It’s far from being as tough as you might imagine to grow new daffodils. It is actually among the simplest plants to hybridize. After a few months, you can frequently harvest some seeds after cross-pollinating two daffodils. Every single seed you collect will produce a unique daffodil because, just like with people, no two daffodil seeds will ever be identical.
Picking two types that you like is the first step in cross-pollination. Anything will do; just pick two you like. The pollen and stamen are readily visible when you look within the flowers.
Simply gather pollen and apply it to the stamen of a different type to complete the process. You can do this by picking a pollen-filled anther with tweezers, but I like to simply choose a blossom from the pollen plant (also known as the “father plant”), open it up, and spread the anthers over the stamen of the “mother plant.”
Once you’ve done this, you’ll notice that the pollen adheres to the stamen with ease. Avoid bruising the mother plant’s stem, neck, or bloom as the seeds need about eight to ten weeks to grow on her flower. The seed bud, which is concealed on the back of the flower, has been gently growing for the past eight to ten weeks. Over the next eight weeks, it will swell to the size of a marble.
This size fits a typical daffodil. Smaller seed buds result from pollinating smaller daffodils.
You must be careful to check the seed buds frequently after about 8 weeks; when they begin to turn brown and somewhat shrivel, they are ready to be harvested. The seed buds may break if you wait too long to examine them, and the seeds will then likely fall to the ground and be difficult to locate. The seeds will have pinhead size. Large daffodil seeds will be slightly larger. Smaller daffodil seeds will be produced.
The next half of the narrative, however, may be a little depressing: you must wait five to six years after planting the seeds before you begin to see effects. It will take this much time for the seed to develop into a bulb large enough to bear flowers. However, there isn’t much that needs to be done differently to cultivate the seeds compared to cultivating ordinary daffodils.
The seeds are sown in a pot or tray in the fall, no deeper than half an inch. In the same area of the garden where you grow your other bulbs, you can plant this container.
You will observe each seed sprouting a single leaf in the first spring, which won’t be much larger than a leaf of grass from your lawn.
Because you won’t have to dig them up after the first year of growth, planting them in a pot or tray makes sense. The seeds will develop into little daffodil bulbs in the first year, but these bulbs won’t be much larger than the seeds you planted.
It would be challenging to dig and replant because you might not be able to locate all the tiny bulbs. Therefore, I typically leave the pot or tray containing the seeds in the ground for at least three years while only maintaining their weed-free status.
The bulbs will then truly benefit from being replanted every year to give them more room. Because bulb size is growing quickly these days, spacing will be increasingly crucial. Some of the bulbs have gotten big enough to produce a blossom when you dig the seedlings in the fifth year. Finally, your first creations may be shown to you in the sixth spring, at which point you may begin to truly appreciate them. Some of your seedlings might require an additional year to reach the size necessary to bloom.
Since not all of them are attractive, selection is necessary. The attractive ones might stay, while the others wind up in the hedge or by the road.
You continue to choose over the next five years, and occasionally even longer, and only those who consistently do well are kept. First and foremost, I search for a flower that is attractive, but I also consider how well it performs in the garden. The flowers should not be too much downward looking and should be well above the leaves in my opinion. Sometimes I remove a nicer flower than the others since they are simply more attractive plants and function better in the garden.

