I wanted to provide an update on the survivability of my saved seeds.
This is VERY fascinating to me! I’ve had multiple baggies of seeds in my refrigerator’s crisper bin for more than two years. I removed a few of the baggies and infused each one with H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide and spring water) to hasten the germination process. ALL of the leftover seeds of these are being grown by me. My initial findings have been:
Two Man in the Moon x Rainbow Maker seeds (obtained in the fall of 2013) have both produced roots and have been sown in a cup. All I had left were these two seeds.
Cindy’s Tie Dye x Bluegrass Music 2 seeds (obtained in the fall of 2013) – Both have been sown in a cup and have developed roots. All I had left were these two seeds.
I also have numerous seeds that are under a year old and some that are under two years old. So yet, only a few of those have sprouted. Some of the more recent ones have seed rot in the water-filled baggies, indicating that they were either not viable or had other germination problems, which I would assume occurred while they were with the hybridizer/seller. I mention that because I immediately put the seeds I receive in the refrigerator after they arrive. Unless the seeds are not viable or there is some other problem with where I got them, I typically achieve a germination rate of at least 85% to 90% and frequently greater.
I was very aback to notice that both of the seed crosses above were starting to sprout roots after reading that the seeds might not be viable after two years! I still have more seeds that need to sprout. Since most of my seeds have been soaking in H2O2 water for a week, only a few crosses—including the four above—have really sprouted. Those four seeds are among the earliest ones. Newer seeds are all those that are sprouting. Some of these, I’m not sure how old they are. Not all of the seeds float, but the majority do. Seeds that float and those that don’t are both sprouting.

How long do daylily seeds last?
It is necessary to stratify seeds in order for the embryonic portion of the seed to be able to germinate. Some seeds also need a period of cold weather to end their dormancy.
Daylily seeds can fulfill both of these requirements for germination by being given a chilly, damp chill time.
The seeds in the baggie that have been in the fridge for months will begin to sprout once you add moisture to it.
Seeds I kept in a dry chill, or dry without any moisture, inside the refrigerator have not germinated.
If the seeds are viable, they will always germinate inside the refrigerator when a moist medium, such as vermiculite or a damp paper towel, is added to the bag. Although not all of them germinate at once, this will start the process.
The methods I have used with great success include:
- Daylily seeds are placed in a ziplock bag with damp vermiculite. After a month in the refrigerator, plant.
- Daylily seeds should be wrapped in a wet paper towel or coffee filter and stored in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator. Make sure the daylily roots don’t weave into the paper towel; if they do, remove them with extreme caution. After a month, plant.
You can plant the seeds after a month if they begin to sprout before then.

Growing daylilies from seed is a fairly simple process. But keep in mind that whatever you grow from seed will be different from the parent, sometimes quite different. For example, you might obtain an orange daylily from a pink parent or a pale yellow that is only marginally different from a yellow.
A daylily should produce green, squat seed pods after being crossed. Gather the seeds when the pods start to brown and shatter; they should be black, not brown or white. You now have two options. My method is to place the seeds in a paper envelope and keep them dry and cool until late winter. The seeds are then placed between damp paper towels in an aluminum pie dish, placed inside a plastic bag, and stored in the refrigerator for three to four weeks. I then nurture the seeds in flats or pots in my greenhouse so that I can plant them later.

The manner of my grandfather: My grandfather resided in Maryland. In the fall, he manually sowed his seeds into the earth in rows. To get rid of all weeds, he first fumigated the earth. Weeds could outgrow daylilies if you plant them in the ground. Finally, keep in mind that it can take the daylilies 2-3 years to bloom. But nothing beats the thrill of witnessing your seedling bloom for the first time!
My daylily stems are sprouting little leaves, making them resemble miniature daylilies. Describe them.
They go by the name Proliferations and resemble the extra plants that the indoor spider plant produces. Proliferations should be handled similarly to rooted cuttings. A smart strategy is to place them in a pot filled with sand. They ought should start to grow roots rather rapidly. However, they require additional care to survive the winter because they don’t establish a substantial root system before fall. They should be stored in a safe location, such as an unheated garage, because they also need to go dormant.
Can you grow Day Lilies from seeds?

