Animals including skunks, rats, mice, moles, and squirrels have been known to dig up the bulbs in flower beds. Despite the fact that it is a common belief, there is no evidence that any animal will consume a daffodil bulb. Skunks have been known to burrow through contaminated bulbs in order to obtain grub.

Oh, dear. Timmie, a thirteen-year-old LaMancha who is always well-behaved, had walked past her usual snack of salal and Oregon grape leaves. Looking at the edge of my yard as I ran a quick errand to the house, I noticed recent bite marks and missing leaf portions on a rhododendron. I was aware that I couldn’t ignore this.
Within minutes of her illegal salad ingestion, I grabbed my cayenne and DTox and got to work. We had her back up to normal speed in less than a day without any further symptoms, other than being somewhat more tired/sleepy than usual for the next 24 hours. Yes, the barnyard will be enclosed by fencing this spring. Even though I was completely at blame for the situation for believing a goat would stay out of them, Timmie is currently under barn arrest.
We cannot locate a “a comprehensive list of plants that are hazardous or poisonous to goats, most of which are either generic for all livestock or targeted for certain animals. This meticulously compiled list from Cornell University was contributed by reader Kristen Fife. I’ll only mention a few things to watch out for. You can get a list of more troublesome plants frequently found in your area from your neighborhood veterinarian, county extension office, state or local jurisdiction veterinary college, and your local government.
It need education to understand what to feed goats. If goats consume too much of any plant they are unfamiliar with, even healthy plants can become dangerously toxic and cause enterotoxemia. I avoid issues by checking all of the hay for unidentified or well-known problem plants, waiting 10 days before switching feeds, and gradually introducing new ones. To lessen the chance that my greedy goats will consume something, I also make sure they are adequately fed in their paddock in the morning before letting them out in the field. Additionally, I avoid feeding friends’ or neighbors’ brush since it is too simple for unpleasant plants to be mixed in.
Normally, mushrooms are only consumed when they are combined with freshly cut grass from weeding or mowing. To avoid the hepatocidal (liver death) effects of mold and mushrooms, do your goats a favor and compost the clippings rather than feeding them.
Yew is a lovely coniferous little tree with green needles that is native to America and is used frequently in landscaping. You won’t find needles on our farm because just one bite can instantly or temporarily stop a heart. Watch out when seeing livestock displays because this plant may be present in or close to barns.
Both water hemlock and poison hemlock are very hazardous plants. Even young children have died while using the stem to make straws. This plant is dangerous in all forms, including dried and fresh components. The poison hemlock favors damp environments and can appear singly or in big groups. It can grow up to four feet tall in a garden bed. This plant, which resembles parsley and has white umbel-shaped flowers, blooms in the spring and has a smooth, vascular (open like a straw) stem that is streaked, filled, or covered in purple. I periodically notice one or two plants sprouting in my flowerbed or garden, and I’ve had it lining pastures. When removing this plant, always use rubber gloves and avoid breathing the volatile oils. If you pull it and notice a musty, musty smell, stop. By paralyzing the neurological system, poison hemlock prevents the heart, lungs, and brain from communicating with each other. Avoid conflating this plant with Queen Anne’s Lace or wild carrot, two essential therapeutic herbs. The stems of that plant are firm, slender, and densely haired, with no purple coloring. It grows in the summer and prefers arid locations. Examining the inflorescence will allow you to identify this plant with certainty (flowers). There will be white flowers all around a red blossom in the center.
Popular evergreen, spring-blooming landscape shrubs that are native to the Northwest include rhododendrons and azaleas. They are extremely deadly plants for goats and can grow to be up to a cabin’s height. Arrhythmia, decreased blood pressure, nausea, and vomiting are all brought on by the leaves, blossoms, and honey derived from pollen. It doesn’t take much, but I’m not sure of the dosage “Rhody departs to slaughter a goat. Additionally, they will suffer if you are unable to flip them around. This is another shrub to fence off from stray goats since they are drawn to the glossy foliage. A friend of mine lost many goats the previous year after they wandered over to a neighbor’s property and destroyed a number of plants. She worked hard to save many more as well.
