Do You Soak Sweet Pea Seeds

  • Sweet peas can be seeded in the fall in warmer places (Zone 7 and above) where the winters are generally not too harsh. Other than that, plant seeds in late winter or early spring. Before planting, give the seeds a 24-hour soak in water. By doing so, the seed coat is softer and the sprouting process is accelerated.
  • Fill your planting containers with high-quality potting soil while the seeds are soaking. Use the deepest pots you can find because sweet peas develop a lot of roots. Ideal containers are 4-inch (10-cm) pots and root trainers.
  • In each container, plant two seeds by pressing a fingertip into the soil and a half-inch (1.25 cm) deep.
  • To boost humidity and hasten germination, cover pots with a plastic dome covering. Place in a warm greenhouse or a house window with good light.
  • Pinch out the center growth tip, just above a leaf joint, once plants are 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) tall, leaving just two or three leaf nodes. The plant will be encouraged to branch out strongly from the base as a result.
  • Because they use a lot of food, sweet peas need a little more care to produce in large quantities. Apply bone meal, a thick layer of compost or well-rotted manure, and a generous amount of natural fertilizer to planting beds to prepare them. Incorporate these elements thoroughly into the soil.
  • Vines require a sturdy foundation to climb and grow quickly. Affix Hortonova netting or 6-foot (1.8 m) tall metal fence to the tall poles spaced approximately 8 feet (2.4 m) apart down the row for them to climb.
  • Around the time of the final spring frost, plant seedlings outdoors in two rows, one on either side of the trellis, spaced approximately 8 inches (20 cm) apart down the row. It’s crucial to keep the vines bound to their supports as they erupt into lush growth. Sweet peas can grow more than a foot (30.5 cm) per week once the vines begin going.
  • Sweet peas adore water, and they can’t survive without regular watering. Set up soaker hoses as soon as you plant them to prevent their luxuriant development from being restrained. It’s important to maintain their thirst quenched during warm weather. Use diluted fish and seaweed emulsion to feed plants once a week.
  • Pick flowers when there are at least two unopened blooms remaining on the stem for the greatest vase life. To extend the life of the vase, add flower food to the water. It’s crucial to prevent plants from going to seed in order to prolong blooming, so be sure to regularly harvest and deadhead the flowers.

Is it necessary to soak pea seeds before planting?

Everyone is contemplating the gardens. We’ve been working hard at my Bedford, New York farm, where we’ve potted up hundreds of new bare root tree cuttings, prepared and planted the flower garden, and sown one of our first vegetable garden crops: peas!

Pea plants may even withstand light frosts as young plants, and they do best in cooler climates. Peas should be planted as soon as possible in the spring to ensure a complete crop before the sweltering summer months. The food garden’s pea trellis is lined with many varieties of shelling peas and delicious pods that my head gardener, Ryan McCallister, first bathed in water to hasten germination.

Peas come in a wide range of kinds, however they may all be categorized as edible pods or shelling peas. Before eating, shelling peas must be separated from their pods. Snap pea and snow pea pods are examples of edible pods since they can be consumed whole.

A three-inch pod of the tasty early pea type known as “Premium” often contains seven to eight medium-sized, extremely sweet peas.

For a mid-season variety, “Sienna” peas have a rich flavor. The pods have a length of around three and a half inches and contain seven to eight peas.

Peas with the name “Royal Snow” feature big pods and a mildly bitter taste. They make a delicious addition to salads and coleslaw. When overdone, their hue remains purple but changes to murky.

‘Avalanche’ peas are delicate, sweet, six-inch edible pods that give salads and stir fries a rich flavor and depth.

The early edible pod pea variety “Sugar Ann Og” is perfect for tiny gardens. It yields around ten days earlier than other snap peas and has short, bushy vines that don’t require support.

A nearly stringless variation is called “Sugar Sprint.” These peas are among the earliest maturing varieties and are perfect for eating either fresh or frozen.

Whether it’s raw, steamed, or stir-fried, the “Super Sugar Snap” is delectable. The plant yields thick, large, and incredibly sweet snaps.

The legume family includes shelling, snow, and snap peas. Chinese pea pods are another name for snow peas. They are flat, contain tiny peas within, and the entire pod can be eaten. The whole pod of snap peas, which have a crunchy texture and an intensely sweet flavor, is consumed. They are a hybrid between snow peas and shelling peas.

Garden peas, sweet peas, and English peas are other names for shelling peas. The spherical peas inside the hard, rounded pods must be plucked or shelled before consumption. The sweet peas can be consumed either raw or cooked.

Some Pisum sativum (pea) seeds will have wrinkled appearances. Since the majority of them have tough coats, soaking them altogether before planting is beneficial. Put them in warm water overnight to soak. Germination will proceed more quickly as a result. The peas are well covered and each variety placed in a separate plastic container that is half full with water.

