Near the intersection of South Second Street and West Church Street, in Public Parking Lot K’s green space, a crooked and gnarled tree frequently attracts attention from onlookers. The City of Marshalltown is attempting to preserve the arbora Japanese Tree Lilac, even though it is nearing the end of its life.

Are hardy Japanese lilac trees?

Creamy-white flowers are produced at the tips of the branches in lengthy panicles that can reach 12 inches in length. The early summer flower clusters are mildly scented and bloom for one to two weeks before losing their allure. Hawk moths are one type of insect that pollinate flowers.

The fruit is a 3/4-inch-long brown, warty, dry capsule. Two winged seeds are inside each capsule. Throughout the winter, the plant still bears the huge clusters of capsules. The fruit is made up of a group of wind-dispersed seed capsules.
