As soon as the sweet peas’ brittle, brown shells appear, start preserving the seeds. Sweet pea seedpods won’t germinate if you harvest them before they are fully developed. However, if you wait too long, the fragile seed pods will crack open and scatter their seeds all over the place. The procedure may take a few weeks, so keep an eye on them. You need to immediately pluck the pods if they start to split.
Sweet pea seeds are simple to collect. Remove the seeds from the seedpods and bring the plant inside. Saving sweet pea seeds
Starting in early September, seed can be harvested. Till they have taken on the color of a paper bag, leave the seed pods on the plants. When you’re ready to sow them, gather them on a dry day, separate them from their pods, and store them in paper bags in a dry location.
Do sweet peas reproduce on their own?
Although sweet peas can be grown in pots or hanging baskets, a larger in-ground growing area is typically preferable. These plants want lots of space both in breadth and depth because the size of the blossoms is inversely proportional to the size of the roots.

In around two weeks, roots will begin to form. Only 11 days passed between the photo’s roots developing. When roots appear in this manner, you can plant them in a quality potting mix. My rooted cuttings are then placed in an unheated greenhouse.

About six weeks later, the cuttings’ fresh growth is visible, and they are almost ready to be planted outside.
Final thoughts: I started the cuttings from “mother” plants that were begun in the fall (November). Cuttings were made at the end of January, and roots started to appear around the start of February. By the end of March, the cuttings had enough new growth to be planted.
How can the quality of pea seeds be determined?
Raise your hand if you have ever questioned, “Hmmmm, are these seeds any good?” at this time of year as you stroll out into the garage or wherever you keep your seed collection from the previous year or years.
Will they sprout, or start to grow, shoot, or produce buds? Will planting these seeds be a waste of time and effort? My arm is raised. I have leftover flower and vegetable seeds from the previous year, seeds I collected, and seeds that others have given me. Because they were given to us by particular friends and/or loved ones, certain seeds have sentimental value or memories associated with them. What can you then do?
To determine whether the seeds in question will germinate (the process by which an organism grows from a seed or similar structure) or are viable, there are a few tests that can be employed (able to take root or grow).
The water test is one way to assess the viability of seeds. Take the seeds and put them in a water-filled container. Give the seeds 15 minutes to sit. The seeds are still good if they sink; if they float, toss them because it’s likely they won’t grow.
If it is the right time to plant, sow the seeds directly in the ground; otherwise, completely dry them before planting.
From the seed package in question, take at least 10 seeds and arrange them in a row on top of a lightly moist paper towel. Place the towel in a clear plastic bag after folding it over the seeds. Place the bag in a warm (above 70 degrees) position after sealing it. Although most seeds don’t require much light, a warm windowsill or the top of the refrigerator are both good places to start. (Note: Another option is to lay the wet towel out on a dish and cover it with plastic wrap. In this manner, a wider variety of seeds can be arranged in separate rows on the damp towel.
Next, write the date and the kind of seed on the bag’s outside with a permanent marker. If you have a seed packet, check it out and make a note of the germination times. Check the seeds in a few days to determine whether any have sprouted based on the average germination times provided on the seed packet.
Check seeds in seven to ten days if there is no packet. If you’re anything like me, you’ll check them daily—probably more than once—just for fun. Remove the paper towel-wrapped seeds from the bag once they have begun to sprout and count how many have done so. Only half of a sprout will probably germinate if it has only grown partially. Don’t start to panic just yet.
Simply scatter the seeds in your container or garden thicker than usual to solve the problem. The University of Illinois Extension Office advises purchasing new seeds if fewer than 70% of the seeds germinate.
Plan to do the germination test just before planting so that seeds can be planted. To teach kids about germination, here is a fun activity for kids called “Garden in a Glove” for the parents and grandparents out there.
Resources required: clear plastic gloves, permanent marker, five different types of seeds, cotton balls, pencil, twist ties, or string. On the glove, use the permanent marker to have the youngster write their name and the project’s date. Each seed variety’s name should be written on a glove finger. Squeeze the extra moisture off the cotton balls after wetting them. Each cotton ball should contain three to four seeds. Fold cotton ball over to enclose seeds.
Use the pencil to press the cotton ball into the fingertip of the glove with the matching label. Blow air into the glove and fasten the glove’s top with a twist knot or string after all the seeded cotton balls have been positioned. Watch for success by hanging the glove in a window or another warm spot. It should take three to five days for the seeds to sprout. Cut the tops off the gloves to remove the cotton balls once they have germinated, then plant the cotton balls with the seeds in the ground.
Can you freeze pea seeds?
Typically, people will only resurrect a topic if they are in a similar circumstance or have helpful advice to share. Given that it has been six years, the OP is probably already aware of the solution and has forgotten about this post.
Even if the seeds will be planted the following year, beans and peas should be frozen in locations where insects can attack the plants in order to eliminate any eggs or larvae. To kill insects, the seeds must be kept at a temperature of about 0 F for several days, which can be achieved in a standalone freezer. In most cases, the ice box atop a refrigerator doesn’t become cold enough; if in question, test it with a thermometer in the freezer.
The main concern for frozen seed storage is excessive seed wetness, which would significantly harm (or kill) the seed when frozen, rather than overdrying. This is especially true for large seeds that require a long time to dry, such beans and peas. The idea put forth by Dlsm to dry seed with an air conditioner makes sense because an air conditioner reduces interior humidity. In the winter, when my indoor humidity is naturally low, I can dry my seeds by simply keeping them open. However, desiccant is the only workable approach to reduce seed moisture to the correct level if indoor humidity cannot be managed.
Silica gel packs made for different uses can be used again, but you won’t be able to gauge their effectiveness. I advise using color-changing desiccant for seed preservation because of this. (This is occasionally available in hobby shops and is used to dry flowers.) Start off with a quantity that is the same weight as the seeds being dried. Repeat the process with new desiccant until the color stays the same if the desiccant changes to indicate moisture saturation. The seed should be dry enough at that stage to store it frozen without needing any more drying. A little amount of color-changing desiccant should also be stored with the seed in a sealed container; this will provide some further protection and serve as a warning if the seal has been broken by moisture.
There is a decent rule of thumb for assessing tiny amounts of beans and peas for adequate dryness in the absence of a method to precisely detect seed moisture. When a seed breaks when struck with a hammer (while wearing eye protection! ), it is completely dry. (For a comparison, try doing this with popcorn.) It requires additional drying if it is simply crushed, flattened, or the fragments stay together.
Actually, unless seeds are exposed to a drying environment for an extended period of time, it is difficult to overdry seeds.
One more point about freezing storage. The container must get to room temperature before being opened after the seeds have been taken out of the freezer. As with a glass of ice water, moisture will condense on the seeds if the container is opened while cold. The seed could fast sprout or rot as a result of that dampness. If the seeds will be utilized over several years, it is a good idea to separate them into several zip-lock envelopes inside the sealed container. This will allow for the rapid removal of a single packet and the quick freezing of the entire container.
