One of the simplest flowering annuals to grow from seed is the sweet pea. In the garden, sweet peas are frequently direct-seeded. Give them a location with full to partial sun and rich, loamy soil that is deep, wet, and well-drained. To improve the soil and make it more friable, add lots of organic matter (compost, well-rotted manure, leaf mold, or humus).

Sweet peas have been successfully cultivated in Colorado’s hot summers by cut flower producers who mulch thickly as the plants mature and the temperature rises.

In the south, plant seeds in November or December for fresh cut flowers in early spring. In the non-coastal mid-west and northeast, start seeds indoors in February and transplant them outside after the ground thaws. In April, seeds can also be planted directly into prepared garden soil. The northeast’s coastline regions are also great places to raise sweet peas for the spring.

For sweet peas to bloom magnificently in your yard, you will need about 50 days of chilly temperatures (below 60 F). The seed coat of the sweet pea is tough and insoluble in water. There is no proof that sweet pea soaking will promote germination. A sweet pea seed’s outer layer can be punctured to allow for quick hydration, which speeds up and increases germination. The sweet pea seed coat can be easily nicked by scoring it with a nail cutter. When the soil is between 13 and 18 C or 55 to 65 F, sweet pea seeds will begin to sprout.

In holes that are about two inches (two knuckles) deep, plant seeds. Fill each hole with two to four seeds, and spacing them four to six inches apart. Till seeds have sprouted, thoroughly water and maintain soil moisture. Germination should occur within 10 to 21 days. Water the seedlings frequently once they start to grow to encourage robust, wholesome growth. Thin out the seedlings when they are three to four inches tall, spacing the strongest-looking plants four to six inches apart. You can enjoy your sweet peas for a longer period of time by sowing seeds once a week throughout a number of weeks.

Grow them in four-inch plastic or peat pots filled with a seed-starting mixture devoid of soil. Put two or three seeds into each container, each one being pushed an inch into the potting soil. Put the pots in a cool, dark location after covering with mix and water. Watch for new shoots to appear above the earth after about 10 days. Bring the plants outside into the sunlight at that stage. Keep them cool (below 55°F); if you keep them in a heated room, they won’t be hardy enough to move outside without a lot of time to harden off. Reduce the seedlings to one plant per pot until they have two sets of true leaves. As soon as the soil is workable, transplant into the garden about a month before the last date of frost because the shoots are hardy and won’t be affected by light frost. 12 inches should separate dwarf bushy forms, and 6 inches should separate climbing variety.

To avoid harming the roots, it is advisable to plant the stake or support with the seed or transplants when planting tall, long vine sweet peas. Although trellises are the most typical supports, there are various ways to climb. Sweet peas can climb on bird netting strung between two stakes, twine, string, or fishing line hung from the top of a split rail fence, a bamboo teepee, and brush stakes. If the support isn’t up against a wall, scatter seeds all around it to create a stunning display of blossoms that are visible from all angles. A four to six-inch layer of organic mulch will keep the roots cool and lengthen the growing season once the plants have been thinned out.

Avoid overfertilizing to avoid producing lots of very deep green foliage but few blooms. For the initial plant development, a 20-20-20 slow release fertilizer combination that is balanced works well. As an alternative, sweet peas benefit greatly from organic fertilizers. Composted manure mulching will help keep the soil moist and supply nutrients for healthy plant growth and blossoming.

When flowers start to fade, deadhead the plant if blooms are not frequently pruned. The plant will produce fewer flowers overall if seedpods are allowed to develop. More flowers will result from removing spent blooms.

Similar to other direct-sown seeds, the first difficulty for sweet peas is avoiding being devoured by rapacious birds, mice, squirrels, and other animals. Sweet pea seedlings are particularly susceptible to bird, slug, and snail damage if planted in the fall in a warm area.

Preventative actions frequently stop a problem in its tracks before it really has a chance to begin. For healthier plants, abide by these recommendations. Numerous varieties of dwarf sweet peas are offered in store-bought seed packets or through mail-order catalogs.

