Avoid letting your tie-colours dry out while they’re curing since that will stop the chemical reaction that makes the dyes permanent. Try urea in your dye mixtures, especially in hot and/or dry conditions, and keep them covered with plastic or in zip-top plastic bags. You will get the nicest, brightest colors while curing in warmer temperatures(70oF and up); the warmer, the brighter. Cover tie-dyes and keep reasonably warm for curing; if in a cooler climate, leave for 2 days instead of 1. Because of this, some people who tie-dye in the winter or in an air-conditioned space in the summer end up with fading colors.
- Pro Tip: Cover your tie-dyes to cure outside in the sun with a thin sheet of black or dark plastic or a tarp to maximize warmth and shorten curing times. In the winter, professionals have been known to cover the plastic with electric blankets. There are numerous answers to this problem.
Time is your friend, and a full day is ideal. – It takes time for the dyes to adhere to the fabric. Give them enough time to complete their work. For the best and brightest colors, we advise a minimum of 24 hours; allowing the dyes enough time to “fix” also makes the rinse and washout much simpler.

(Tip: Before starting the wash cycle, drain the water and replenish it with fresh, hot water and Kieralon or professional textile detergent if it starts to look really muddy.)
Too much white on your finished tie-dye – Check to see whether you’re using enough dye and if the squeeze bottles’ tips are going into the folds. You may also check to see if the fabric is tied or folded too tightly.
How wet is your fabric? – Colors blending together In particular with the mixed colors, applying dye to fabric that is drenched in water will result in a significantly different outcome than if the fabric is only slightly damp. Many dye colors will separate or get diluted when they touch the fabric if the dye is applied to a particularly moist piece of fabric.
If your cloth is dyed, is it sitting in any dye puddles? If so, you don’t want the dyes to bleed here. Make sure you are not putting too much color and have something absorbent underneath the fabric. Make sure your rubber bands or ties are sufficiently tight. Try sinew or tie-dye string, which is what many experts use, or reusable zip ties if rubber bands don’t work for you.
Pro tip To prevent them from sitting in puddles, you can also store your tie-dyes on stainless steel or plastic coated racks. To ensure they don’t dry out, cover them with plastic.
The majority of our dye colors are mixtures made up of many dye colors, or “color splitting.” Mixed colors can separate if your cloth is too wet, and you will see the colors in the mix rather than the intended color. Pale Colors: It’s crucial to consider the pH of the fabric before applying the dye: Please use the appropriate fixative (we don’t mean to offend anyone, but don’t forget the fixative!) – The Dense Formula of Soda Ash, if you can find it locally; if not, check your pH using the instructions below to make sure you’re using enough.
If you purchased it locally to raise the pH, double-check that you didn’t unintentionally purchase sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) instead of sodium carbonate (soda ash). Make sure your employees didn’t unintentionally pre-soak the shirts in Urea water (or something else) instead of Soda Ash water if you have any (for you expert dyers). Yes, it has happened. If your colors are coming out pale, conduct a pH test; the soda soak water should be 10.5 or higher. Very old soda ash or soda ash that has been incorrectly stored may lose its alkalinity.
- The pH of the somewhat acidic fabric may progressively decrease if you are soaking A LOT of things in the soda ash solution. You can check the pH and, if necessary, add a little more soda ash.
- To avoid rinsing out at least some of the soda ash solution and creating stains while using the washing machine to spin out surplus soda ash solution, make sure no water is released during the spin cycle. Put a dry shirt through the spin cycle to test your machine; if it gets wet, don’t use it.
- There is less space for the dye in the fabric if it is overly moist. After the soda ash soak, make sure to properly wash everything out.
- If the fabric is too dry, the soda ash can dry into a fine powder that is easily airborne and irritating, forming a crust that actually hinders the dye from penetrating the fabric. You can re-wet the fabric with a gentle spray of additional soda ash solution if the soda ash has dried on it.
- The night before you plan to apply the dyes, pre-soak the fabric in soda ash for several hours. The sweet spot, according to our research, is exactly between damp and dry.
The importance of temperature Use LUKEWARM water (98–105°F) to paste up the dye in a baby bottle-like fashion. AVOID using hot water.
Hot water issues can arise. As they age, mixes can also undergo significant change. Additionally, avoid leaving the lids on color powders open while working on other projects. Humidity causes dyes to quickly deteriorate. In storage, dyes that are exposed to high temperatures also age significantly more quickly. Dyes purchased from retail art or craft stores may be extremely stale because they have been sitting on shelves and in warehouses for a very long time.
