Coneflowers are a staple of the grassland. They are tough, drought-tolerant, long-blooming, and native to eastern North America. They are also produced in an ever-expanding palette of hues. In most gardens, there is at least one variant of the bloom. Coneflowers are best planted in the early spring, after the last frost, as they require up to two years to bloom after germination and three months to generate leaves.

The most well-known type of coneflower is by far the purple form, Echinacea purpurea. It is more tolerant of dividing and transplanting because of its fibrous root system, which is different from other native species’ extensive taproots and woody crowns.

The daisy-like booms of the coneflower are really comprised of a number of miniature flowers with sterile petals that entice insects to the numerous fertile flowers in the central disk or cone. Both bees and butterflies are drawn to the nectar-rich blooms in this area. Coneflowers are also loved by hummingbirds, and birds like finches eat (and disperse) the seeds.

Site Preparation

Purple coneflowers are adaptable and can withstand most circumstances. Plants will grow, though, if you provide them with rich, well-drained soil and lots of sunlight. Before planting, the soil should be heavily amended with organic compost or aged animal dung to greatly increase the health of the plants (watch Flower Gardening from the Ground Upvideo). How to Plant

It is simple to grow echinacea from seed, nursery stock, or division. In the open while a light frost is still possible, sow seeds 1/2 inch deep. Seed germination takes 10 to 20 days. If seeds are sowed early, flowers will usually blossom in their first year (see Summer Flowers for Color).

To prolong the blooming season, regularly pinch off spent blooms or utilize them as cuttings in flower arrangements. To encourage large, gorgeous blossoms, use a high-quality flower fertilizer multiple times during the planting season. Mulch reduces weed growth, retains moisture, and enhances aesthetics.

Insect & Disease Problems

Many garden pests, such as Japanese beetles, aphids, and leaf hoppers, are dangerous to echinacea. For a safe and sensible approach to pest control, check frequently and, if issues arise, take the following actions:

  • Put seriously afflicted plants in the garbage after bagging them up safely.
  • To combat and eliminate insect pests, release beneficial insects that are readily available.

Does Echinacea grow slowly?

WEED CONTROL: The development of first-year Echinacea plants can be gradual, with the exception of E. purpurea, which, if started early enough in a greenhouse and transferred into the field, frequently blossoms the first year. Six to ten weeks after germination, first-year seedlings reach their peak vegetative growth.

About Coneflowers

These quick-growing plants have a height range of 2 to 4 feet, blossom from midsummer till the first fall frost, and self-sow profusely. Coneflowers are named for their elevated, conical centers that draw bees and butterflies. The seed heads draw songbirds like goldfinches once they blossom. Once they are established in a conventional garden or a meadow of wildflowers, coneflowers enjoy the heat and are trouble-free.

The majority of echinacea species are purple (E. purpurea), but there are up to nine naturally occurring varieties that are yellow or purple (E. paradox). More sizes and colors are available with hybrids, but there are drawbacks as well: many of them lack genetic diversity and are sterile, which means they cannot produce viable seed.

The lower stem of the plant, which is frequently prickly, is referred to by its genus name Echinacea, which is derived from the Latin word for hedgehog, echinus. Coneflowers are so named because their elevated, cone-shaped centers are filled with seeds that draw butterflies. After bloom, leave the seed heads on the plant to draw in songbirds like goldfinches! They are less susceptible to deer than other floral plants since they are native plants with thorny stems.

When to Plant Coneflowers

Coneflowers are typically purchased as little plants that will soon bloom. Planting time for these should be in the spring, early summer, or fall.

  • Coneflowers should be planted while they are young and will bloom in the spring or early summer.
  • Eight to ten weeks prior to the last spring frost date, seeds can be started inside. Alternately, plant them outside after the soil has warmed to at least 65°F (18°C). Plants grown from seeds are unlikely to blossom for two to three years.
  • Note: Coneflower plants will rapidly self-seed if you don’t clip them back.
  • Coneflowers should only be divided or moved in the spring or fall.

How to Plant Coneflowers

  • Coneflowers should be spaced 1 to 3 feet apart, depending on the variety’s mature size.
  • Dig a hole that is almost twice as wide as the pot if you are planting from one. The root ball of the plant should be level with the soil surface when it is placed. To the top of the root ball, fill in.
  • At planting, give it plenty of water.
  • To help keep plants wet and discourage weeds, cover the soil top with thin layers of compost, followed by mulch.