Seeds should only be soaked for eight to twelve hours, and no more than twenty-four. They might deteriorate if you soak them for too long. When taking out the peas, throw away any that have risen to the surface of the water; they are not healthy enough to be planted.

Drain them completely and take out any broken or fragmented seeds using a strainer.

The pea is one of the earliest vegetables that have been grown in cultivation. Peas were discovered in Swiss archeological digs from the Bronze Age. Peas were a favorite dish of the ancient Greeks and Romans as well.

Peas are well known for helping to fix the nitrogen concentration in the soil, but they require an inoculant to do this. A nitrogen-fixing bacterium called Rhizobium leguminosarum is frequently fed to the soil where peas and lima beans are grown.

Do not be concerned about the amount of inoculant added to the peas because it is impossible to over-inoculate.

Toss the peas once the inoculant has been introduced to make sure they are evenly coated. The pea plants will benefit from the inoculant.

Here in the vegetable garden is our lengthy pea trellis. One of the first crops we plant outside at the start of the year is peas.

Ryan generously water the newly planted peas. Once a week, give the soil a good soaking and never let it dry out. As a result, pea output is dramatically reduced and the plants are stressed.

When it’s time to harvest, large signs make it obvious which pea kinds are shelling, snapping, and snow. Mid-June to early July is when the peas should be ready for harvest.

What kinds of seeds need to be soaked before planting?

Gardening is frequently quite forgiving. If nature didn’t have that beautiful little knack for figuring out how to survive, the plants we see all around us wouldn’t be here. In spite of this, humans frequently try to coerce plants from other lands to flourish in environments that don’t have the right climate or growing circumstances for them. Since that is so frequently the case, soaking your seeds is a fantastic approach to give them a head start.

Allowing nature to run its course is the most natural way to germinate seeds. Nature scatters seeds on the ground for creatures to consume and excrete, or she lets the elements wet the seeds to begin the germination process. This is how people discover “volunteers” from a previous crop in their garden.

You won’t want to leave it to chance, though, if you’re eager to cultivate a particular hot pepper kind or are simply attempting to develop a unique variety of flower. Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of seeds are produced by plants in the event that only a few would survive, develop into adults, and procreate. Those aren’t the odds you’ll be content with after taking the trouble to buy seeds or obtain them from a buddy.

Generally speaking, your seeds will sprout even if you don’t soak them before planting, however soaking shortens the germination period and speeds up germination. A constant supply of moisture that seeds can absorb greatly increases their chances of success. Soaking your seeds can make all the difference to getting the most out of your garden, especially if you’re on a schedule or the environment only provides you a small window of opportunity to flourish.

What’s Happening When You Soak Seeds?

Baby plant components enclosed in a seed coat make up seeds. Although a monocot seed and a dicot seed have distinct interiors, both have a seed coat that serves to safeguard the young plant until it is ready to sprout. They contain sustenance for the first growth as well as the components that will sprout and turn into the plant’s first leaves and stem. One of the seed’s natural protections against the harsh forces of nature is its seed coat. When the conditions are not ideal, it stops the seed from sprouting. By soaking the seed, you are indicating to the seed that the timing is correct for it to bud and start growing into a plant.

Consider a sweet pea as an illustration. Early season crops include sweet peas. They produce beautiful blossoms that beg pollinators to fertilise them with their exquisite aroma. They produce seed pods after blooming that resemble other pea pods but are slightly furrier. They continue to grow on the vine until they eventually dry out. The plant can generate up to about a thousand seeds per pod, each of which can contain ten or more seeds. These seeds then experience a dry or wet hot summer, a fall, and a winter. Until the seed detects that the environment is cool enough and moist enough for the plant to live a full life and reproduce, those seeds need to be prevented from germinating.

Gardeners’ prized sweet pea seeds won’t be subjected to the natural forces that would eventually wear down the seed coat if they are carefully found and brought inside for storage. It might be ingested, trampled underfoot by animals, or wedged between rocks. When it’s time to start the growth process in late fall or early winter, a gardener would soak the seeds after nicking the seed coat and soaking for 24 hours. When and where the gardener wants the seed to grow are determined by this procedure, which simulates what the seed would experience in nature. This procedure is known as scarification of seeds.

What Type Of Seeds Need A Presoak?

Not all seeds can be soaked easily. Particularly little seeds can clump together in water and be quite difficult to work with afterwards. The germination process can be accelerated by soaking larger seeds with thick seed coats. After soaking, seeds with wrinkles, such as peas, perform very well. Those seeds will swell up in the water and become suitable for direct sowing.