Daylily seed pods are used to harvest their seeds. I normally count 6 to 8 seeds on average each pod (although some pods will have fewer seeds and some will produce more). Depending on the cultivar of the parent daylily, the seed size and shape can change. Black seeds predominate. Every plant that sprouts from a seed is different. The blossoms are where each plant’s individuality will be most obvious. You can gather seeds from your own daylily collection, purchase seeds from vendors such as the Lily Auction, eBay, etc., or swap seeds with other gardeners. All three of these places have provided me with seeds, and I’ve grown some gorgeous plants from just one tiny seed.
Make sure the pod is ripe before gathering seeds from your own garden. It will appear dried out and be a dark brown color. When the seeds are ready, the pod will begin to break open. The seeds can be gathered, divided, and labeled into various paper envelopes and allowed to air dry for a few days. After that, put them in plastic baggies and give the name of the parent(s) to each bag. The pollen parent is listed after the pod parent (if you know it, otherwise just list the pod parent). Until I’m ready to plant them, I keep my seeds in the refrigerator’s cool crisper drawer.
Daylily seeds can be sown and grown in a variety of ways. I’ll explain to you how I handle it.
Although they can be planted at any time, I like to start my seeds in the late summer or early fall.
Gather the following materials:
The first step is to carefully poke 5-7 drain holes in the bottom of each styrofoam cup you intend to use with the little screwdriver. Put some potting soil in each cup. Put the cups in a shoe box made of plastic. In a measuring or serving cup, combine spring water with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and mix. Until the water drips out of the drain holes and settles the soil, pour the hydrogen peroxide solution over the potting soil in each Styrofoam cup. (If additional potting mix is required, add it until the soil is about an inch or so below the rim of the cup.) One seed should be inserted into the hole you made in the dirt using the bottom of the permanent marking pen, which should be about 1 1/2 inches deep. For the germination phase, I sow 3-5 seeds from the same hybrid cross per cup. Add potting dirt over the seeds. Label the seeds with a plant marker or write something on the Styrofoam cup. Each cup needs a bit extra water. (You might need to empty the shoe box container of any extra water.) If I use 8 to 12 oz cups, I usually get 6 cups with each carton (fewer if I use larger cups).
Put the box with the cups in a south window that receives direct sunlight for the majority of the day, or if there is no sun, place it directly 12″ beneath a bright fluorescent light. (Shop lights are excellent artificial lighting options.) then be patient as you wait for the seeds to sprout. The time it takes to see germination might range from a few days to possibly a month or more. The bulk of my seeds typically germinate within 10 days. I normally achieve a germination rate of 95-98 percent with viable seeds when utilizing this technique. When watering, keep using the spring water and H2O2 mixture. I typically just water deeply once per week. I fertilize them with a liquid fertilizer when they begin to grow 4 or more leaves, but only at a decreased 1/4 intensity. I keep using the diluted strength and fertilize once a month.
You might be curious as to why I use foam cups. (I realize this isn’t “environment friendly”) Styrofoam appeals to me for two fundamental reasons: The styrofoam makes it simpler to pierce drain holes into the bottom of the cup, which also serves as a temperature insulator. Additionally, I keep using the cups because they endure well. Growing plants indoors is uplifting during the gloomy and chilly winter months. Daylily seedlings don’t require much room and are tolerant as long as they receive weekly waterings, monthly fertilizations, and 6 to 8 hours of warm light each day. Do daylily seeds require stratification?
Q. Occasionally, one of my daylily plants will produce a seed pod. They have set a lot of seed pods this year. Although I haven’t had much luck getting the seeds to sprout, I’m still hopeful. Is there a secret involved?
A. I believe that when the chance to develop a surprise plant arises, the majority of gardeners are thrilled. Yes, there is a secret to getting daylily seeds to germinate. When the seed capsule of your daylily looks dry and the seeds inside it rattle, start collecting the seeds. Take the seeds out of the capsule, then combine them with a little bit (about 1/2 cup) of moist potting soil. Use a seed-starting mix or other commercial potting soil that has undergone sterilization to reduce the risk of plant diseases.
Daylily seeds must be stratified, or exposed to cold for a minimum of six weeks, in order to break their natural dormancy. This can be accomplished by putting the seed-soil mixture in a container and cooling it for the necessary six weeks. To stop unwelcome dirt smells from entering the refrigerator, make sure the container is tightly sealed. Be sure to carefully mark the container as well to prevent anyone from thinking it contains some neglected leftovers. On the label, also note the day you began the stratification procedure.
Distribute the seed mixture over a flat of moist potting soil at room temperature after the six-week stratification period. While you’re waiting for germination to take place, keep the soil just a little bit moist. At 60 to 70 degrees, germination takes two to six weeks, but some seeds could not sprout for several weeks. When the seedlings are big enough to handle easily, transplant them into individual pots. Until they are big enough to plant in the garden and it is warm enough outside, they can be kept in their pots.
Before the plants blossom, it can take a number of years, but if you’re patient, you might be rewarded with a plentiful supply of “free plants.” The best part is that you might find flowers that are original to your garden and distinct from their parents.
A bag of pea seeds that have been treated with diatomaceous earth was purchased by me. Why is this happening, exactly? Are vegetable seeds safe?
A. To prevent potential insect damage while in storage, the seeds have been coated with diatomaceous earth, a chemical-free method of protection. A family of microscopic algae’s skeletal remains are used to make diatomaceous earth. When pulverized, these ruins have many sharp edges and are almost entirely composed of silica. An insect’s protective shell is destroyed and it loses bodily fluids when it comes into contact with these edges. The insect dies as a result of losing vital bodily water.
