The Texas Superstar plant initiative is special in that Texas A&M horticulturists identify and enhance the distinctive qualities of already well-known plants to increase their marketability and desirability to gardeners.
Mexican lavender, lilac chaste tree, hemp tree, sage tree, monk’s pepper, Indian spice, or Vitex are other names for Texas Lilac Vitex. Although it originated in China and India, it has long since become naturalized in some parts of the United States. Records show that Vitex has been grown in the United States since 1670.
Vitex is the ideal remedy for a SuperStar, for those of you looking. Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Theophrast all cite the vitex agnus-castus as one of the ancient world’s recognized medicinal herbs. The widespread name “Monk’s Pepper” also alludes to the medieval notion that drinking potions derived from the berries helped monks uphold their chaste vows.
The optimal conditions for vitex growth are full sun and a position with good drainage. It thrives in both acidic and alkaline soil, and it may be grown everywhere in Texas. It thrives in warm, dry climates. Because of its durability, the Texas Department of Transportation plants Vitex in the medians of highways. It is a magnificent plant that attracts butterflies and is deer resistant in that deer won’t eat it, yet if it is allowed to grow to a very great size, they may harm it with their antlers.
Older varieties of Vitex featured tiny flower spikes that were light pink, off-white, lilac, or mauve in color. The majority of the flowers were little and ugly. Horticulturists have lately discovered and put to the test enhanced selections with spikes up to 8 to 12 inches long, like “Montrose Purple,” “LeCompte,” and “Shoal Creek.” These options will all be sold under the brand Texas Lilac Vitex.

The ultimate nectar plant, buddleia or butterfly bush, has sparked renewed attention because to the butterfly frenzy. Unfortunately, most buddleias are unreliable perennials and perform poorly in the bulk of Texas’s landscapes. However, with the right care, the Texas Lilac Vitex could develop into the “buddleia of Texas.”

Where shouldn’t lilac bushes be planted?
Avoid planting lilacs in areas that will receive more than a half-worth day’s of shade because they thrive in full sun. Make sure to give them room to expand when you plant them. To find out the mature plant’s height and spread, read the label on the plant.

Although my wife and I are from Oregon initially, we don’t see any lilacs in Houston. Are lilacs capable of surviving in Southeast Texas?

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center’s goal is to improve native plants, wildflowers, and landscapes’ sustainable usage and protection.
Therefore, even if lilacs could thrive in Houston (they are extremely susceptible to powdery mildew and shed their leaves in hot, humid summers even as far north as Philadelphia), we do not advise planting them. Although they are not native to North America, they are common in the northern states and Canada, and to all Northerners, the scent of them brings back memories of the start of summer. However, they should remain in the north since it is where they belong.
Long before every town had a Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and identical restaurant franchises, Lady Bird moaned, “Why can’t Texas look like Texas?” As a fellow transplant from the north, I can see your desire to have a familiar companion in your garden, but I urge you to learn about and appreciate the many unique native Texas plants that can survive in this often harsh climate.
Although nothing can compare to the scent of a lilac, you may consider Texas Mountain Laurel, a purple blossoming, very fragrant harbinger of spring. It is drought tolerant and needs good drainage because it is native to the Hill Country and not the Houston region. If you choose to plant one, make sure it is situated on a berm or in another raised place with sufficient drainage.

Lilacs are one of the harder garden shrubs in our environment. They can tolerate drought (to a certain extent) and require little maintenance other than removing the spent flower heads immediately after blooming. They are so hardy, in fact, that they continue to identify the locations of historic homesteads all throughout the area decades after the farmhouses have vanished.
The most frequent problem we get around here is lilac bacterial blight, which causes the leaves and branch tips to turn black. This illness typically manifests during the damp and chilly spring months. But it can also show up when plants are stressed by drought, as they have been for the past two years. In the Inland Northwest, we’ve experienced a few tiny instances of it. Under the correct circumstances, the common lilac (Syringa vulgaris) and its varieties, which we all have in our gardens, can be quite vulnerable to it.
The best way to combat the disease is to keep your plants healthy. By removing dense growth, plants’ air circulation will be improved. In the spring, give the plants a little fertilizer. The plants can become overstimulated by fertilizer applied in excess or at the wrong time of year. In order to lessen drought stress, provide consistent water during the driest months. In order to get rid of disease reservoirs lying in the leaves, clean up old leaves in the fall. Last but not least, if you have already had the disease, you can spray the plants with a copper sulfate solution in the early spring to lessen the likelihood of the ailment.
The Master Gardeners’ observations in the clinic, however, don’t fully fit the description of the bacterial blight on lilacs. The leaves appear chlorotic instead. The leaf is a pale yellow-green with a few brown areas, but the veins are still green. This is uncharacteristic of any other disease and is probably brought on by cultural issues with irrigation, fertilization, and drought stress. Due to the two years of drought, the plant’s ability to adequately absorb water and nutrients was likely diminished, especially during the hot weather we had in August. The plant is now starting to retire the extra leaves since it is unable to support its entire canopy of leaves. The plants will most likely recover, but it will require some time and more watering.
The best method to do this is to isolate your plant watering system from your grass sprinkler system. When the weather is dry, like it is in August and September, you need to water the plants frequently and deeply. Simply place a soaker hose on a timer for three to four hours every two weeks and wind it among the plants.