  • When stems wilt or after a hard cold, trim them back to the soil line. Cut back in the late winter to encourage self-seeding. When cleaning up the garden in the late winter or early spring, prune back the plants.
  • Optional: Think about allowing late-season flowers to develop on the plants. Birds will be drawn to the seed heads, which will encourage self-seeding. If you prefer not to have self-seeding, deadheading will stop it. Cut the dead flower back to a leaf where you can see a bud that is about to swell in order to deadhead.

Growing Coneflowers in Pots

Coneflowers are often grown in the ground as perennial plants, but you can grow them in pots if the pots are deep enough to accommodate the plant’s taproot. Use containers with drainage holes that are at least 2 or 3 gallons in size. For drainage, spread crushed gravel in the pots’ bottoms. With potting mix, halfway fill the pot. Slow down. Spread the roots out and plant the root ball an inch below the container’s rim. Gently press down the soil after adding it gradually until it is level with the top of the root ball. Deep breathing.

  • Place pots in full morning sun and half afternoon shade after keeping them in partial shade for two to three days.
  • Always deeply water the soil when it feels dry to the touch. There is a risk of fungus from water on leaves.
  • Every few weeks, fertilize the soil with a water-soluble 10-10-10 product.
  • For sustained flowering, remove the dead flowerheads slightly below the flower’s base.
  • When plant development slows in the fall, trim plants to the soil level to overwinter them.
  • Move to a spot with low to moderate indirect light and a cool (40 to 50 °F) temperature.
  • Every few weeks, check the soil and water it lightly if the top 3 inches are dry.
  • If new growth starts to sprout in the spring, relocate to a warmer (60 to 70 °F) and more sunny spot. Moving the plant aids in preparing it for life in the spring and summer outdoors.
  • Avoid watering leaves from above since this can promote fungus on the leaves. Instead, hydrate the soil. If you notice any bugs or aphids, use a neem oil solution spray or an insecticidal soap.

  • The soft-yellow petals of the hybrid echinacea “Cleopatra” have golden-green cores.

Does Echinacea Need Deadheading?

Despite the fact that the majority of us would want to spend the entire day in our gardens, real life interferes. Instead, we choose simple, low-maintenance plants that, despite only requiring a few minutes here and there of care, give the impression that we spent hours in the garden. Coneflower is a plant that I frequently recommend since it can withstand poor soil, extreme heat, drought, full sun to part shade, and it blooms continually whether you deadhead it or not.

Aren’t coneflowers sounding quite good right now? Getting better Echinacea attracts and feeds pollinators and a variety of butterflies when it is in bloom (such as Fritillaries, Swallowtails, Skippers, Viceroy, Red Admiral, American Lady, Painted Lady, and Silvery Checkerspot).

After they stop blooming, their seed-covered “cones serve as a valuable source of food for many birds from late summer to winter (such as goldfinches, chickadees, blue jays, cardinals, and pine siskins). Therefore, when people ask me about deadheading Echinacea plants, I normally advise them to only do it during the flowering period in order to keep the plant looking lovely, but to leave fallen flowers in the late summer to early winter for the birds.

In order to stop Echinacea from reseeding itself all over the garden, you can also deadhead it. Older forms of coneflower can self-seed, though not quite as aggressively as Rudbeckia. Newer hybrids typically do not self-sow and do not generate viable seed. Birds aren’t really interested in these more recent hybrids either.

Should I reduce my fall Echinacea planting?

What time of year should coneflowers be pruned? Depending on your garden objectives and pruning strategy, the answer to this question may change. Keep in mind that some pruning may occur both during the active growing season and during the dormant period.

Fall/Winter Pruning

Coneflowers can be pruned after they become dormant in the late fall or early winter if you choose to keep your garden neat during the colder months. In the fall, trimming back the dormant stalks and seed heads will lessen the likelihood of the plant naturalizing, or spreading. If the seed heads are not trimmed back, native prairie coneflower species, such as Ratibida columnifera and Ratibida pinnata, will easily spread via seed. Pruning in the fall is for you if you have a little garden that you like to maintain neat.