Peas, beans, pumpkins and other winter squash, chard, beets, sunflower, lupine, fava beans, and cucumbers are just a few of the seeds that enjoy soaking. The majority of other thick-coated medium- to large vegetable and floral seeds benefit from soaking.

What Types of Pre Soaked Seeds Can Be Direct Sown?

Many larger seeds can be put directly into your garden after soaking for 12 to 24 hours. This has the advantage that direct sowing is preferable for seeds. When seedlings are transplanted, their growth is somewhat stunted and their roots are prevented from growing to the depth they would have otherwise. Direct sowing should be used whenever possible, even though it may not be a choice for everyone, especially for those growing in areas with limited land or in places that experience cold.

Can sweet pea seeds be planted directly in the ground?

Sweet pea seeds should be directly put into the garden in the fall from September through November in mild winter settings where the ground does not freeze in order to develop robust root systems and blossom in the spring. If you are unable to plant your seeds in the fall, start as soon as spring arrives in a well-drained area that provides some afternoon shade.

In regions with difficult winters, plant about a month before the last date of frost after the worst of the weather has passed. If spring arrives early in your region and becomes hot and muggy, mulch seedlings well and place them where vines will have some afternoon shade.

1. Before planting, you could decide to nick your sweet pea seeds. The seed’s outer layer can be broken off by giving it a quick cut with a nail clipper so it can quickly absorb water. This will result in a higher percentage of your seeds germinating and a few days earlier sprouting.

This is how: Between your thumb and forefinger, hold a seed. Clip your seed by holding the clippers at an angle with the other hand so that you can only utilize the tip of the blade. Not taking a chunk out of the seed is your goal; it is to slice through the brown top layer of the seed. Sometimes the nick you caused is barely visible, and other times a bit of the seed coat cracks off revealing the interior seed’s lighter color. Both are true.

2. Since sweet peas require fertile, well-drained soil, add some aged manure or other finished compost to your garden bed before planting. Work the material into the soil and rake the bed to level it out. Make a furrow with a stick or a tool. Make sure your furrow is 1 inch deep since it’s crucial to plant seeds at the correct depth (for sweet peas, this is 1 inch).

3. When planting your seeds, space them 2-3 inches apart in your furrow. You have a better chance of getting a full bed of plants with no gaps if you sow your sweet peas at this spacing. You will thin your seeds later, when they have grown, to the desired spacing.

4. After sowing, fill in your furrow with earth to cover the seeds. You should only transfer enough soil to fill in the trench without building up a mound above the seeds since you want your seeds to be positioned one depth down.

5. Lightly mist the seeds you covered. To stop the water from washing away the soil, use a watering can or hose with an attachment that diffuses the water so that it showers gently like rain.

Tall sweet peas require a sturdy support in order to ascend. Build one now so that it is there when your seedlings are prepared to begin climbing.

6. You must keep birds, snails, and slugs away from your sweet pea seedlings. In order to prevent these typical predators from discovering your sprouts and eating them before you even realize they are up, you should do this as soon as possible after sowing your seed.

Use netting for birds. Using flexible, black plastic irrigation tubing, often known as polytube and sold at most garden centers, we create our own support hoops. It should be cut into lengths that correspond to the width of your garden beds. To create arches over your sweet pea bed, bury the ends of the cut tubing in the ground. These arches should be covered with bird netting, which should be secured at all edges to prevent openings. Before your sweet peas grow large enough to attach themselves to the netting, remove it.

7. If you started your seeds indoors, the seedlings must be hardened off before being transplanted into your garden. Hardening off is the process of gradually exposing your plants to the elements they will experience outside, with temperature and direct sunlight being the most important factors. If you don’t, your seedlings can have transplant shock once they are planted in the garden.

When your plants have around 3–4 pairs of leaves, you can begin the hardening off procedure. Place your plants outside where they will receive morning sun in full force and afternoon shade. If you don’t have access to such a place, you will need to relocate your plants every day so that they are in the morning sun and out of the afternoon sun. Move them to a location where they will receive direct sun all day after about 3–4 days. You can move them into your garden in a few more days.

8. We advise deadheading to prolong the blooming period of your sweet pea plants. This entails removing wasted flowers before they have an opportunity to use their energy to produce seeds rather than other blossoms. Deadheading is best done right when the bloom has peaked and is just starting to fade. Cut the entire flower stem off at all times.

9. The blossoming on this plant is completely through. When you can see, the plants begin to slow down and eventually stop flowering altogether as the discarded blooms turn into seedpods. Whether you deadhead or not, all sweet pea plants eventually reach the end of their flowering season. However, you can extend the bloom time by removing spent blossoms.

10. The flowers are, of all, the whole idea of cultivating sweet peas. Remember to cut some and bring them inside; they make lovely, sweet-smelling bouquets. Additionally, the plant will produce more blossoms the more you cut!
