Abstract
Fabrics with a polyester/cotton blend are often dyed using a two-bath or one-bath two-step dyeing process. The method described in this study uses azeotropic ternary mixtures of organic solvents as a pretreatment to dye polyester/cotton blends utilizing reactive and dispersion colors in a single bath. Results from investigations using SEM, FTIR, DSC, and XRD to examine the impact of solvent pretreatments on dyeability, fastness, and a few physicochemical parameters are provided.
Introduction
Commercially produced polyester/cotton blend fabrics are colored using a two-bath or one-bath two-step dyeing process, depending on the fiber, and the right chemicals and dyes [1].
The two bath dyeing processes are rather drawn-out and challenging. Compared to the two-bath approach, the one-bath two-step dyeing process is quicker, but it has lesser dyeability and poorer repeatability [24]. Cotton is dyed using standard reactive dyes under alkaline circumstances around 80°C, which is a completely different process from polyester, which is dyed under acidic conditions above 120°C using dispersed colors. The dyeing of polyester/cotton blends in one bath has been the subject of numerous studies using both traditional dispersed dyes and newly created reactive dyes, which can be introduced concurrently to the same bath and dyed at acidic or neutral conditions around 100–130C [58].
