There are many pests that attack garden crops, but few are as destructive and non-selective as slugs. Slugs have a fairly wide diet that includes anything from hostas to asters, unlike many insect pests and plant illnesses. Hostas are one of their favorite plants. Even though we detest slugs for the harm they cause to our garden plants, we must acknowledge their significance to ecosystems because many species are decomposers that eat dead worms, insects, and leaves. In addition, birds, toads, turtles, and snakes all eat them.
Slugs are simple to recognize but occasionally difficult to locate. Without their protective shells, they are essentially snails. Slugs vary in length from less than an inch to 10 inches, depending on the species, such the West Coast-native banana slug. The gray garden slug is one of the most prevalent slug species in gardens in Iowa. Their plump, slimy bodies range in color from light gray to brownish black and are normally less than one inch long.
Adult slug species often spend the winter. Eggs are placed in damp regions close to the soil surface in the spring or early summer, such as behind dead leaves, rocks, mulch, or flower pots. When there is enough moisture present, baby slugs hatch and start feeding right away. Although they are smaller and lighter gray in color, they resemble adults.
Slugs feed at night when we can’t see them because they are nocturnal. During the day, they like cool, dark, moist hiding spots. Slugs thrive in the cool, rainy spring weather, which causes early, severe plant damage. The entire season, they make hostas ugly by destroying young seedlings and eating holes in the leaf. Unfortunately, they do not pass away during the hottest and driest parts of the summer. Slugs burrow down into the ground or locate a wet, secure area where they remain motionless. When there is enough rain or moisture to dissolve the mucous and allow the water to permeate into their bodies, they secrete a mucus-like cocoon around themselves and wait it out. During a dry spell, they may lose up to 50% of their body weight, but they may quickly restore it all by rehydrating within two hours. Due to increased populations and regenerated soil moisture levels, slug damage is frequently just as severe in the late summer as it is in the spring.
As they crawl through plants and flat surfaces, slugs create a slimy mucus trail. This keeps them from drying out and gives them a cushioned surface to slide over when encountering sharp edges. It appears like a silvery trail on the foliage.
Control by culture.
Reducing the ideal settings where slugs can live and reproduce is one strategy. Open up the garden to enable more sun and air circulation so that the soil isn’t damp for extended periods of time. This is important since they need moist soil in which to deposit their eggs and cool, moist, protected areas in which to hide during the day. Keep mulch layers thin; a uniform, one-inch layer will stop the area surrounding the plants from drying out too quickly and won’t trap too much moisture in the soil. In areas where slugs are a problem, avoid mulching with new grass clippings and rake leaves out of the garden beds in the fall because slugs also feed on decomposing plant matter.
Beer is frequently used to catch slugs since it attracts them as well. A beer trap consists of a shallow container, such a yogurt cup, that has been filled with beer and buried up to the rim. It will appeal to slugs, who will crawl in and drown. To provide shade and keep rain from diluting the beer, you might want to cover the beer trap with a loose cloth.
Some gardeners find great satisfaction in chasing slugs in the early morning, dousing them with salt, and then seeing them shrivel up as the salt draws the water out of their bodies. This pretty cruel approach of control is neither efficient nor effective.
chemical management. Slugs are managed with molluscicides that are used as bait rather than insecticides because they are not insects. When slugs are active, in the spring or fall, use slug baits. To encourage slug activity, it is a good idea to irrigate before putting a bait, and to apply it in the late afternoon or evening. Metaldehyde is present in many baits. Despite being efficient, it is not without flaws. It must be often reapplied because sunshine and water quickly deactivate it. It can be hazardous to pets who consume it and cannot be used in vegetable gardens. There are substitute baits on the market with iron phosphate (ferric phosphate) as the main component. Sluggo, Escar-Go, Schultz Slug and Snail Bait, among other trade names, are examples. Iron phosphate baits have a few benefits even if some experts believe they are a little less successful than baits made of metaldehyde. They can be applied around food crops, they don’t endanger pets, birds, or other non-target species, and they can be used more efficiently in high moisture conditions because iron phosphate doesn’t readily dissolve in water.
What is consuming the zinnia blossoms I have?
It is not advised to use insecticides other than insecticidal soap to combat harmful mite and insect pests because zinnias are important sources of pollen and nectar for many beneficial insects. In order to reduce insect and disease issues, good culture (soil preparation, fertilizers, irrigation, mulch, optimal plant spacing, and sufficient sunlight) is preferable to solely relying on pesticides.
Although aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies rarely harm zinnia plants, they can be destructive in hot, dry conditions. The plants can be hosed down with a strong stream of water to remove aphids and spider mites. Due to the fact that spider mites prefer hot, dry conditions, decreasing drought stress with additional watering will aid in preventing an infestation. Spider mites, aphids, and whiteflies can be eradicated by spraying insecticidal soap, however blooming plants should only be sprayed in the late evening to protect hummingbirds and helpful insects. Sprays made of insecticidal soap must be applied to the lower leaf surfaces, where a lot of pests eat. Examples of insecticidal soap products are shown in Table 1. How can I keep slugs from consuming my plants?
Many gardeners’ life are made miserable by slugs and snails. They devour vegetal stuff without mercy or discrimination. If given even the slightest chance, they can devour a perfectly healthy plant in a matter of days.
When you first realize how vicious these blubbery little creatures are, it might be discouraging for a beginning gardener. It can also be simple to feel like you’ve failed at gardening if you lose a few leaves to some greedy new neighbors.
