It is now recommended that tulips only be planted two to four inches deep after Cornell University discovered that bulbs planted deeper than six inches produce less blossoms.
Another common misconception is that adding phosphorus (often in the form of bone meal) encourages root development and increases the number of blooms. The interaction between the bulb’s roots and the soil’s fungi is more effective at drawing phosphorus from the environment than is the bone meal supplement. This root-fungi connection is actually hampered by the addition of bone meal during planting.

For planting holes or beds for flower bulbs, never add top dressings of mint mulch, horse manure, chicken droppings, mushroom compost, other “hot” manures, garden compost, household compost, or commercial soil supplements. They don’t have a pH of zero. These top dressings or soil additives alter the pH of the soil, preventing or delaying root growth and mummifying bulbs. They can go so far as to actually ruin the bulbs. Immature root growth causes limited plant growth, meager foliage, and little to no flowering, if any flowering at all.
Due to insufficient heat production, garden and household compost frequently fails to decompose completely and can serve as a haven for weeds and harmful fungi.
In essence, not everything that is good for tomatoes or roses is also healthy for flower bulbs. It is advisable to perform any necessary soil composition work on the overall planting site or bed rather than in individual bulb planting holes.