Goats are poisoned by a variety of flowers and landscape plants. Boxwood, cotoneaster, all varieties of laurels, oleander, numerous varieties of lupines (bluebonnets), larkspur, delphinium, daffodils, and narcissus are a few of them.
It can be hazardous to eat a lot of green leaves, acorns, or blooms from black, red, or yellow oak trees. They contain a lot of tannins and can harm the liver and kidneys, which can be fatal. When oak leaves accumulate in stock waters, enough tannins can drain and result in the same issues. The only issue I ever had with my well-fed goats eating white oak acorns and fall leaves was that it decreased their milk supply because white oak still contains tannin, but not as much as the other varieties. They couldn’t get the white oaks’ green leaves, which was another issue. After their morning feeding and milking, roughly thirty goats were fighting for a few discarded leaves. Of course, I wouldn’t have allowed them to consume all of those.
Hemolytic Anemia, a disorder that results in the breakdown of red blood cells in the bloodstream, can be brought on by dried or wilted maple leaves of any variety. Red maples are the worst offenders because of how many leaves they can drop in a single day, but many other varieties of maples have also contributed to issues under the correct circumstances. When we first arrived here, we cut down a huge old red maple from our meadow. It made beautiful firewood, and we use a piece of the base as a climbing structure in our goat pen.
Plants of the prunus species have cyanogenic leaves in any stage of wilt. This issue typically affects goats when leaves from a pit fruit plant fall into their pen or pasture, blow in, or a tree comes down. Consumption renders the bloodstream’s oxygen useless, resulting in asphyxia. Infringing fruits include chokecherries, plums, prunes, peaches, nectarines, pluots, apricots, and prunes in both cultivated and wild forms. I do feed these plants’ fresh prunings to my goats. I cut three or four branches at a time and throw them into the cage to keep them fresh. I also only give them enough to eat within ten minutes, and they still have to remove all the leaves. As I feed this method, I don’t have any leftover leaves, but if I did, I would manually pick them and add them to the compost or burn pile. Those branches become kindling or end up in the burn pile if I get sidetracked for a few minutes by a phone call or anything else.
If enough ponderosa pine needles are ingested, ruminants may experience abortion. I would want to get rid of any ponderosa in my pasture if I could since goats are drawn to them and because they can be found in huge amounts on the ground during the winter when there isn’t much else to eat. There are literally dozens of pine species to pick from that are not known to cause this issue if you wish to grow pine.
Tall ferns with thick stems known as bracken or brake ferns carry a poison that builds up over time. Because it produces endorphins, animals become addicted to it. Since they are already drawn to brush by nature, goats are more likely than other animals to become addicted to it quickly. This plant shouldn’t ever be accessible to them. Remove it or put up a fence to keep them out. Bracken is responsible for the acute anemia brought on by the bleeding. It can also lead to thiamine deficiency, which in turn causes goat polioencephalomalacia, a disease that is lethal without treatment and is also a carcinogen.
Concentrations of alkaloids can be found in the upper plant portions of datura and nightshade plants, green potato skins, tomato leaves, stems, and blossoms. Toxicity from these alkaloids can result from consuming very small amounts of some (like datura) or repeatedly or in huge amounts of others, including tomato leaves and greened potato skins. Confusion, excessive heat, and vision problems are early warning signs that can progress to convulsions, a coma, and eventually death.
Rhubarb leaves contain kidney-damaging substances like a very high level of oxalic acid, hence they should never be offered to anything in any amount.
There are certain additional precautions you can take when caring for goats to lessen the chance of issues, in addition to removing as many harmful plants as you can from their habitat. First, while they are kept in their paddock, we always ensure that our goats are adequately fed. Additionally, make sure they have access to minerals like kelp at all times to prevent deficits that can lead them to seek out strange plants to meet an unmet demand. We removed poisonous plants and trees from the vicinity of pastures, and we fenced off areas where problematic plants were present. Even the fruit trees that were a fruitful prunus species and near to the goat pens have been removed (pain).

Are daffodils snowdrops?