Spring Pruning

On the other hand, I frequently advise delaying the pruning of native plants like coneflowers until the spring for a number of reasons. First of all, during the fall and winter, these flowers offer vital nutrition to the local avian population. You’re helping the local wildlife by letting the seeds stand if your garden is big enough to support some naturalizing by native plants like coneflowers. Additionally, while some gardeners may view the spreading of plants as a drawback, others consider it as an advantage—free plants! Last but not least, seed heads add aesthetic interest to your environment during the winter, when most plants are dormant.

It is ultimately up to you and what you want for your garden whether you decide to prune your plants in the fall or the spring. Moreover, if you have a lot of coneflowers in your yard like I do, you can decide whether to prune part of them in the fall and leave others for the spring.

Do snails consume echinacea?

Every square yard of your garden may have 200 slugs in cool, humid areas. They will often consume older decaying matter and significant decomposing organisms, but if those are not present, they will consume nearly all crop plants (though they have their preferences). Slugs are a serious issue when it’s cool and rainy outside. They are particularly hungry and, when in large numbers, will strip nearly mature plants or destroy an entire bed of seedlings in one night. They can produce up to three generations per year and proliferate quickly. Since they are hermaphrodites, they are able to lay 400 spherical, white eggs per year without even mating.

The glistening trail of mucus that moving mollusks leave behind helps you to recognize their work most of the time. They often begin chewing leaves at the edges and may completely consume a young plant, including the stem and some of the tougher leaf midribs. Slugs had possessed snail-like shells, but they gave them up in favor of their ability to conceal themselves in soil cracks and beneath boulders (they burrow down into the soil when it gets too cold or hot). Keep such material out of the garden because they can also be found behind boards, rocks, and leaves. In fact, boards work well as slug traps as long as you check them each morning.

Snails spend the day hiding in bushes or crevices in your walls, then emerge at night to feed. Removing all of their potential hiding spots is the simplest approach to get rid of snails. The side of a cover crop bed that is next to a lot of vegetation can be fully defoliated, but the other side will remain unaffected (though the defoliation will slowly spread). Be ready because clearing an old crop can drive the snails elsewhere.

Hand picking: Hand picking is the most efficient and environmentally friendly method of controlling slugs and snails. If you want to see much of an impact, do this regularly, preferably late at night or early in the morning. You’ll quickly learn where they like to hide. Slugs frequently conceal themselves in the soil’s cracks, and you can frequently dig around a harmed plant to identify the offender. These critters can be either crushed as you pick them or dropped into a pail of salt water.

You can gather them in a bucket of leaves and move them a short distance if you don’t want to kill them. If you have any gardening competitors, you could leave them in the specific garden where the competitors are.

Barriers: Hand selecting won’t be sufficient to address all of your mollusc issues. Although they travel slowly, they are actually rather mobile (some may walk a mile in a few days), and more can just wander over to where there is food. Ideally, you could build some sort of obstruction, like a 2-foot-wide trail made of crushed oyster shells or cinders. Sawdust, wood ashes, and sharp sand are also thought to function, but they must be kept dry or supplied periodically. The razor-sharp diatomaceous earth shards are fatal to slugs and snails because of their fragile bodies (they are also harmful to human lungs; use a mask). Other barriers include wire screens, tilted boards with grease on the undersides, and copper strips (which they won’t pass).

Trapping: Mollusks can be captured using cups of beer, milk, or yeast that has been dissolved in sugar water (and a few other creatures). Place this in a cup so that the rim is an inch or so above the soil’s level. For these traps to work, there needs to be a lot of them—at least one per square yard. Additionally, traps built of boards, grapefruit skins, chopped potatoes, and cabbage leaves are also possible; however, these do not kill, only facilitate collection (you must check them daily).

Mulch should be avoided since slugs can readily hide there, therefore it is typically not used in places where slugs are a major issue.

Ducks are one of the best pest controllers since they adore slugs and snails. They are also enjoyed by chickens, although they cause more agricultural damage. Slugs and snails are all killed by toads, snakes, birds, and ground beetles—possibly the most significant of these). Even carnivorous slugs that consume other slugs exist (Testacella species) (cannibal slugs).

Metaldehyde: This poison is frequently used to kill slugs, however it is ineffective, likely only killing approximately 10% of those present. It must be handled with caution because it is harmful to mammals and ground beetles, two major predators (poisoned slugs may poison slug predators). Because predators are typically absent there, the greenhouse is where it functions best.
