Are cicadas harmful to hydrangeas?

If netting prevents proper air circulation, there may be a trade-off between cicada protection and increased susceptibility to leaf disease infections. Even though both problems are mainly aesthetic and don’t usually affect the plants’ long-term health, the limited cicada damage would be simpler to repair than more extensive leaf marring. The best possible air circulation and leaf drying will be made possible by netting with the broadest apertures feasible (size recommendations are listed below under the “management” section).

Many of you have likely been reminded of 2011, when central North Carolina last had a periodic cicada invasion, as a result of hearing about the forthcoming appearance of the 17-year periodic cicadas (Magicicada). The ubiquitous insects were a popular with kids, dogs, cats, and chickens! In 2011, we spent more than a month in the company of millions of 13-year cicadas, marveling at the incredibly loud and surreal clamor of their mating calls as we told friends and neighbors about them.

In 2011, many people who lived in areas with high cicada populations had damaged young trees and bushes as a result of the female cicadas making slits in tree branches to lay her eggs. In order to lay their eggs, cicadas prefer stems and branches that are about the diameter of a pencil. On mature trees, only the branch tips are harmed, and the trees recover, but on young trees, the main trunk and primary lateral branches might be harmed, resulting in substantial damage. Crops like vegetables or strawberries are not under danger because cicada larvae primarily consume woody perennials.

Young blueberry, bramble, and fruit tree plantings made by farmers and gardeners may be particularly prone to cicada damage. The 17-year Brood II cicadas are not anticipated to be nearly as numerous in central North Carolina as the 13-year Brood XIX cicadas were back in 2011, which is good news, according to Dr. Hannah Burrack, a small fruit entomologist at NC State University. Cicada Nymphs

Nymphs normally do not significantly harm the plant since they eat the plant’s roots rather than its leaves or stems.

Nymphs pierce the roots with their piercing mouthparts in order to absorb the liquids present in the xylem of the plant. The portion of the plant responsible for moving moisture and nutrients from the roots to the leaves is known as the xylem. Cicada nymphs may not actually harm plants, but if there are a lot of them feeding on the roots of a plant, plant growth may be hindered.

What Don’t Cicadas Eat?

Do cicadas hurt plants in any way?

For healthy plants and trees, this usually isn’t a serious worry although it can result in branches or stems flagging.

Cicadas are not toxic and cannot sting or bite humans. They are only bothersome mainly because of their obtrusive presence, loud singing, and large numbers. Please don’t consider applying pesticides to them. It’s pointless and in no way justifiable.

How can I eradicate cicadas?

Since cicadas are root parasites, they consume the roots of trees and plants. Periodic cicadas can have an impact on a tree’s growth and health, but annual cicadas don’t appear to harm plant roots. According to a University of Notre Dame study, cicada emergences had no impact on the health of trees in the years before they occurred, but they significantly slowed down tree development in the year following them.

Cicadas may be kept from climbing trees by wrapping foil barrier tape over the trunks of weak trees. Cicadas won’t settle on delicate shrubs and fruit-bearing plants if they are covered in cheesecloth or fine netting. Avoid planting these trees during recurrent cicada years, and use insecticide and netting to protect any young trees. Trees less than 4 feet tall may not survive because the cicadas will attack their roots as well.
