The variety and cold hardiness of your hydrangea will determine its propensity to survive a harsh winter.
Some hydrangeas that bloom on old wood are root-hardy down to -20 F (-30 C), which means that any damage frost causes will often be superficial and won’t result in the plant’s death, except from preventing flowering the next season.
But not all hydrangeas exhibit these characteristics. Freezing weather and chilly winter winds can cause some hydrangeas to perish by drying them out. Dehydration can result from cold weather’s ability to draw moisture from stems and leaves.
The new growth on hydrangeas that bloom on new wood might be harmed by a late frost in the early spring. The water in a plant’s cells can freeze if the temperature is low enough, resulting in tissue damage and eventual plant death in some areas.
As a result, you must plan ahead for these events and develop a winter and spring frost prevention strategy.
Will the damage caused by the recent cold heal?
One of the most exquisite and many flowers you may have in your garden or landscape is a hydrangea. But they can be suddenly and unexpectedly damaged by cold and frost. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to assist your hydrangeas regain their former beauty, if not this year then most definitely the following.
Your Hydrangea can nearly always bounce back from damage brought on by cold and frost, despite the fact that it can be a significant setback. Wait till the weather has warmed up before pruning back the harmed growth on damaged hydrangeas. Your hydrangea might still bloom this year and return to its typical growth patterns the following spring.
A hydrangea can be harmed by frost and cold, but happily, these plants are fairly resilient. Frost-damaged hydrangeas will probably recover with a little TLC if pruned properly, even though it might affect this year’s flowers.
Do hydrangeas require defense against frost?

What temperature is too low for hydrangeas?
Many people were dissatisfied last year because their hydrangea shrubs produced few, if any, flowers. It was assumed that the particularly hard winter was to blame.
There are numerous hydrangea species, but the majority of them that are grown by homeowners in their gardens belong to the genus Hydrangea macrophylla.
The two groupings of H. macrophylla are distinguished by the appearance of their flowers. The mopheads have a broad, rounded shape and can range in color from red to pink to white to blue to green and many colors in between. Similar in color, the lacecaps are flattened corymbs with fertile blooms in the center and spectacular clusters of sepals of various sizes around them.
Hardiness zones 6 to 9 apply to H. macrophylla. A hydrangea should, in theory, be able to withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees. However, in the real world, temperatures as low as 12 degrees and freezes in the late fall or early spring may limit this hydrangea’s ability to flower.
H. macrophylla forms its bloom buds in the summer and the fall in response to the shorter days and chilly temperatures. To achieve bud dormancy, the bud must be refrigerated for 1,000–1,200 hours, or roughly seven weeks.
As the weather gets warmer, buds open, shoots appear, and blooms grow. Flower buds and vegetative stems will perish if this happens at the end of February, as it did last year and may do this year as well. In the spring, the plant might grow again from the root, but it won’t produce flowers. It has sturdy roots, but delicate flower buds.
On fresh wood, on the woody stems from the current year, H. macrophylla flowers. If a shrub needs to be pruned, it should have been done last year when the blooming season had just ended. Avoid pruning it. You will now remove any budding flower buds.
I have been growing my favorite variety of H. macrophylla for almost 15 years, and it is called “Blue Billows.”
Dr. Richard Lighty of the Mount Cuba Center in Hockessin, Delaware, originally grew this lacecap, Hydrangea serrata, from seed gathered in the Korean mountains. The inner fertile flowers are a darker blue than the outer sterile blossoms, which are blue with a pink blush.
Before relatively recently, the taxonomists classified the H. serrata variation as a distinct species from the macrophylla. It possesses each of the traits that distinguish H. macrophylla from other species. The leaves are smaller, though, and it has a stunning copper-red fall color. From June to October, the plant blooms; as fall approaches, the blossoms turn over to reveal pink undersides.
It is situated for me in some moderate shade with drained soil. They call it a “robust plant.
Most recently, the big root ball split in two when I moved it to a shadier spot. I then discovered that it had sucker-grown or air-layered three smaller plants.
It is a dense shrub that grows to be about 3 feet tall and wide, and it is so covered in leaf and flowers that I was unaware I had four additional plants until I started to move it.
This low-maintenance shrub works well as a border shrub or as a foundation plant. And it will offer you profusion that you can keep or gift to others as a reward. It was chosen by the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society in 1990 as a Gold Medal Plant.
Depending on the amount of aluminum ions in the soil, the color of the flower varies. In more acidic soils, the concentration is higher, whereas in more alkaline soils, it is lower. For the majority of H. macrophylla and H. serrata cultivars, acidic soil (pH 5.5 and below) will result in blue flowers, whereas neutral to alkaline soils (pH 6.5 and higher) will typically result in pink flowers. The blooms will be purple or a combination of blue and pink blossoms will be seen on the same plant between pH 5.5 and pH 6.5.
The most constant guideline for growing hydrangeas, though, is that there is a lot of variety and no absolutes.
At this time of year, Hydrangea arborescens is another hydrangea that merits discussion. It also appears as lacecap and mophead flowers. The names “Annabelle,” “Invincible Spirit,” and “Grandiflora” are a few well-known cultivars. All of these flower on fresh wood. Cut them to the ground now, in late winter, and apply a mild fertilizer.
Place a support structure around the plant before it starts to grow since the flowers are frequently too heavy for the stems to keep the plant upright.
The new plant will start to bloom in June or July and continue to do so for several weeks.
As the petals wilt, cut the stem at the base and remove the leaves if you want to dry them. Cut them to the length you want, then hang them backwards. They make wonderful dried flowers and can be sprayed with spray paint to add color.
Do late frosts harm hydrangeas?
A late-season frost can damage fragile, new growth on hydrangeas (Hydrangea spp. ), resulting in little or no blooms in the upcoming spring and summer depending on the species’ resistance to cold and the time of year flower buds are developed.
Bigleaf hydrangeas (H. macrophylla), perennials that thrive in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 11, are particularly susceptible since the majority of kinds flower on the growth from the previous year, delaying the production of new buds by a full year.
Other hydrangeas bloom on the growth from the current year, but a late-season frost might impede or lessen the blooming. How can I protect a plant from frost?

