If there is sufficient drainage, the majority of peat- or bark-based growth mixtures are effective. The liners should be inserted into the new container such that the original soil line of the plug is level with the top of the growing medium. The finest quality is obtained when plants are cultivated in greenhouses with high light intensities or in the full sun (greater than 4,000 foot-candles).

I advise farmers to transplant “Lacey Blue” during the late summer of the year before the plants are to be marketed if they are producing 1-gallon or larger-sized containers; this will afford enough time for bulking and will result in fuller, higher-quality plants.

Perovskia are cold-tolerant plants that bloom whether or not the soil has been vernalized. Compared to plants that haven’t gotten a cold treatment, vernalized plants typically have more blooms and greater branching. Plants that have grown larger before a cold period arrive will benefit from vernalization the most (six to nine weeks at 35 to 44 F). Unless they have been vernalized, Russian sage typically needs long day lengths to flower; however, after receiving a cold treatment, they will bloom under any day length. When cultivated at 65 to 68 F after vernalization, perovskia can be coaxed into bloom in 10 or 12 weeks.

Get a hold of some sage

If you are cultivating your own sage, all you need to do is snip off a few healthy, non-flowering sprigs. There is no need to remove entire branches; sprigs that are 4-6 long will do just fine.

Although you can take cuttings at any point during the growth season, the ideal time is as the weather turns chilly and the stems start to get a little woody at the end.