But do not lose hope! Slugs won’t bother everyone, but if you do find yourself the victim of their wandering nibbling, there are several things we may do to keep them away. The good news is that they are less likely to locate your plants if you have a balcony, an enclosed garden, or a high-up terrace, and they are simpler to fend off if you do. However, if you ever have to fight them, use some of these tried-and-true methods:
1) Mulch, gravel, or woodchips that have been crushed Because molluscs dislike walking on uneven terrain, you can use this texture to discourage them if they notice any sharp edges.
2) Ground coffee. The bitter flavor of coffee grinds repels slugs. To keep them away, scatter coffee grounds on the soil surrounding your plants. (However, if you have any roving four-legged family members, this might not work because coffee grounds are bad for pets.)
2) Copper tape or copper pots Slugs are effectively repelled by doing this. Although it won’t result in their disappearance from your yard, if you can sufficiently wrap copper tape over the base of your pots, it will result in fewer or no slugs making the difficult climb up the side of the container to their smorgasbord above. Slugs dislike copper because when they slime their way onto it, it electrocutes them somewhat. What do they then do? They turn around and slime off it. Issue is resolved.
5) Create an eel lure Slugs will be attracted to the environment if a buffet bar is set up there. A Tupperware containing beer or vegetables could serve as the lure. They will be less likely to concentrate on your plants if you can entice them to this location, and it will also be quite simple to pick them up and get rid of them. (You might want to do this while wearing your rubber gloves.)
6) Pellets of slugs. These are the big weapons, and even though we would prefer not to use them, they do function in a pinch. Choose a brand of slug pellets that is safe for people, pets, and other wildlife if you intend to use them. (If it is non-toxic to pets, wildlife, and humans, it will say so on the tin, and we wouldn’t recommend buying them if it isn’t.)
You can thus attempt a variety of strategies. But keep in mind these crucial details as well:
You can move them by picking them up. This is a very quick and effective way to get rid of them! Pick them up and transfer them out of your garden whenever you see them. They’re slimy little critters, so it’s not the most pleasant job. It won’t stop them from returning or from getting new ones, but it will immediately end any sluggish party.
Be very cautious following rainy weather. You’re more likely to observe slugs and snails after it has been raining or even during a deluge like the one we got today because they prefer damp environments. So
Learn about your garden. There will be areas of your balcony or garden that have a higher propensity to serve as a home for slugs and snails. Some gardens have more slugs and snails than others. Pay attention to these regions and concentrate your efforts there when it comes time to remove molluscs after rainy weather.
NEVER sprinkle salt on them. Salt basically kills them in a painful way by causing them to erupt. We do not advocate salt at all because it is not only an inhumane and painful method of animal euthanasia but also very harmful to plants.
Slugs can be persistent, but beware. You need to be just as strong to defeat them.
What causes zinnia holes to eat?
Your Zinnia leaves may become “eaten” by bacterial or fungal leaf spot infections. A common pest of zinnias that consumes the leaves are aphids. Your zinnia leaves may become damaged by caterpillars like Leafrollers, Cabbage Looper Larvae, Army Worms, and Cutworms.

How can I keep slugs from consuming my zinnia?

Zinnias from the “Zahara” series are less problematic than most zinnias.
A: This year, my zinnias are really dying off. I think there’s a bug. Sevin dust has made some difference. A number of the plants are wilting and becoming brown, and several of the leaves have holes in them. In a different part of the yard, I’ve grown zinnias before, and I didn’t have this problem.
A: Powdery mildew, the most prevalent issue that causes zinnias’ leaves to first become whitish and then brown, can also be a concern for these flowers.
The Japanese beetles or a few other smaller bugs that occasionally consume zinnia leaves may be to blame for the holes. But none of those would generally result in the browning and death of entire plants.
Another bug that attacks zinnias is the leafhopper, which not only leaves spots on the foliage but also spreads a disease that can destroy the plants. So, the leading likelihood in this case is that.
Smaller insects like aphids and mites damage leaves more by bending and/or mottling them rather than chewing holes in them.
It’s also possible that you have dual issues, such as leafhoppers or beetles that are causing the holes plus a disease that is turning the leaves brown.
I would start by carefully examining the plants to see if you notice any bugs or indications of bugs, such as tiny bugs that jump up off the plants when you move the leaves or sticky “honeydew” (waste) on the stems (aphids) (leafhoppers).
Most bugs are killed by sevin. Although you might need to spray insecticidal soap (an “organic” option) multiple times and strike the bugs with it to get rid of an infestation, it works reasonably well against a variety of bugs.
A fungicide spray would be the solution to mildew if there are no visible bugs and the leaves are just turning from white to brown. The majority of fungicides you’ll find in garden centers have mildew control included on their labels.
I hardly ever spray anything in my garden. I work to minimize stress on my plants, and when issues arise, I rely on natural predators to take care of them. In order to reduce stress, plants must be grown with proper soil, the appropriate amount of sun exposure, and watering during hot, dry weather, especially while they are young.
Plants that don’t survive in those conditions are later removed from my yard. At the very least, I’ll try a different variety.
For instance, zinnias thrive in full light and soil that has been composted. However, because the majority of the older types are so susceptible to mildew (and occasionally bugs), I like to stay primarily with the two new, compact zinnia series, “Profusion” and “Zahara.” I’ve found both of these to be mostly trouble-free, and they both come in a number of colors.
