Clay is one of the several soil types that plants may endure. Blackberries shouldn’t be overwatered as this can cause root rot.

Gaillardia is a stylish way to beat the heat. These hardy perennials, sometimes known as blanket flowers, are water-wise and exhibit remarkable drought tolerance once established. Gaillardia may grow in a variety of soil types and does best in sandy, unfavorable locations.
Ultra VioletTM Buddleia
Buddleia are ideally suited to dry soil conditions because they naturally grow on rocky ravines in clay, sand, or loam. In soils that range from acidic to alkaline, plants thrive. In actuality, proper drainage is one of the few soil needs for healthy buddleia.
Miss LemonTM Abelia
Abelia is a versatile landscaping shrub that thrives in challenging garden spots with seasonal variations in soil moisture. Plants can survive sporadic soil saturation, but not persistent waterlogging. But what if a spot is flooded? Does that mean you shouldn’t cultivate there? It is never a good idea to leave the area without nurturing it first. This is due to the fact that there are methods for increasing soil productivity and that some excellent vegetables may be grown successfully on wet soil.
Cauliflowers, celery, spinach, groundnuts, Kang Kong, garden pea, arugula, watercress, asparagus, mint, taro, skirret, Butterbur, cabbage, black chokeberry, and other vegetables can be produced well in damp soil.

What environmental factors favor daylilies?
The best daylilies bloom when they are grown in wet, well-drained soil with full light (6 hours each day). Dark-colored varieties should get some afternoon shade in hot regions to keep their bloom color. Daylilies require little maintenance and will bloom for years when planted in the right spot. They only need an annual addition of compost for fertilizing.
Plant daylilies as soon as possible after receiving them if you ordered them by mail. Plant in the spring or fall in the South while the weather is still cool. Daylilies should be planted in the North in the spring so they have plenty of time to establish themselves before winter. However, because daylilies are such hardy plants, they may often be planted anytime from spring through October in the North.
Before planting, add compost to the soil. Plants should be spaced 12 to 18 inches apart, with the crown positioned around 1 inch below the soil’s surface. To keep moisture in the soil and stop weeds from growing, water thoroughly and cover the mulch with bark or straw. Young transplants should be kept weed-free and well-watered for the first year even though they are resilient once they are established.

With the late snowstorms and a lot of rain, this spring has been difficult for gardeners so far. Working the soil when it is too damp is a typical gardening blunder. If the soil has a high clay content, working it when it is too damp can affect its structure and leave you with crust and rock-hard clumps of soil.
The type of soil you have in your garden will strongly influence how long you need to wait following a rain event. A thick clay loam soil, like the kind you probably have in the Chicago area, will require more time to dry out fully before it can be treated in the best conditions. Most likely, one cool, sunny day won’t be enough. Early spring has colder temperatures than summer, which causes soils to take longer to dry up. It may be possible to work sandy loam soil the day after a storm because it dries out so quickly.
The amount of rain and the speed at which it falls will be additional factors.
In contrast to a brief, intense downpour during which most of the rain runs off, a gradual rain over several days will substantially saturate the soil, necessitating longer time for it to dry out.
Depending on the exposure (more sun means quicker drying), grade, and size of the area, different parts of your garden will dry out at varying rates (low areas that tend to collect water will require more time to dry out). Recently, I have noticed that many gardens are frequently quite damp (unworkable) for several days at a time. It’s also preferable to avoid walking on too-wet beds to prevent the soil from becoming more compacted.
Take a handful of dirt from the bed and gently squeeze it to make a ball to see if you can work the soil in your garden. This is the best way to tell. To remove the soil, use a garden trowel. If it crumbles readily when you use your thumb or fingers to break it apart, the bed is safe to use for working. If the dirt crumbles into a squishy ball when you try to break it up with your fingers or forms a ribbon when you push it with your thumb, it is too damp to work with. A sandy soil might be challenging to mold into a ball and is likely to crumble easily.
You might have to wait a few days for the soil to completely dry out if your test indicates that it is too damp. However, I would absolutely stay away from trying to amend any “wet soil with compost, spading it to loosen, or cultivating” if you needed to plant a few things in the near future.
