Because of its milky white sap and African provenance, the euphorbia you purchased is presumably Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’ (also marketed as E. trigona rubra or E. trigona ‘Royal Red’). Its little green leaves and triangular, white-marbled green stems are a mutant of the usual variety. When exposed to strong sunlight, “Rubra” develops a crimson stem and red foliage. Even in summer when the plant is in excessive shadow, its coloring tends to fade in the winter. It turns crimson again when exposed to the sun.

Not just this euphorbia responds in that manner. Many other plants, particularly succulents (aloes, echeverias, crassulas, and rhipsalis, among others), turn reddish in direct sunlight because the red pigmentation, brought on by an accumulation of anthocyanins, serves as a sort of sunscreen, shielding the stems and leaves from the damaging effects of the sun, particularly its ultraviolet rays. The “sunscreen is not needed and goes away, leaving a green plant,” in decreased light.

Similar circumstances can be found in many non-succulents, with the exception that the tender new leaves in these plants are green at first, turning red as they mature and harden off.

It is obvious that your euphorbia does not receive enough sunlight to keep its reddish hue. It was probably grown in a greenhouse before you bought it, where it is simple to provide intense sunlight, but in the home, it really needs to be kept close to a sunny window at all times. The sun is much, much less intense in the winter, which is when this is most true. Additionally, plant it outdoors in full sunlight during the summer for even more dramatic colors.

In terms of watering, the African milk tree is quite tolerant of inconsistent watering, just as the majority of succulent euphorbias. Ideally, you should water generously, then let the growing medium completely dry before watering it again. You may need to water it weekly in the hot summer but just every two to three weeks in the cooler, shadier winter. The frequency of watering will vary depending on the climate and the season.

The Euphorbia cactus grows how quickly?

The heavier stems have a tendency to point in the direction of the light as they grow. To stop the container from leaning, rotate it.

The shedding of leaves is typical. In a few months, fresh leaves will emerge at the top of the stem.

I can get up to 30 feet tall in nature. I can grow quickly indoors in a container and reach a height of 5-8 feet. From the base, fresh, light-green shoots will emerge.

You may have overwatered if you notice rotting at the plant’s base or notice that the stems are no longer spongey. By removing the top treatment and allowing the soil to breathe, you might attempt to dry it out. If the stem is still too wet, you can cut it with a fresh corrugated knife and transplant it in fresh, drier soil.

Light

Online, you might find a lot of contradictory information. Some advise placing them outside where they will receive continuous, full-spectrum sunlight. Others claim that even if grown inside, this will burn and harm the plant and only withstand a little sun.

Both pieces of advise are partially true in our experience. So, this is what we would suggest.

Since these are succulents rather than genuine cactus, your plant won’t desire or appreciate the hot, beating sun. They need either strong light all day or some sunlight for an hour or two because they are well acclimated to heat and some sun because they are from Central Africa.

In the summer, you can also leave them outside as long as the spot you choose has at least some shade.

If your plant has been in a darker area for some time, you shouldn’t transfer it immediately into direct sunshine since you run the danger of scorching it. Move them into the sun for about an hour a day, then back into the shade again, gradually increasing the time in the sun, to acclimate them for about a week.

The Rubra type will easily alter its color depending on the amount of light. If it receives a lot of direct sunlight, it will turn a very dark maroon throughout; if there is not enough light, it will begin to turn a lighter green.

The light levels will be adjusted appropriately to cause the color shifts to alternate.

They do not function well at all in low light conditions. If you are unable to provide enough light for this plant, a grow light will be needed.

You’ll see little to no new growth if the amount of light being received is insufficient. Only one side of the plant will produce new leaves, and stems may curve upward in the direction of light sources rather than straight up.

If the light is only coming from one direction, even plants that are cultivated in good light conditions may have some of these problems. If this occurs, rotate the planter a quarter turn every two or three weeks for more reliable growth.

