While they were beautiful to look at when we originally built the floral arrangement for our Mother’s Day Frache Table, it didn’t take long for them to start to look very melancholy. I was able to keep them from being thrown away thanks to this simple approach, and the flowers still looked new and fresh!

Keep in mind that hydrangeas might wilt to a certain extent after which they cannot recover. The good news is that this hack is really easy to use and doesn’t call for anything complicated, so why not give it a shot?

Consequently, having a successful cut flower business requires more than just growing those lovely field-grown flowers.

Flowers undergo physiological changes after being removed from the plant, which frequently causes an early onset of senescence. Delay tactics require careful consideration of a variety of handling factors. The quality and longevity of the flowers will be influenced by a number of factors, including the stage and time of day that they are harvested, bunching, sleeving, boxing (if necessary), temperature treatment, and the holding solution. In this essay, I’ll go over how sugars impact cut flower quality after harvest and what a farmer may do to improve postharvest results.

Time of Year and Flower Quality: The cut flower industry has long recognized that flowers grown in greenhouses during the winter, when days are short and natural light intensity is low, are frequently of inferior quality than those grown during other seasons. As temperatures fall and the number of hours available for photosynthetic activity decreases in the fall in the Northeast, many field-grown cut flowers lose postharvest quality. Therefore, it is more important to provide external sugar to flowers gathered in the fall than to those taken in the summer. All field-grown cut flowers should be put in a preservative solution to increase their postharvest life and maintain their quality.

Sugars: In order to ensure a long postharvest life and to reduce mechanical damage that could happen during handling, many blooms are harvested before they are fully matured. Food (carbohydrates) is needed for the growth of these flower buds, and they are stored in the leaves and stems. When the buds are taken at a tight-bud stage, it’s possible that there won’t be enough of these stored carbohydrates for the flower bud to use. Even for flowers that are harvested when fully developed, the preservation of metabolic activities, including respiration, necessitates the provision of appropriate reserves in order to attain a tolerable postharvest life. Low quantities of stored carbs cause flowers and leaves to rapidly senesce, while low sugar levels cause petals to form with weak colors. In these circumstances, by adding table sugar (sucrose) to the vase solutions, supplements can be given to the flowers. However, it’s crucial to keep in mind that a sugar solution is ideal for the development of bacteria, thus a biocide should also be included in the vase solution (see below).

Cut flowers can be given external sugars by adding a specified quantity of sugar and a biocide to the vase solution. Depending on the flowers being treated, there are a variety of different sugar concentrations that are ideal. A constant 2 percent sugar solution in the vase solution is beneficial for the majority of flowers. Higher concentrations, such as a 4–6% sugar solution, have been demonstrated to be beneficial for several flowers, including gladioli. When exposed to sugar concentrations more than 1%, other flowers like coralbells and zinnias suffer damage. Others, like Chrysanthemums and China Asters, can be preserved successfully without the use of sugar. Therefore, it is crucial that a small-scale experiment be carried out using the data in Table 1 as a reference before treating the full batch of flowers. By mixing two level tablespoons of sugar with a quart of water, it is possible to create a solution that closely resembles a 1 percent sugar solution. (To be precise, dissolve 10 grams of sugar and add water to get a 1-liter solution.) Add a biocide to that to prevent the development of microbes.

Biocides: Physan, a disinfectant used in restaurants, and household bleach are two popular biocides. For the majority of cut flowers, a solution of 50 ppm bleach or 100 ppm Physan works effectively. Add 1 ml of bleach to a liter (quart) of solution to get a 50 ppm bleach solution, and 0.5 ml of Physan to a liter of solution to get a 100 ppm Physan solution. (A pharmaceutical dropper is helpful for measuring extremely little amounts. One dropper of bleach or roughly half a dropper of Physan per quart or liter will provide approximately the needed ppm. This is available from a pharmacy and often contains.8 or 1.0 ml.) Remember that bleach degrades with time, thus daily use of newly produced solutions is advised. Pre-testing on a small sample of flowers is crucial because both biocides have the potential to discolor the stems of some flowers.