Knowing when prized vegetation starts to turn frost-burned brown will help you know what to do when freeze warnings are in effect. As a general rule, plants typically freeze when the temperature stays at 28°F for five hours.
There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. When temps drop to 32–33F, seedlings often die because of their delicate new leaves. There are many low-temperature thresholds for tropical plants. Some collapse at temperatures below 40°F, while others break down at 35°F. Other plants are naturally resistant and can endure temperatures as low as 18 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Do a search in gardening books and internet resources to discover the threshold for your plants.
Take it up
Moving plants away from potential danger is the simplest cold-protection strategy. Potted plants and seedlings in flats both benefit from this. Moving plants onto a porch with a roof, into a garage or shed, or under a deck frequently provides sufficient shelter.
Rely on Water
Just before sunset, water the soil to raise the temperature of the surrounding air overnight as the water evaporates. Water-filled buckets or gallon jugs should be left in the sun all day. Move them close to threatened plants at night. Air temperatures will be moderated by the water, and if it freezes, heat will be released. Inverting baskets, coolers, or any other container with a firm bottom over plants is also an option. Before it gets dark, cover plants to keep warm air in. When the temperature rises and the frost has melted in the morning, remove coverings. Under dense covers, heat from the sun can accumulate and cause plant death.

An incandescent light bulb produces enough heat to raise the temperature of the air around it just enough to keep a plant from freezing. For this method to operate, bulbs must be close to plants (within a distance of 2-3 feet). (Fluorescent bulbs can’t produce enough heat to complete this task.)

Set up hot caps
At planting time, stiff plastic containers with venting holes are placed over the individual seedlings. Hot caps function similarly to cloches (small greenhouses), but the daily task of applying and removing the covering is eliminated by venting holes. Use plastic two-liter bottles or gallon jugs with the bottoms cut off and the lids removed to simulate a hot cap (but saved). In the evenings when the weather turns chilly, replace the lids.
A Wall O’Water tepee, which encircles individual plants with a sleeve of water-filled tubes, is a variation on the hot cap concept. During the day, the water absorbs the heat of the sun. The water gently freezes at night, releasing the sun’s stored radiant heat and preventing the air within the tepee from becoming frosty.
Are hydrangeas often hardy?
Are hydrangeas a perennial plant? If not, how would you know which ones are or are not?
All hydrangeas are perennials that are either woody or herbaceous. Not all hydrangeas are winter resistant, and those that are cannot withstand the cold winters of Zone 5 that can reach -20 degrees, which is an issue for northern locations like Michigan. Those bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) with gorgeous pink and blue, big lacecaps seem to be what we crave. Except in particularly well-sited locations, they struggle in Zone 5. The plants become more widespread and productive as you move further south, into Zone 6 and beyond. These hydrangeas ought to be viewed as container plants in Zone 5 and brought indoors for the winter.
There is a climbing hydrangea (H. petiolaris) that can be utilized to conceal a huge structure or act as a shrub because it is winter-hardy in this area. It develops a white, fragrant blooming in late June that blooms for at least two weeks. The panicle hydrangea (H. paniculata) and oakleaf hydrangea are two more hydrangeas with a big shrub or spreading tree habit (H. quercifolia). My hydrangeas, will they grow back?
Remove up to one-third of the older living stems from the hydrangea each summer, cutting them all the way to the ground. The plant will recover as a result.
