Planting bulbs that most animals won’t bother trying to eat is one of the simpler solutions you can provide if your clients aren’t devoted to growing tulips.

Rabbits stay away from daffodils and snowflakes because they contain the toxic compound lycorine. Although ornamental onions (Allium spp.) aren’t harmful, many animals don’t like the taste of them.

Other sorts of bulbs that you can place for clients and that should have fewer problems with being eaten in the spring are crocuses, Spanish bluebells, grape hyacinths, snowdrops, and Siberian squill.

Tulips can also be made to feel a little safer by being interplanted with the less desirable varieties.

What varieties of flowers detest rabbits?

Even while gardeners prefer geranium cultivars with a citrus, rose, or other alluring fragrance, they are said to prevent rabbits because to their strong scent.   • Lily-of-the-Valley
  • Little white, nodding, bell-shaped blooms with a fragrant scent and medium-bright green, lance-shaped leaves cover the stems of lily-of-the-valley. Even better, they will flourish in the garden’s shaded areas.
  • Iris of Siberia
  • Squirrels will stay away from the intricate, frilly blossoms of Siberian iris, which delivers early season color.

The Fritillaria meleagris, also known as the Checkered Lily due to the distinctive checkerboard pattern on parts of the plants, and the Fritillaria imperialis, also known as the Crown Imperial, which has tufts of leaves on top of the bell-shaped flowers, are two standouts.
  • While they are particularly tolerant of shade, hyacinthoides, commonly known as bluebells or wood hyacinths, thrive in both full sun and shade. Large blossoms in various lavender tones are readily available and make wonderful accents to cut bouquets.
  • Muscari, or Grape Hyacinths, produce spikes with blue and white blossoms that remain for a long time. The blossoms not only resemble grapes in appearance but also scent. They can be positioned to cover longer stems behind tulips and daffodils and make excellent companions for both.
  • Early spring brings forth the star-shaped flowers of scillas, which come in lovely pastel hues. On some species, flowers develop in the shape of softball-sized spheres and others along tall spikes. One of the most shade-tolerant bulbs is this one.
  • Snowdrops, or Galanthus, have white, drooping flowers that have a faint fragrance. Since they bloom early in the spring, place them near the side of a path or anywhere that is visible from a window. Remember where you put the snowdrops so you don’t unintentionally dig them up since they dormant in the summer.
  • Leucojum, or Snowflakes, is a plant with long, narrow leaves that resemble enormous lily of the valley and lovely white bells. While some types bloom in the early spring, others only do so in the later summer. When planted in drifts, they look their best.
  • One of the early spring bloomers, eranthis, also known as Winter Aconite or Buttercup, occasionally adds color even before the snow has completely melted. The three to four inch long stalks bearing the golden, cup-shaped flowers.

Making your yard less inviting before pests arrive is an excellent way to manage pests. You have to give everything a shot, even though there is no assurance that rabbits won’t take a nibble here and there. By putting in thesepest-resistant bulbs now, your garden will look better in the future.

What can I grow in my garden to deter bunnies?

Install a rabbit proof garden fence

Building a fence around the garden that is rabbit-proof is probably one of the best strategies to keep rabbits out of your food garden. Unless you also wish to defend your garden from deer, it doesn’t need to be very tall. Your fence must be two feet high to deter cottontail rabbits and three feet high to deter jackrabbits.

If money is tight, use chicken wire, but in the long run, hardware cloth is probably preferable. Just be sure to bury the bottom of the fence so that bunnies can’t climb over it.

If an electric fence appeals to you, install the wires at 3 and 10 above the ground. Hardware cloth is more expensive than electric fencing if you require a low-cost option.

Using floating row covers at night (when rabbits prefer to roam the garden) is a related concept.

Plants that keep rabbits away

These plants will keep rabbits away. To keep the bunnies out of the garden, plant a few of them there.

  • A rabbit barrier can be made in your garden by planting marigolds all around it (they hate the smell of the marigolds)
  • Keep the bunnies away with spicy globe basil and create a ton of pesto all summer long.

Do coffee grounds deter bunnies?

What is consuming the daffodil blossoms I have?

Only the South-West of the British mainland was once thought to be this pest’s primary habitat. However, it has recently become a widespread issue even in the North of Scotland as a result of “global warming and/or the influence of extensive plantings of daffodils by public bodies.” The fly, which resembles a little bumble bee, is easily identified by the high-pitched whine it makes when flying. It is only active on windless days when the temperature is over 20C (68F). In seven days, eggs that are deposited on daffodil foliage close to the ground will hatch. At this stage, the larval descends and crawls inside the bulb by biting through the base plate. Once inside, it stays and grows in size by devouring the bulb’s center. The adult fly emerges in April and May after emerging from the bulb in March and pupating in the ground. These are examples of fly presence indicators:

  • the existence of a small, difficult-to-see hole in the base plate of recently unearthed bulbs. Due to the larva’s modest size, the bulb will still be hard.
  • When planting bulbs, look for soft bulbs that, when sliced open, reveal a huge grub in the center of the hollowed-out bulb, surrounded by a pile of frass (fly excreta).
  • In the open ground, the lack of bulb emergence the next season or an abundance of “The base plate develops a grass-like growth that the grub does not always completely consume. This “After a few years, grass-like growth will transform into floral bulbs once more with regular lifting and replanting cultivation.

