Petunia is a genus of roughly 35 flowering plant species that are native to South America and members of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The common garden petunia (Petunia atkinsiana) is a decorative plant that is well-liked for summer window boxes and flower beds because of its eye-catching trumpet-shaped flowers.
The majority of petunia species are annual herbs. The leaves are usually oval in shape with smooth margins and sessile (i.e., lacking a petiole, or leaf stem); some include tiny, sticky hairs. Five united or partially fused petals and five green sepals make up the funnel-shaped flowers. Although P. exserta is pollinated by hummingbirds, the majority of species are pollinated by insects. In a dry capsule, the tiny seeds are carried. Some old Petunia species have been reclassified into the closely related genus Calibrachoa, which is notable for the decorative plant known as “million bells,” thanks to molecular data (C. hybrida).
A petunia is it a full flower?
Some plant species, such as the petunia, which is referred to as the “ideal flower,” have flowers that have both male and female components. Other plant species, however, have male and female flowers on separate plants. While certain ideal flowers, like petunias, do not self-pollinate, others do. These plants can avoid the negative effects of inbreeding, such as disease susceptibility, by refusing to self-pollinate. The petunia has a system in place that can distinguish between pollen produced by the plant and pollen from other petunias. The petunia accepts pollen from other petunias while destroying its own pollen. The stigma’s pistil portion creates a pollen tube that transports pollen to the flower’s ovary, where it is fertilized.
How many stamens are there in a petunia?
Two bracts are generated at the base of each flower, and each has a dormant (vegetative) meristem in its axil. Five sepals, five petals, five stamens, and two carpels are found in a wild type flower, which are grouped in four concentric whorls. The petals are united into five.
What kind of flowers are petunias?
Petunia plants come in four primary varieties: Grandiflora, Multiflora, Milliflora, and Spreading (Wave). All four can be found in series, which are collections of plants with similar sizes and flowering schedules. The spectrum of hues of various petunia blooms within each series is the sole characteristic that varies.
Varieties of Petunias
Grandiflora petunias, which were created in the 1950s, are the earliest varieties. Grandiflora petunia variants have bouquet-shaped plants with blooms up to 5 inches (12.5 cm) across. Even while the flowers are magnificent, by midsummer they start to look worn out and spindly. Grandiflora petunias thrive in mild summers with little to no excess moisture or humidity.

Petunias with many florets have smaller, more abundant blooms. Multiflora petunia cultivars are good for windy climates because of their sturdy stems. Particularly in wet weather, the blooms last a little while longer than Grandiflora petunia kinds. There are single and double kinds of multiflora petunias.

Petunia variants known as milliflora produce masses of 1- to 1-1/2-inch (2.5-4 cm) flowers on tiny plants. The plants are typically around 8 inches (20.5 cm) tall and wide when they are fully grown. Early blooming milliflora petunias are frequently grown in hanging baskets or containers. They are easy-to-care-for plants that don’t require deadheading.
A more modern kind, spreading, or wave petunias, have flowers that are normally around 2 inches (5 cm) across. The plants look fantastic in pots and make excellent ground covers, generally spreading 2 to 4 feet (0.5 to 1 m) by the end of the season. They normally don’t need deadheading and can handle heat and drought fairly well.
Are there male and female parts in petunias?
Petunias are flowering plants in the Solanaceae family that can withstand weather conditions in planting zones 10 and 11. These sun-loving plants produce blooms with stamens and pistils, or the male and female reproductive parts, but they won’t self-pollinate. - When pollinating a petunia flower, look for the stigma that protrudes from the center. Give it a light touch with your finger. The blooms are ready for pollination if they are shiny and sticky to the touch.
- To sanitize a pair of tweezers, dampen a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and rub it over the tools. Let the tweezers dry naturally.
- Your non-dominant hand should be used to grasp the parent petunia bloom. Take hold of the filament’s base inside the flower with the help of the tweezers. The slender stem known as the filament supports the pollen-filled anther in place. To detach the filament from the flower while keeping the anther and pollen in tact, pull upward.
- The yellow pollen will stick to the stigma of the recipient petunia flower if the anther is rubbed over it. This will allow you to pollinate as many flowers as you desire.
- Instead of removing the stamen, you can brush pollen from the parent flower onto the stigma of the recipient plant using a little paintbrush.
A hybrid of the two original plants should result from the combination of the genetic material (RNA) from the two flowers when the pollen from one is delivered to the stigma of the other bloom. Because plants share comparable genes, the hybrid may not appear to have undergone any visible alterations. Simply keep the seeds from your favorite blooms and plant them the following year if you only want plants with the same traits from year to year.

Even though it wasn’t planned, this discovery provided us with an exciting opportunity to learn more about pollination. While some plants, like peas, do a good job of self-pollinating, others, like petunias, are built in such a way as to guarantee cross-pollination. Encourage your kids to design an experiment to address their inquiries if they have lots of them and are keen to learn more about cross-pollination. For instance:

Consider utilizing Wisconsin Fast Plants for this experiment, which, when cultivated under continuous lighting, complete their full life cycle in less than a month. Fast Plants’ blooms feature lengthy pistils and small stamens, which makes self-pollination challenging, if not impossible. How do petunias appear?
One of the most common garden flowers for borders and pots is the petunia (Petunia spp.). They have broad, trumpet-shaped flowers and spreading foliage that is hairy and slightly sticky. They are prolific bloomers and can be found in anything but true blue. There is a wide range of characteristics found in the petunia genus, and the majority are sold as hybrids. These characteristics include single and double blooms, ruffled and smooth petals, striped, veined, and solid colors, mounding and cascade growth behaviors, and even some with smell.
Petunias grow quickly as plants. As seeds, they take about 12 weeks to germinate, grow to full size, and are ready to be planted outside after the last date of frost.