If you’ve been brave enough to venture outside lately, you might have seen that daffodils and snowdrops are starting to bloom. When these cheerful springtime harbingers have flowered, what happens to them is explained by Professor Richard Ellis and Rosemary Newton.
The fact that snowdrops and daffodils are among the earliest flowers to bloom in late winter and early spring makes them symbols of Britain. They are known as temperate woodland geophytes, which is a botanical word for plants with underground storage organs, or bulbs in the case of these two plants.
But what happens to these well-known species after flowering? Their exceptionally early flowering time is followed by a protracted seed maturity phase. This starts on the plant and goes on after the seeds are shed and buried in the ground. Few seeds are capable of germination quickly or readily during the time of shedding.
Snowdrops and daffodils in deciduous woodlands that are wild or naturalized do not have to compete with other plants for sunlight because they flower in the late winter to early spring. Despite the short length of the winter days, the tree canopy above is leafless, allowing for sufficient sunshine to stimulate growth and sustain seed development after pollination.
However, the seeds only have a brief window of time to mature before the chance is gone as tree leaves emerge and unfold. By late spring, a large portion of the light required for plant (and seed) growth is blocked by the tree canopy.
Because of this, the growth and maturation of snowdrop and daffodil seeds is limited in time and is not entirely finished on the mother plant as it would be in other species.
Instead, the brown and yellow capsules burst open to reveal the moist, relatively young seed inside. These are buried beneath foliage, in leaf litter, or in soil crevices.
Daffodil seeds are dispersed close to the parent plant in a passive process. However, in the case of snowdrops, ants gather and bring the seeds back to their nest where they devour the elaiosome, an oil-rich appendage, and then toss the intact seed.
By the conclusion of a warm (15–20 C) summer, the embryos inside the moist seed can reach a length of up to 2.4 mm. Such summertime conditions encourage subsequent fall germination, which is subsequently aided by the cooler autumnal temperatures.
For many species, summer dryness plays a vital but distinct role. Desiccation reduces the viability of snowdrop seeds since they are sensitive to it. Daffodil seeds, on the other hand, can withstand being dried out throughout the summer, but this prolongs their dormancy.
Daffodil seed germination can be delayed until the following second fall due to drought at the end of the summer. This dissimilar behavior helps to explain why daffodils can be found in a wider range of habitats whereas snowdrops are confined to damp places.
But the story of progress doesn’t end there. Following the emergence of the roots in the autumn, the development of the shoots starts in the winter and progresses gradually until late January.
Seedlings likely benefit from the same advantage as mature plants from the timing of their flowering: less competition for water, light, and nutrients in the forest understory.

What consumes the flowerheads of daffodils?
Only the South-West of the British mainland was once thought to be this pest’s primary habitat. However, it has recently become a widespread issue even in the North of Scotland as a result of “global warming and/or the influence of extensive plantings of daffodils by public bodies.” The fly, which resembles a little bumble bee, is easily identified by the high-pitched whine it makes when flying. It is only active on windless days when the temperature is over 20C (68F). In seven days, eggs that are deposited on daffodil foliage close to the ground will hatch. At this stage, the larval descends and crawls inside the bulb by biting through the base plate. Once inside, it stays and grows in size by devouring the bulb’s center. The adult fly emerges in April and May after emerging from the bulb in March and pupating in the ground. These are examples of fly presence indicators:
- the existence of a small, difficult-to-see hole in the base plate of recently unearthed bulbs. Due to the larva’s modest size, the bulb will still be hard.
- When planting bulbs, look for soft bulbs that, when sliced open, reveal a huge grub in the center of the hollowed-out bulb, surrounded by a pile of frass (fly excreta).
- In the open ground, the lack of bulb emergence the next season or an abundance of “The base plate develops a grass-like growth that the grub does not always completely consume. This “After a few years, grass-like growth will transform into floral bulbs once more with regular lifting and replanting cultivation.
