There are a few aromatic cultivars, despite the fact that the appeal of tulips is in their range of colors and shapes.

By using GC-MS analysis, about 183 smell components, including terpenoids, benzenoids, and fatty acid derivatives, were discovered.

According to the composition of the main scent components and sensory evaluation of a living flower, tulip cultivars were divided into nine groups: group 1, anise (7 cultivars, such as Candy Prince); group 2, citrus (21 cultivars, such as Advance); group 3, fruity (14 cultivars, such as Sane); group 4, green (16 cultivars, such as Cum Laude); group 5, herbal (16 cultivars, such as Davenport); group 6, herbal-honey (1 cultivar (2 cultivars, e.g. Queen of night). Tulips’ wide variety of flowery scents are attributed as the cause.