Sweet peas that climb are excellent container plants as well. Instead of placing one or two seeds in the center of the pot, place a circle of seeds an inch inside the rim of the pot, spaced a few inches apart. It is simplest to plant the support first, then scatter the seeds around it, in the constrained space of a container. Tomato cages make excellent supports for larger containers; the legs can be pressed into the potting soil. You can put a container of sweet peas in the garden in the early spring because sweet pea shoots aren’t affected by frost (at the same time youd plant seeds outside.)

Start trimming flowering stems for indoor bouquets when the first blooms show. You’re encouraging the plant to produce more flowers in addition to enhancing the lovely scent in the home. Every other day, during the morning hours when they are freshest, trim the stems. One of the simplest and most interesting crops to raise in your yard are peas. They are among the first spring crops to emerge, and the sturdy seedlings they produce can easily tolerate brief periods of cold weather. But what if you are unable to get them to sprout? I usually start 80 percent of my crops indoors, under grow lights, because I don’t like leaving germination in my small garden to chance, but I have tried directly sowing peas a few times. That’s when I first became aware of uneven germination and developing issues.

There are a number of reasons why peas might not germinate. Verify that the seeds in your batch aren’t 2 years or older old or expired. Peas that were seeded directly may not germinate in temperatures that are 38°F or higher. Pea seeds will perish in waterlogged soil. They might be eaten by mice and birds as well.

Peas shouldn’t require oversowing like many other smaller seeds since, as I previously indicated, they should be simple to germinate. But if you keep having issues with them, you’re obviously doing something incorrectly. Let’s examine the primary causes of latent pea seed occurrence.

  • Because they use a lot of food, sweet peas need a little more care to produce in large quantities. Apply bone meal, a thick layer of compost or well-rotted manure, and a generous amount of natural fertilizer to planting beds to prepare them. Incorporate these elements thoroughly into the soil.

It’s important to maintain their thirst quenched during warm weather. Use diluted fish and seaweed emulsion to feed plants once a week.
  • Pick flowers when there are at least two unopened blooms remaining on the stem for the greatest vase life. To extend the life of the vase, add flower food to the water. It’s crucial to prevent plants from going to seed in order to prolong blooming, so be sure to regularly harvest and deadhead the flowers.

Hot and dry weather conditions

Peas are a cool-season crop, so if the plant wilts and the foliage changes to brown and yellow hues, there has been excessive heat. Peas can be grown as an annual in all hardiness zones, however they perform best in harsh climates when planted in the spring and in moderate areas when planted in the fall and spring. The most fruitful pea plants grow in full light, but peas planted in hotter climates will benefit from some afternoon shade and partial shade.

Sugar snap peas are more heat and drought tolerant than their relatives, snow peas and English peas, making them a better choice for hotter areas. However, do your study and choose early cultivars that mature fast and are harvested before the scorching summer days start to set in. Snow peas and garden peas can also be produced in warm climates.

Soil pH and/or composition issues

Your soil’s pH and composition may need to be changed if your pea plants appear stunted. Peas like an acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Perform a soil test to determine the pH of your soil and make any required adjustments. Add lime if your pH is too low, but keep in mind that doing so will also raise the calcium content of your soil. Add sulfur if the soil pH is too high.

For peas to flourish, the soil must drain effectively. Add compost, pine chips, or coarse sand to the area around your pea plants if water collects there to promote drainage.

Soil has a nutrient surplus or deficiency

Oversupply or undersupply of certain nutrients, such as too much nitrogen or not enough phosphorus, is the main cause of pea plants’ failure to blossom. Actually, peas don’t need much fertilizer as all. Being a legume, peas collaborate with the bacterium Rhizobia to draw nitrogen from the soil. The symbiotic relationship is explained in the following manner by the University of West Virginia Extension Science:

[Rhizobia] bacteria reach the roots of the plant when they are present in the soil close to the seed or when they are affixed to the seed coat during planting. The bacteria absorb or fix atmospheric nitrogen gas, transform it into ammonia, and then provide the plant with the substance.