Daffodils may they cross-pollinate?
Due to the time of year when daffodils bloom, this query has recently come up multiple times. Daffodils have huge, spectacular blossoms, so I suppose that at some point in the distant past, insects—likely bees—pollinated them.
Daffodils, however, are no longer particularly alluring to insects, similar to most blooms that have been heavily modified by plant breeders. It is clear why this is the case. Plant breeders choose attractive blooms based on aesthetics. Daffodils are chosen in particular for their color, symmetry, angle (does it face up or down), size, and other arbitrary features that daffodil judges look for.
Plant breeders have created an astounding diversity of daffodils that range from white to yellow to orange to pink by selecting for these traits and crossing them with individuals who have other advantageous attributes. Some of them are very lovely and highly coveted by both collectors and flower connoisseurs.
The blooms that daffodil breeders want to cross are manually pollinated, and if everything goes smoothly, they should receive a few seeds from each cross. For several years, these seeds are sown and cared for. Before the bulb is big enough to bear flowers, I think the average is around seven. The breeder doesn’t get to witness the benefits of his labor until that point. Once a flower has been developed and is desired by the breeder, it is duplicated by asexual reproduction, in which the bulbs split and create new bulbs.
Many of the qualities that attracted pollinators to the flower in the first place are lost throughout this process. If you solely consider aesthetics, for instance, you can overlook the pollinators’ preferences for smell, sweet nectar, nourishing pollen, or any number of other things.
I had the wonderful fortune to meet one of the top daffodil breeders in the world many years ago while I was a member of the Oregon Daffodil Society. I questioned her as to why she didn’t think pollen transported by the wind or by animal pollinators may taint all of her meticulously documented crosses. It intrigued me to learn that this wasn’t thought to be significant because these carefully produced flowers very rarely cross naturally.
All types of flowers, from roses to pansies, experience this loss of pollinator-attractive characteristics. It is not just a problem for daffodils. It is the major justification for encouraging people who are interested in creating native bee habitat or wild pollinator habitat to choose native or heirloom plants that have not undergone extensive manipulation. There are certain telltale signs of extensive breeding if you are unsure about a plant’s past. Large, variegated, unusually colored, enormous, long-blooming, or flowers with several sets of petals, sometimes known as “doubles” or “triples,” are some examples of these.
Remember that many gardening catalogs highlight the kinds that are enticing to pollinators if you’re seeking to plant for pollinators. Keep an eye out for local plants that draw a lot of pollinators; you might be able to ask the owner for the variety name, get a cutting, or learn where the seed originated.
The most crucial thing to keep in mind is that pollinators frequently prefer blooms that are less attractive to people.
Daffodils may they self-pollinate?
Each and every daffodil bloom is “complete, having both male and female reproductive parts, making them self-fertile. Most daffodils are naturally pollinated by the wind or by insects like bees, which move pollen from the anthers to the stigma. This pollen enters the ovary of the flower, fertilizing the ovules and ultimately resulting in the development of seeds. Following the demise of the flower, the ovary grows into a seedpod that contains around two dozen seeds and disperses toward the end of the year.
Can other flowers be planted beside daffodils?

However, perennials that bloom in the spring should also be taken into account as daffodil companion plants. Columbine, poppies, and bleeding hearts all bloom around the same time as daffodils.

Do daffodils benefit bees in any way?
I recently purchased 80 snake-head fritillary bulbs. These spring flowers are my favorite because of their toughness, desire to thrive in my damp, dark yard, and amazing bell-shaped blossoms with elaborate checkerboard patterns. Bumblebees also enjoy them.
Bumblebees are left to fend for themselves, unlike honeybees, whose caretakers make sure there is enough food in the hive to last them until spring. The queens emerge in the spring with very little vitality because they can hibernate for up to six months. As early as February, you can literally see them clinging on closed petals in anticipation of the first swallow of nectar that will enable them to fly out in quest of a good nesting location. Without that early food supply, they risk dying.
The crocus is another one of my favorite spring bulbs, even though it is really a corm. Large areas of crocus are alive with the sound of anxious buzzing on sunny spring days, as they are also adored by bees. A thick layer of pollen covers the bodies of fat bumble queens as they bob from one blossom to the next. Honey bees, solitary bees, and the occasional hoverfly join them. After a long winter indoors, seeing them all rolling around the flowers makes me think of cows skipping in the field.
Bumblebee queens may spend the night in these floral cocoons as crocus blooms close at night and only completely open in the sun, allowing them to feed on nectar in the morning sun. Sadly, the shade in my garden prevents me from growing crocus, but if you have the room, plant them in a sunny area in large quantities so they can serve as a bright beacon for queen bees looking for a place to gather nectar and pollen.
Generally speaking, bulbs and corms need to be planted three times deeper than they are tall. Don’t worry too much though; the majority of plants have “contractile roots,” which mean they move around in the soil until they are at the right depth.
Grape hyacinths, winter aconites, and snowdrops are additional bee-friendly bulbs that can be planted right away (although winter aconites and snowdrops are more successful when planted “in the green” in spring). The lone hairy footed flower bee (Anthophora plumipes), which resembles a bumblebee but moves more like a hoverfly, likes grape hyacinths. Bees usually stay away from daffodils unless there are no other options available. Alliums and English bluebells are later (but equally useful) bee bulbs.
Grow native primroses, lungwort, and early-flowering hellebores if you don’t like spring bulbs. Even better, grow them alongside bulbs, like I do. Take some time in the spring to observe the first, hungry bees as they approach your garden. After the winter, they serve as a reminder that summer is approaching by skipping around the field.