Watering

This plant struggles in some people’s care for two major reasons, one of which is that it’s frequently misidentified as a cactus. It may be assumed by new owners that it requires the least amount of water and the most amount of sunlight. Both claims are untrue.

It has leaves, whereas cacti don’t, which explains why. Additionally, compared to other cacti, which only have shallow roots, it has more and thicker rootstocks. Excessive drought will also be difficult for Euphorbia trigona.

Despite being regarded as a drought-tolerant plant, they are actually rather thirsty, consuming a lot of water and drying up quickly in warm weather. Re-water well once the top inch or so has totally dried out.

I usually water mine once or twice a week in late Spring and throughout the Summer; it’s probably a combination of having them in strong light and a warm area. In the winter, no more than once a week.

The stems may feel a little squishy to the touch when they are really dehydrated. If you feel the stems again after they have been thoroughly watered (approximately 5 hours later), they will feel plump and puffy.

If there is any dispute about whether your plant needs a top-up, wait a few more days to be careful because they are easily overwatered.

Humidity

These plants can tolerate almost any humidity found in a typical home as long as there is adequate air movement. If combined with overwatering, you may run into issues with excessive humid and stale rooms, but otherwise, you don’t need to give this a second thought.

Feeding

Even if it is not particularly hungry, if you can give it a well-balanced feed every few months when it is actively growing, it will still adore you. Use a regular houseplant feed or one made for cacti and succulents.

Temperature

They tolerate some cool temperatures but prefer warmer ones. Expect no growth and reduce watering if the temperature is too low to lower the possibility of root rot.

Although it is not a particularly resistant plant, it can endure temperatures that are close to freezing if necessary. However, continuous exposure will almost likely harm the plant.

Repotting

Young, tiny plants typically grow quickly and require repotting once a year until they reach maturity. You should be able to repot it once every two to three years at this stage.

Compared to the area the roots require, you’ll see a lot more visible development. In essence, this means that larger plants typically grow in relatively tiny containers.

There are two crucial purposes for the latex sap that will leak from cuts or other types of damage. When animals (and people) try to consume it, the bitterness and irritation will keep them away, whereas the toxicity and stickiness will keep insects away. Second, as the sap dries, a healing “scab” will form over the wound to help stop infection.

Wearing gloves will protect you from the thorns and any latex sap, which can easily harm the leaves and stems. If you severely cut your plant while handling it and it is still bleeding, you can stop the bleeding by putting the wounded area under a cold tap for a few minutes.

My plants seem to lose some of their natural support whenever I repot them, and the pot gets unsteady since the root ball can move around.

This may cause some concern, but after a few weeks, the soil will stabilize and the roots will return to their original positions.

What kind of soil does African Milk Tree Plants need?

These plants can be grown in a variety of growth media. The mix should essentially be a sort of well-draining soil. Regular potting compost or soil, sandy soil, and specific mixes designated for cacti and succulents are all acceptable.

Avoid using anything too compacted or heavy such as 100% topsoil as the roots do prefer some natural drainage. Additionally, keep in mind that they do enjoy water, so if the mix you’re using is too “open” and free-draining, you’ll need to water them much more regularly.

Propagation

It is difficult to grow new plants from seed, but it is simple to grow new plants from stem cuttings (for further information, see the “Flowers” section below).

Simply take off a stem that is somewhat new, ideally no older than two years. Since the stems will be very fleshy, you should probably use a knife or set of secateurs rather than scissors, which just won’t work (pun).

Before you begin, make sure your work space is covered and you have protected yourself and your eyes in case any of this gets in contact with your face or skin. There will be some substantial milky sap seeping out when you do this.

Since there won’t be anything to anchor the cutting in place and you don’t want it tumbling out of its new pot, you might need to support it with little sticks to keep it upright.

You can apply cold water to the bleeding borders until it stops. Place the cutting for at least a few days and up to a week in a dry, warm area. By doing this, the cut edge will have a chance to calluse over correctly and avoid rotting if it were to be placed into soggy ground.

