Ideally, pre-wash clothing in HOT water with Kieralon or Prof. Textile Detergent to get rid of any oils, grime, or other substances that might make the dye less effective. Put on your gloves and dust mask! For every gallon of warm water, use 1 cup (8 oz) of soda ash fixer. A gallon will soak 10 to 12 adult XL t-shirts, therefore there will be a lot more kids’ t-shirts and less gowns, etc.

Verify the names of all the colors on the jar’s label; those that require more dye are indicated by a * or ** next to their names.

Use as many different colors of dye to apply with squeeze bottles, paint brushes, sponges, etc. (Tips can be found below.)

Place the knotted material in a plastic bag (you want to keep it damp). For the brightest colors, allow it to cure for at least four hours but preferably twenty-four. It takes longer at lower temperatures, below 70 °F.

Prepare your washing machine by adding 1/4 cup of Professional Textile Detergent or Kieralon to hot water. Before placing the tie-dyes in the machine, give them a good rinse. To stop the dye process, rinse with ties still attached under cold running water (from a faucet, hose, or shower). As you untie the folds, rinse with warm water and continue until the water is mostly clear. As soon as it has been rinsed, put it in the washing machine and run a full cycle. Washing more than around 8 adult-size t-shirts at once will cause the water to get too muddy. To make your tie-dyes incredibly soft, add Milsoft professional fabric softener in the final rinse.

  • Any natural material, such as cotton, rayon, hemp, linen, ramie, etc., works well for tie-dying. Avoid 50/50 blends, but if you can’t find 100% natural clothes, a shirt made of 90% cotton and 10% polyester or lycra is acceptable (come out very pale).
  • You cannot get a genuine black when tie-dying silk, wool, or other protein fibers because Fiber Reactive colors change on these fibers. Use half as much soda ash, cure for no longer than 4-6 hours, or use the vinegar/microwave procedure instead of soda ash because it is also very harsh on these materials.
  • Pre-washing your fabric and clothing is always a good idea because fabric softeners, oils, and other finishes can stop the dye from penetrating the fibres.
  • To absorb additional dye, cover your work surfaces with folded paper towels or old newspapers. It’s also a good idea to elevate the garment off the table; for this, we like to use an old cookie cooling rack. Because dye stains, make sure to wear old clothes!
  • Make sure the dye is applied to everything. Flip the garment over and continue the process after applying dye to one side. To get the best dye penetration and less white on the finished product, inject the squeeze bottle’s tip into the folds.
  • To inhibit the dye’s spread and produce sharper edges, add a small amount of Sodium Alginate thickening or Super Clear liquid thickener to the dye mixture (step 3).
  • A Squirt bottle that leaks? This issue is easily fixed by wrapping some white Teflon plumber’s tape around the threads. Any hardware shop will have it for a reasonable price. It ought to be included in every tie-dyer!
  • It is acceptable to keep the fabric moist in step 4 without using a plastic bag; for example, many people cover with plastic drop cloths or wrap their fabrics in plastic wrap. The chemical reaction happens more quickly the warmer the area is where you spread out your tie-dyes to cure.

What to Dye

Prepping Items to Dye

It is advised to wash anything you intend to color first with only a small amount of detergent (no fabric softener nor dryer sheet). If the fabric is new, this shrinks it to fit and gets rid of any potential residue. If you neglect this stage, your dye will still turn out fine, but a little less vividly.

The only additional step in preparation for Tulip One-Step Tie Dye is to submerge the item(s) in water and ring out the excess water.

Which Type of Dye to Use

I can’t recommend Tulip Brand’s One-Step Tie Dye enough if you’re looking for the simplest and most varied alternative. It comes with everything you need (outside of water and items to dye), so you can go crazy tie dying up to 36 projects with a true rainbow of different colors.

The “one-step” in the kit names alludes to the skipped step of soaking the fabric in a solution of water and soda ash prior to dyeing, which is what makes the dye so simple to use. Simply mix some water into the neat squeeze bottles of dry color powder before dying to your heart’s content!

Follow the instructions on the dye package carefully if you intend to tie dye using fabric dyes other than Tulip’s One-Step dyes as there may be additional processes involving soaking the cloth in water, liquid dish detergent, soda ash, and salt. To achieve the greatest dyeing and coloring effects, make careful to adhere to the dye’s package directions.

NOTE IMPORTANT: Dye only retains its effectiveness for 48–72 hours. To prevent wasting valuable dye, I advise activating only the colors and quantities you intend to use during a given session.

Prepping Your Space for Dyeing

The process of dying is messy. Make sure you are wearing gloves, a tablecloth is covering your workspace, and you are wearing an apron or smock before you contact the dye. Before dying the thing, place it on a piece of paper towel that is just a little bit larger than the item. The paper towel will absorb any extra colour and stop it from pooling underneath your design and getting into places you don’t want it to.

Choosing Colors

Placing colors adjacent to one another that blend well together is a smart idea since colors that are put next to one another will inevitably bleed together where they meet. Yellow adjacent to red will produce a small amount of orange, while pink next to blue can create a hint of purple. Purple next to yellow, on the other hand, will result in undesirable reddish splotches. Simply put, stay away from pairing complementary hues together. Soak

Each item should be washed separately or alongside other things dyed the same color(s) in the washing machine. Set the water temperature to warm, the load to usual, and a modest amount of detergent. (Note: Although using cold water may leave some leftover dye, some people like it to increase color intensity. You have a choice!)

Only the objects that you also washed together should be dried together without the use of dryer sheets. If you have a tennis ball, you can put it in the dryer with the item to guarantee it dries completely because single objects sometimes adhere to the dryer’s wall. For the next wash or two, wash each of your creations separately to avoid staining other objects with leftover dye.

How to Care for Your Tie Dye