For this insect, there is currently no chemical preventative or treatment accessible to the novice grower. The grubs inside the bulb will be killed by HWT (Hot Water Treatment), but the harm has already been done. If the bulb is a prized or recently purchased expensive cultivar, it might still be possible to salvage it by cultivating it as described above. Consider covering the beds with fleece or enviromesh if this pest is a particular problem in your neighborhood to stop the fly from getting to the foliage to deposit its eggs. It must be kept in mind that when the cover is in place, this will not work against flies that rise from the ground. It’s important to remember that this fly also uses snowdrops as a host plant, which could explain why some areas have troublesome populations. See here for further details.
Small Narcissus Fly(Eumerus spp)
This fly can have two or three generations per year and is significantly smaller. Although this has lately been called into question, it is rumored that it only attacks broken bulbs. Damage to bulbs in the ground is typically limited to a few bulbs, while bulbs in storage pose a considerably bigger concern since major damage can happen. In the bulb, there are more little maggots than there is in the case of the giant fly. The huge narcissus fly is controlled the same way.
Bulb Scale Mite (Stenotasonemus laticeps)
With the cultivation of numerous home plants or orchids, this has escalated into a significant issue. Only daffodils stored above 17C (62F) are likely to have this light-colored mite, which can hardly be seen with the unaided eye and only targets the top third of the bulb. HWT kills it, and a pesticide licensed for that purpose may be used to control it.
Bulb Mites (Rhizoglyphus and Histiostoma spp)
A much larger mite than the one described above with two dark spots that often only attacks bulbs in storage that have already been harmed by fungus. Hygiene is the key to control.
Slugs and Snails
Although they often only cause little harm to the leaves, these pests are becoming a bigger problem for daffodil farmers because they can transfer viruses from afflicted plants. They can cause the flowers considerable harm, generally over night. Control is accomplished using a suitable molluscicide, available in pellet and liquid forms, or by hand during routine inspections. A more recent and natural technique is the use of a nematode that targets slugs particularly. Early signs of effectiveness in reducing keel slugs, which attack the underground bulb, are encouraging.
Swift Moths(Hepialus spp)
a comparatively unimportant issue with daffodils brought on by caterpillars damaging the outer scales of the bulbs. The moth can be controlled by removing the weeds and grass where it breeds.
Stem Nematodes (Eelworm-Dityenchus dipsaci)
The daffodil pest that causes the most havoc and that growers fear the most. The earliest signs are “spickels,” which are tiny, yellow, elevated, and lumpy lesions on the edges of leaves or stems. It is not visible to the human eye. Large portions of the beds will typically have weak growth, stunted plants, or even no growth at all. Cut bulbs will reveal brown rings where the nematodes have attacked the individual scales, It is important to eliminate infected plants and take precautions to avoid getting the virus on boots or clothing. Eelworm in the earth cannot be treated chemically, and affected regions should not be utilized to grow daffodils. The nematodes can be killed by HWT, but doing so necessitates a high temperature, meticulous temperature control, and the use of permitted chemicals in the solution. See here for further details.
Basal Rot (caused by Fusarium oxysporum F.sp. narcissi)
The threat posed by this most severe daffodil bulb disease, which was first identified a century ago, is getting worse because to the warmer summers. A soft or mummified bulb with a chocolate brown rot growing upwards from the base plate is shown as the foliage prematurely dies back, which is one of the first indications. Recovery of the bulb is typically no longer viable at this point. Spores can spread widely and remain viable in the soil for more than ten years, and the bulbs can get infected during storage or after planting. Even in the business world, control is quite challenging. Even resistant cultivars like St. Kevern, which are grown, are not immune. Avoiding fresh manure and too much nitrogen is crucial, and early bulb lifting is desirable. These need to be sprayed with a proper fungicide right away, then dried quickly using electric fans in a well-ventilated area. Planting should take place in late September or early October, when soil temperatures are lower, and storage should be kept at a low temperature of 17–18 C (62–64 F). Neck Rot
Although less frequent than basal rot, this issue is getting worse. The disease, as its name suggests, moves from the bulb’s neck to its main body. There are numerous causes. Enicillium, botrytis, and fusarium (see basal rot), as well as fusarium, are all implicated, but typically individually. Control for this condition is the same as for basal rot, perhaps with any fungicide authorized for it.