For this insect, there is currently no chemical preventative or treatment accessible to the novice grower. The grubs inside the bulb will be killed by HWT (Hot Water Treatment), but the harm has already been done. If the bulb is a prized or recently purchased expensive cultivar, it might still be possible to salvage it by cultivating it as described above. Consider covering the beds with fleece or enviromesh if this pest is a particular problem in your neighborhood to stop the fly from getting to the foliage to deposit its eggs. Small Narcissus Fly(Eumerus spp)

This fly can have two or three generations per year and is significantly smaller. Although this has lately been called into question, it is rumored that it only attacks broken bulbs. Damage to bulbs in the ground is typically limited to a few bulbs, while bulbs in storage pose a considerably bigger concern since major damage can happen. In the bulb, there are more little maggots than there is in the case of the giant fly. The huge narcissus fly is controlled the same way.

Bulb Scale Mite (Stenotasonemus laticeps)

With the cultivation of numerous home plants or orchids, this has escalated into a significant issue. Only daffodils stored above 17C (62F) are likely to have this light-colored mite, which can hardly be seen with the unaided eye and only targets the top third of the bulb. Slugs and Snails

Although they often only cause little harm to the leaves, these pests are becoming a bigger problem for daffodil farmers because they can transfer viruses from afflicted plants. They can cause the flowers considerable harm, generally over night. Control is accomplished using a suitable molluscicide, available in pellet and liquid forms, or by hand during routine inspections. A more recent and natural technique is the use of a nematode that targets slugs particularly. Early signs of effectiveness in reducing keel slugs, which attack the underground bulb, are encouraging.

Swift Moths(Hepialus spp)

a comparatively unimportant issue with daffodils brought on by caterpillars damaging the outer scales of the bulbs. The moth can be controlled by removing the weeds and grass where it breeds.

Stem Nematodes (Eelworm-Dityenchus dipsaci)

The daffodil pest that causes the most havoc and that growers fear the most. The earliest signs are “spickels,” which are tiny, yellow, elevated, and lumpy lesions on the edges of leaves or stems. It is not visible to the human eye. Large portions of the beds will typically have weak growth, stunted plants, or even no growth at all. Cut bulbs will reveal brown rings where the nematodes have attacked the individual scales, It is important to eliminate infected plants and take precautions to avoid getting the virus on boots or clothing. Eelworm in the earth cannot be treated chemically, and affected regions should not be utilized to grow daffodils. The nematodes can be killed by HWT, but doing so necessitates a high temperature, meticulous temperature control, and the use of permitted chemicals in the solution. See here for further details.

Basal Rot (caused by Fusarium oxysporum F.sp. narcissi)

The threat posed by this most severe daffodil bulb disease, which was first identified a century ago, is getting worse because to the warmer summers. A soft or mummified bulb with a chocolate brown rot growing upwards from the base plate is shown as the foliage prematurely dies back, which is one of the first indications. Recovery of the bulb is typically no longer viable at this point. Spores can spread widely and remain viable in the soil for more than ten years, and the bulbs can get infected during storage or after planting. Even in the business world, control is quite challenging. Even resistant cultivars like St. Kevern, which are grown, are not immune. Avoiding fresh manure and too much nitrogen is crucial, and early bulb lifting is desirable. These need to be sprayed with a proper fungicide right away, then dried quickly using electric fans in a well-ventilated area. Planting should take place in late September or early October, when soil temperatures are lower, and storage should be kept at a low temperature of 17–18 C (62–64 F). Neck Rot

Although less frequent than basal rot, this issue is getting worse. The disease, as its name suggests, moves from the bulb’s neck to its main body. There are numerous causes. Enicillium, botrytis, and fusarium (see basal rot), as well as fusarium, are all implicated, but typically individually. Control for this condition is the same as for basal rot, perhaps with any fungicide authorized for it.

Smoulder (caused by botrytis narcissiola)

Although less severe than the rots mentioned above, this disease nonetheless results in diminished bulb yields and unshowable blossoms until it is completely eradicated. As the leaves emerge from the bulb, a mass of grey spores appears, causing the leaves to adhere to one another. It is most likely to happen under chilly, rainy conditions. The leaves can be pulled away from the bulb to reveal a grey mold at the base, and the flowers are frequently seen. In cold weather and later in the season, when it is harder to see, it might also happen. The original infection typically happens the year prior, thus HWT and foliar spraying with the right fungicide are used to manage the condition while the bulbs are growing. The beds that are left in place for a second year should have the dead vegetation removed.

Leaf Scorch (caused by Stagonospora )

Another issue that was formerly isolated to the South West of the nation but has since spread. Leaf tips that turn reddish brown with a yellow border are the signs. There may be spotting on the flowers, and there is frequently premature dieback. HWT and an adequate foliar fungal treatment are used to control the situation.

Daffodils are susceptible to a wide range of viral infections, the most prevalent of which is yellow stripe virus. As its name implies, it may be recognized by the yellow stripes on the green leaf, which become increasingly noticeable as the foliage emerges and frequently vanish as the season goes on. Cucumber mosaic virus, white streak virus, and tobacco rattle virus are additional frequent viruses. In some circumstances, the blooms also experience “breaking or light patches on the petals or black streaks.” In most circumstances, the plants involved will lose vigor and produce less even while the flowers are unaffected. The numerous viral infections are spread by a number of vectors, including aphids above ground and nematodes and millipedes below. The illness may spread slowly or quickly across the collection, but the only way to stop it is to ruthlessly kill any plants that are plainly afflicted. Any extremely old cultivars should be considered to be susceptible to viral infections of this kind, so it is probably best to avoid growing them alongside a modern collection. Some farmers make an effort to persuade themselves that the symptoms they observe are not caused by a virus but rather by the plant being stressed. However, the virus will typically be most visible when the plant is stressed, so it is wiser to anticipate the worst rather than take the chance of infecting the entire collection. Control involves eliminating any diseased bulbs and preventing the agents that spread the disease by frequently spraying plants with HWT to kill nematodes and killing aphids during the growing season.