Pea plants do, in a sense, fertilize themselves, but they are powerless in the absence of Rhizobia bacteria. Purchase an inoculant powder if your pea plants are having problems metabolizing nitrogen. When pea plants receive excessive nitrogen, they focus more of their energy on developing their leaves and stems rather than their roots and blossoms.

Send your garden soil to your local university office for analysis if you are unsure of its nutrient composition. You can use a fertilizer with a tiny amount of nitrogen if your soil lacks nitrogen. Another beneficial nutrient for supporting the growth of robust root systems in plants is phosphorus. Use a 5-10-10 fertilizer since peas need phosphorus to blossom and produce fruit (5 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphorus, and 10 percent potassium). If you’re worried about over-fertilizing your soil with nitrogen, use bone meal or rock phosphate as an alternative.

Drought and water stress

Pea plants that have been dried out will have wilted, discolored leaves. Ironically, overwatered pea plants will exhibit the same symptoms, so check the soil for your sick pea plants’ diagnosis. Dig beneath the dirt and examine the roots if you suspect root rot. Brown, slimy roots are evidence of this fungus illness.

Established root rot cannot be remedied, but if it is discovered early enough, your watering practices can be changed to address the problem. To prevent a variety of problems and probable diseases caused by watering plants too late in the day, water as early in the day as you can. Once plants begin to flower, it’s a good idea to water peas an inch every week. To evaluate and keep track of your plants’ water requirements, use a rain gauge.

Mulch your pea rows with composted wood chips or straw if you expect hot, dry weather to keep moisture at the roots of the plants. Mulching is a simple strategy to keep plants cooler in the early summer heat while also suppressing weeds. Use a bamboo screen to provide shade for your pea plants during a heat wave.

You might want to consider planting peas where they will receive afternoon shade while designing your garden for the next year. Although peas do grow more quickly in full daylight, cultivating them in partial shade in warmer climates may help to extend their growing season.

Stress from disease or pests

Peas under pest or disease pressure will develop more slowly and show foliar damage. There is still a chance of pests and diseases, even in disease-resistant cultivars or inoculated pea seeds. While it is impossible to totally eliminate the risk for both in your garden, there are several practices you can adopt that can help your plants remain healthy for longer.

Plant your peas beside other vegetables and herbs that repel pests, such as basil and turnips, which keep thrips and aphids away. Release benevolent insects into your yard, such as ladybugs and lacewings. The most vulnerable pea seedlings are those that have just been transplanted; if pest problems are severe, consider covering plants with row cover.

Some illnesses, such as powdery mildew, begin to develop at the conclusion of an annual plant’s growing season. Your pea crop won’t perish from powdery mildew, but productivity will be slowed. Make a spray with 1 gallon of water, 1 tablespoon baking soda, and 1 tablespoon each of insecticidal soap or Castille soap to treat powdery mildew. In the morning or evening, spray the pea foliage directly with the solution. When spraying, make sure to use gloves and a mask, and wash the peas thoroughly before eating.

Weed pressure

Peas whose growth is being stunted may be encroached upon by other plants. Peas and weeds compete in the soil for minerals, light, and water. Your peas don’t necessarily have to be being choked out by weeds. Make sure that your pea row is not displaced by another garden produce, as absurd as that may sound. Peas require some shade from other plants in your garden, and if they are, they won’t grow as quickly or produce as many flowers or seedpods.

Lack of pollination

Peas without seedpods but blossoms could not be pollinated. Pollinators might not be able to access your pea plants if they are indoors or covered in plastic; without blossoms, there will be no seedpods. Pea plants have two methods of pollination: cross-pollination or self-pollination. It might be necessary to regularly flick the blossoms or use a fan to distribute pollen around in order to encourage peas in a remote place to self-pollinate.

As an alternative, you can purchase and introduce pollinators like blue bottle flies and bumblebees to that area.
