchids.

Many zygomorphic plants, including members of the Toadflaxes, Claries, and Mint families, can first appear to have only two petals; however, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that these petals really have five lobes, making a total of five petals.

Although not all three-petalled plants are aquatic, it appears that many of them are. Additionally, no non-aquatic plant has three petals. Flowering-rush, the Water-plantains, the Frogbit Family, the Waterweed Family, and of course Yellow Iris have three quite huge petals among the aquatic plants that have three petals.

The New Zealand Pigmyweed, which has an unusually low number of petals—four—despite being a member of the Stonecrop Family, which typically has five petals, and flowers of the Pondweed Family, which have no petals but four cupped green sepals that resemble petals, are notable exceptions (but some stonecrops have 6 or 7 petals petals).

There is more diversity in the number of petals for plants with more petals. For instance, certain examples of species that typically have 7 petals may actually have 6 or 8 petals. Broad-Leaved Ragwort and Yellow-wort both typically contain 7 flowers, however some varieties can have 6 or 8 petals.

Mountain Avens and Lesser Calendine are examples of flowers with eight petals on average, however they can range from seven to twelve. Typically, Canadian Goldenrod has 8 petals, although it can have up to 11 petals. Sneezewort’s petals range from 5 to 12, but the dedian only has 8.

Your zinnias will try to do whatever to prevent themselves from dying if they become water stressed, like converting bloom output from doubles to singles or cupcake shapes to singles. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, one might presume that when it’s hot outside, the genes for double flowering are turned off.
