Are the stems and leaves fading to black? Perhaps the stems have a shepard’s crook-like droop to them.
These are all signs that the bacterial blight on your lilac plant is present.
It appears that the conditions were right for this sickness to emerge this year. Frost damage was brought on by snow and freezing conditions in the middle of April, just as the lilac leaves and flower buds were beginning to emerge. We have the ideal environment for this sickness when you combine that with the spring’s chilly, damp weather.
Pseudomonas syringae, often known as bloom or shoot blight, is the bacterium that causes lilac bacterial blight. All varieties of lilacs, including Chinese, Japanese, Persian, and our common lilac, are susceptible to it (Syringa vulgaris).
Some lilac varieties, such as Syringa patula “Miss Kim,” “Superba” Littleleaf Lilac (Syringa microphylla), and dwarf Korean lilac, have demonstrated resistance to this disease (Syringa meyeri).
Only a small number of common lilac varieties, including “Sensation,” “Krasavitska Moskvy,” “President Grevy,” “Edith Cavelle,” and “Victor Lemoine,” have demonstrated resilience.
Lilac blight presents with signs that resemble those of frost damage. Emerging leaves, floral buds, and new shoots are all vulnerable.
On leaves, symptoms first appear as tiny, pinpoint-sized water-soaked patches. It’s possible to see a yellow halo surrounding the area.
Rapid blackening of leaf margins creates a characteristic wedge-shaped pattern all the way to the petiole. If spots begin to appear before the leaves have fully opened, the leaves may twist and curl.
Lilac blossoms may also carry an infection. Flower buds that are infected may not open, or they may open but turn black and die.
The disease appears as small brown patches that quickly spread, especially on stems and twigs when there has been a lot of rain. Infected twigs may get girdled, become black, topple down, and succumb.
The spring is when this is most obvious. This resembles fire blight in apples if you are familiar with such diseases.
Toxins made by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae injure the lilac cells. To infiltrate the plant tissue and spread infection, it requires a wound or other natural opening.
Plant stress is linked to lilac blight. Infected plants are those that have been injured, have endured previous droughts, or may have received inappropriate fertilizer.
The basic suggestion for preventing lilac blight is to get rid of all diseased material. 10 to 12 inches below the obvious infection, prune diseased branches.
Only prune during dry, sunny conditions to reduce the spread to fresh cuts. Between each cut, disinfect pruning implements with a 10% bleach solution to prevent the spread of the bacteria.
Infected plant matter ought to be thrown away or destroyed, not composted or piled on top of other vegetation.

Look for resistant species or cultivars when purchasing new lilacs. If you are establishing fresh lilacs, stay away from watering the foliage.
Numerous locations, including healthy plant tissue and plant waste like fallen leaves, are suitable for this bacterium to overwinter. It may also hibernate in the soil around your lilac plant or in perennial weeds.
The scale of your lilac may make it impractical for a homeowner to perform the spraying. One suggestion is to spray copper sulfate in the early spring to ward off illness.
Since copper fungicides are preventative rather than curative, they would need to be applied before symptoms materialize.

The lilac bush would have to be entirely covered. Be aware that some pollutants might make some lilac cultivars poisonous.
A broad spectrum biofungicide called Serenade Garden is approved for use against Pseudomonas species. According to the current label, it may be applied to treat lilacs either before the foliar illness manifests itself or at the first sign of infection.
Another suggestion would be to apply a copper fungicide in September that is designated for lilacs and blight and to repeat the application just before the start of the fall rainy season. Pss is distributed more frequently by wind and rain than by insects or by pruning instruments. Pss frequently lives on the surface of healthy plants without harming them. The bacterium can cause infections when it enters tissue naturally or by wounds brought on by insects, pruning, wind damage, or hail.
How can a plant that has bacterial blight be saved? Dispose of sick branches by burning or burying them after cutting them off 10 to 12 inches below the point of noticeable symptoms. Always prune in dry weather, and after every cut, disinfect pruning shears by putting them in a 10% bleach solution or alcohol for at least 30 seconds (spray disinfectants that contain at least 70 percent alcohol can also be used).
How can I prevent bacterial blight issues in the future? Lilacs should be planted with sufficient space between the shrubs. Each winter, thin individual shrubs to encourage proper airflow (see UW Garden Facts XHT1015 for pruning tips). To prevent stress that could make shrubs susceptible to disease, properly fertilize, water, and mulch them. Avoid watering overhead because it can keep the leaves damp. You might want to use a mixture of copper- and mancozeb-containing fungicides to reduce bacterial blight if you’ve experienced issues. Fungicides should be applied twice to three times, seven to ten days apart, as leaves emerge but before symptoms appear. To ensure that you use the fungicide in the safest and most efficient way possible, make sure to read and adhere to all label directions.
Is bacterial blight treatable?
It is feasible to recover healthy parts of a plant after it has contracted bacterial blight and keep it alive. However, there is no cure for the illness. The only route is through management. The bacterial blight is not actually curable.
The initial stage in disease control is pruning infected plant material. Plant damaged areas should be removed and thrown away. Never put them in the compost bin!
After pruning, keep your instruments clean and sanitize them to prevent the disease from spreading to other plant life.
After pruning, if the disease still worsens, it might be best to cut your losses and destroy the entire plant. If the plant is left untreated, the disease could spread to nearby garden plants.
Fungicides can be used in severe blight situations where a fungus is present, although they aren’t always effective once the disease has reached an advanced stage. Once more, even fungicides can only slow the disease’s progress.
Why are my lilac bush’s leaves curling and becoming brown?

How to Choose Lilacs
The common lilac is what you will most likely find when you go plant shopping. This traditional plant comes in a variety of cultivars and variations, each of which yields fragrant spring flowers in pink, purple, white, or even combinations of those hues. Common lilacs are typically the most fragrant variety of lilac and can grow to be rangy and large.
Rebloomers have arrived in the garden center thanks to recent introductions of hybrids between the common lilac and other shrub-type lilacs. Some of these more recent types are a little less fragrant, but they also tend to be smaller, bloom more frequently throughout the growing season, and have fewer powdery mildew issues.
The tree lilac is another common variety of lilac. It can grow to a height of around 20 feet and blooms with cream-colored flowers in the middle of the summer. Though it doesn’t require much trimming, keep in mind that the tree lilac is a tree, not a shrub.
Where to Plant Lilacs
Lilacs should be planted in full light (at least 6 to 8 hours per day), as too much shadow will prevent them from blooming. Lilacs also prefer moist, well-drained soil that is slightly alkaline.
When to Plant Lilacs
Before the ground freezes in the late fall is the ideal time to plant lilacs. After the earth thaws in the early spring, that is the next ideal period to plant. Lilacs will likely need to be planted as soon as you can locate them at the garden center, which is great; if you choose to do so during a warmer season, they might require additional watering.
How to Prepare the Soil for Planting Lilacs
A soil test should be performed prior to planting since lilacs thrive in slightly alkaline (6.5 to 7.0 pH), moist, well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. Lime must be added to raise the pH if it is below 5.5. It’s time to get the soil ready when you’ve obtained the ideal pH.