Treatment in pulses: This technique involves ‘loading’ the stems and leaves with large amounts of sugar for a brief period of time, usually overnight. The term “pulse therapy” is used to describe this procedure. The procedure probably enables sufficient sugar accumulation in the leaves and stem during that time to aid in bloom formation. Using a 20 percent sugar solution to pulse Gladiolus stems before marketing is a typical illustration. Gladioli that have been pumped over night produce flowers that open higher on the spike, are larger, and have a longer vase life overall. While pulse treatment is effective with some cut flowers, it is not always effective. Sometimes the stems are unable to absorb enough carbohydrates during that brief treatment period, rendering the benefits of a pulse treatment ineffective.

Citric Acid: Citric acid, which is used to reduce the pH, is an important component of a preservative solution that is essential for the handling of cut flowers from fields. It has been demonstrated that water with a low pH (pH=3.5) moves more quickly through the water-conducting system (xylem), preventing or lessening flower withering, which is a common occurrence in field-grown flowers. Commercial rehydration solutions (like Hydraflor) frequently have citric acid concentrations high enough to reduce the pH of the fluid to 3.5. However, if flowers begin to wilt soon after being harvested, they should be put in a solution made entirely of citric acid (no sugars), left overnight in a cool, dimly lit area, and then transferred to a solution with sugar as a preservative. Most pharmacies provide online ordering for citric acid, which is now $8 per pound. 350 to 500 ppm of citric acid is sufficient for the majority of water, depending on the water’s quality. Because the size of the crystals (and hence weight per teaspoonful) might vary from one manufacturer to another, it is unfortunately challenging to convert this into teaspoons of citric acid per volume of water. The most precise technique to get the solution is to weigh out the citric acid if a gram scale is available. (A liter of 350 to 500 ppm solution can be made with between 0.35 grams and 0.5 grams of citric acid.) Another way to determine the right quantity of citric acid to mix into the solution is to use pH indicator paper or a pH “pen” (available from a greenhouse supplier). (Continue to add citric acid until the solution’s pH is decreased to 3.5.)

Recipe for a Preservative Solution: To ensure that your clients’ flowers have superior postharvest quality, you might also wish to provide them with a straightforward recipe for a preservative solution. The first recipe is for combining 1 to 1 1/2 droppers of household bleach with 3 cans of water and 1 can of non-diet citrus soda. The second recipe calls for 1 quart of water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 2 tablespoons of fresh lime or lemon juice, and 1/2 tablespoon of bleach. Once the components are combined, the cut flower solution is ready. These solutions have the three main active ingredients—sugar, citric acid, and a biocide—necessary for an effective preservative solution. These solutions must be changed daily, or at the very least every other day, because they contain bleach, which inhibits the growth of bacteria.

5% sugar should be used in the vase solution. A 5–10% sugar solution is required for the development of buds that are harvested at the tight-bud stage, with just 5% of the buds opened.

Does not gain from sugar-containing solutions. Make sure the flowers are dried in a container that is not shared with any other flowers.

You can utilize sugar concentrations up to 6%. However, it can result in stem elongation. The majority of the time, submerging the flowers in a bleach solution is adequate.

Place stems in a 4-6 percent sugar solution. A higher percentage of larger flowers with a longer vase life will result by pulsing the flowers in a 20 percent sugar solution.

The opening of the flower buds will be improved by a vase solution with 2-3% sugar. Higher amounts could hasten the yellowing of leaves. Leaf yellowing can be avoided by lightly misting leaves with a growth regulator solution containing 25–50 ppm GA4+7 before or right away after harvest.

Use no sugar at all or only 0.5% of the solution for the vase. Greater concentrations may harm leaves.

Sugar makes flowers weigh more when they are fresh and extends the vase life. Use 0.5% to 1% Floralife (concentration of sugar not specified).

The presence of sugar in the vase solution lengthens the vase’s lifespan and boosts the quantity and size of open flowers. Sugar concentration is unknown (1-1.5 percent Florever).

The opening and color of the higher buds on the spikes will be improved with a 1.5 percent sugar solution.

Place the flowers in a 4 percent sugar solution and let them soak all night. Because it harms the petals and shortens the vase life, Physan should not be used as a biocide.

Put flowers in a biocide-containing solution. It is not suggested to use sugar in the preservative.

Flowers that have an asterisk (*) next to them will benefit from a pulse application of STS or another anti-ethylene chemical.
