Abstract:
There are a few aromatic cultivars, despite the fact that the appeal of tulips is in their range of colors and shapes.
You can detect a variety of aromas, including citrus-like, honey-like, and green-like ones when you sniff tulips properly.
By using GC-MS analysis, about 183 smell components, including terpenoids, benzenoids, and fatty acid derivatives, were discovered.
Four sesquiterpenoids (caryophyllene, a-farnesene, geranyl acetone, and b-ionone) and six benzenoids (acetophenone, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, 3,5-dimethoxytoluene, and 2-phenylethanol) as well as five fatty acid derivatives made up the majority of the scent compounds (decanal, 2-hexenal, cis-3-hexenol, cis-3-hexenyl acetate, and octanal). According to the composition of the main scent components and sensory evaluation of a living flower, tulip cultivars were divided into nine groups: group 1, anise (7 cultivars, such as Candy Prince); group 2, citrus (21 cultivars, such as Advance); group 3, fruity (14 cultivars, such as Sane); group 4, green (16 cultivars, such as Cum Laude); group 5, herbal (16 cultivars, such as Davenport); group 6, herbal-honey (1 cultivar (2 cultivars, e.g. Queen of night). Tulips’ wide variety of flowery scents are attributed as the cause.
What scent do tulips have?
According to their odor profiles, all tulips can be grouped into 9 major categories because the proportion of their amounts may differ greatly between tulip species.
The Anisic group of flowers comprises those that are aromatic, spicy, and sweet, including anise and star anise (Illicium).