Push the cutting a few centimeters or an inch into a soil mixture resembling that of the parent plant once the edge has dried out. New roots will soon start to establish if you keep the soil just moist and in comparable environmental conditions.

Speed of Growth

Expect your plant to develop in spurts; on particularly content plants, growth of up to a foot each year is feasible. You’ll see it quickly growing higher during specific times of the year. Then it will abruptly become inactive and remain motionless for months.

On the Rubra variety, it’s simple to spot when this is taking place since the new growth is frequently a lighter shade of green so it sticks out from the rest of the plant.

I’ve read observations and comments online that claim this is a “issue,” that it requires more bright sunshine, and that people should place it outside in the sun. This is untrue.

The “Royal Red” type of Euphorbia trigona will sprout new growth that is initially green. Usually, it will get darker with time.

By itself, new green growth without the red tones is not a clue that you need to add additional light. Consider this. If your plant wasn’t content with its surroundings, it wouldn’t have started to develop in the first place.

As the new growth hardens off, this unique shade of green will become darker over the season. Don’t just leave it outside in the hot sun; you can end up scorching it.

How big does the African Milk Plant get?

For a variety of reasons, most houseplants don’t grow very tall in a typical home, but Euphorbia Trigona is unique in that it is a vigorous grower and shoots vertically.

After around five or six years, if there is enough room and the planter is large enough, they can easily reach five feet or more.

By keeping your plant in a smaller container as it grows, you can keep it shorter and contained for an extended period of time.

To promote bushing or the formation of additional “arms,” you can also clip the main developing stem. Because you’re slicing it off, this will once more limit the height of your plant while increasing its density and width.

Flowers

No blooms here. One of the few plants in the world that is thought to have never bloomed. Because of this, it is believed that this is a hybrid in some way. No matter what, don’t anticipate any flowers on it any time soon.

Is the African Milk Tree safe around pets?

These plants will exert every effort to avoid being eaten or handled. They are not safe near pets or kids who play with or try to consume houseplants due to their natural defenses.

Even if your children and pets are well-behaved, you should still keep your plants away from busy intersections and places where a lot of people may walk by without paying attention. This is because they might unintentionally knock them down.

  • Spines / Thorns They are around 0.5 cm long and develop in pairs at regular intervals on the stems’ outer ridges.

Usually, they won’t catch you or scratch you too hard, but they will pierce your skin, which is rather uncomfortable.

The thorns are usually enough to stop most animals and children from playing with the plant further since they cover it. However, the plant has a second defensive tactic up its sleeve if they manage to get around this.

  • Earlyx Sap Due to the milk-like fluid that would leak from cuts or grazes, this plant is also known as the African MILK Tree.

This is typical of many Euphorbia species and is generally not regarded as lethal (an animal or person would need to consume enormous amounts first, which just doesn’t happen very often). If the white sap gets into your eyes or on your skin, it may irritate you.

How do you get the plant to become bushy and full?

If completely unattended, the primary stem will continue to grow, creating a single towering column. Although it may sporadically sprout side stems or “arms” on its own, this must generally be encouraged.

It is far more typical for owners to grow them with numerous “arms,” as this results in a houseplant that is more aesthetically pleasing and full-looking. Making this appearance is simple. All you have to do in the spring is cut the stem’s growing tip off. *** Although I’ve never experienced it myself, I’ve read that some people’s cuts into the stem can cause the sap to sputter out. When working with it, take care of your eyes ***.

Within a few weeks, a healthy plant will respond to this drastic pruning by sprouting new growth shoots at the cut edges.

I typically get two new stems to form in my experience, but I’ve seen particularly healthy plants produce three or more.

Even if you cut the stem at several times during the year, there could not be any new growth until the following spring.

Since it’s been said to be hit-or-miss, I haven’t personally tried it (I want results that are guaranteed!) However, you can also just “pick” or cut tiny pieces of the stems out by 1 cm / 0.5 in. This causes damage, from which new shoots might occasionally emerge.
