Wild zinnia, also known as prairie zinnia or Rocky Mountain zinnia, is a perennial groundcover that forms a mound and rises 4 to 8 inches high. From mid-summer till frost, the plants are covered in papery yellow blossoms. It prefers hot, sunny places with well-drained soil and does well in rough terrain.
True American natives, zinnias can be found in Mexico, Central America, and the Southwest of the United States. The best-known annual plant is the common zinnia (Zinnia elegans), from which plant breeders have developed an amazing variety of cultivars. There are roughly 17 different species of annuals and perennials.
The wild zinnia is becoming more popular as a garden plant, and it can now be found on a number of lists of Western gardeners’ preferred water-wise plants. About Zinnias

Types of Zinnias

In addition to these shapes, zinnia flowers also occur in “beehive,” “button,” and “cactus” forms. Additionally, the plants themselves come in various heights: taller types function best as a garden bed’s background, while shorter varieties are useful as a border. When to Plant Zinnias

- It should be noted that zinnias can be grown from seed inside if you like. Just make sure to transfer them gently and young.

- Zinnias can tolerate daily temperatures as low as 60F (16C), although a range of 7484F (2328C) is ideal.
- To prolong the flowering time, sow a new crop of seeds every week or so for a few weeks.
How to Plant Zinnias
- Depending on the kind, place plants 4 to 24 inches apart. (Many common kinds are planted 2 feet between rows and 6 inches apart within the row.) For information about each variety, consult the seed packet’s back.
- Plant zinnia seeds no deeper than 1/4 inch.
- The majority of zinnia cultivars will produce seedlings in just 4 to 7 days, but it may take up to two months or more for blooms to appear (depending on planting site and climate).
- To promote air circulation, thin seedlings when they are three inches tall, spacing them 6 to 18 inches apart. As a result, powdery mildew is less likely to grow.
- To promote development and blossoms, keep the soil’s moisture level moderate and apply a mild fertilizer.
- Deadhead zinnias once they have finished blooming to facilitate the development of new blossoms.
- Since zinnias are annuals, they will perish with the first fall hard cold. Let the final blooms of the season fully mature before dispersing their seeds if you want them to reseed.

Do zinnias grow naturally in New England?

Where do marigolds originate?
All but one of the 50 or so species in this genus are native to the American tropics and subtropics, despite the fact that the commonly produced plants are frequently referred to as French marigolds or African marigolds. They belong to the daisy (Asteraceae) family and are primarily erect annuals and perennials. Many species have the distinctive daisy-like flower structure in brilliant golden colors and frequently have ferny, fragrant, deep green leaves. The name of the genus comes from Tages, an Etruscan god and Jupiter’s great-grandson who arose out of plowed ground, alluding to the way marigolds spontaneously sprout from seeds. Marigolds are edible, and the flowers produce a yellow color that is occasionally used in place of saffron.
Where do sunflowers originate?
A global, epoch-spanning, multi-national effort has gone into the development of the commercial sunflower. Native American cultures in North America cultivated the sunflower as a crop for the first time more than 4,500 years ago.
The sunflower was originally a bushy, multiple-headed plant, but Native Americans domesticated it to become a single-stemmed plant with a huge flower.
The crop had a variety of applications, including the manufacturing of flour or meal for bread and cakes. As a snack or when combined with other grains, nuts, and pulses to make a form of granola, seeds were roasted, cracked, and consumed whole.
The first Americans also learned how to extract sunflower oil and use it in cooking.
Archaeologists have demonstrated that sunflower had a number of non-food applications in addition to its importance as a crop for food.
The robust, fibrous stem of the plant was utilized in construction, and its oils and pigments were employed as sunscreen or as the foundation for a purple dye for skin, hair, or textile design.
Up until the arrival of European explorers in North America in 1510, the sunflower remained a mainstay for almost 4,000 years. Large quantities of sunflower seeds were initially brought back to Europe by Spanish seafarers.
But for the following 200 years, Europeans ignored the promise of sunflowers as a food and oil crop. Instead, the strange-looking blossoms spread widely throughout Western Europe as aesthetic plants or, to a lesser extent, as medicinally effective anti-inflammatory plants.
By the turn of the 19th century, sunflower cultivation had expanded throughout the 1700s and had extended throughout Europe, into Russia and Ukraine.
The crop’s capacity to produce oil was first discovered in Russia. However, that development was partially brought about by a stroke of luck and the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Church issued a decree in the 18th century forbidding the consumption of meals produced with various oils and fats during the Lenten season.
The orthodoxy produced a list of prohibited substances to assist churchgoers in adhering to the rule. Sunflower oil was not included on the list, nevertheless.
In the early 1800s, the demand for sunflower oil soared, and the crop’s cultivation area in Russia and Ukraine increased to more than 800,000 hectares.
The market for the crop split into two distinct areas—seed consumption and oilseed—as the acreage increased.
The Russian government set up the first research initiatives in response to this divergence to create crops that suited the needs of the two markets.
In the late 1800s, a massive variation called as the Mammoth Russian was created. It was crammed full of numerous huge achenes, some of whose heads measured more than 50 cm in diameter.
A constant trickle of eastern Europeans had started to immigrate to North America at this point. Russian settlers were among them, and they started importing sunflowers, mostly for use as a high-protein animal feed.
While the US market for sunflower goods was expanding, the year 1886 was significant in the development of the crop as a commercial commodity.
Vasilii Stepanovich Pustovoit, possibly the most significant figure in sunflower breeding, was born on this day.
As soon as he started working in Russia in 1912, Pustovoit gained a reputation as a top research scientist.
He created a program that was centered on separating various desirable features, which were then crossed to create hybrids. The top-performing hybrids were chosen for trans-pollination and breeding to create new commercial types after these were evaluated.
In 1924, the Krasnodar research facility where Pustovoit worked was designated as the experimental selection facility for Russian oilseeds.
Pustovoit oversaw the institute’s breeding division until his passing in 1972, and is recognized for having laid the groundwork for today’s high-oil, high-yield cultivars.
The popularity of the sunflower as an animal feed in the US increased the planted area, and new markets started to develop with the establishment of oil processing units in the middle of the 1920s.
As the sunflower’s popularity grew north of the border, the Canadian government started a breeding effort in 1930.
Following the war, both north and south of the US border, the growing area grew even more, and more farmers started include sunflower in their crop rotations. However, Pustovoit’s Russian breeding program continued to support any performance improvements, and the Canadian government granted permission for the cultivation of the Peredovik cultivar. This seed increased the crop’s profitability by producing large yields and an oil content of roughly 45 percent.
Breeding programs went beyond just yield and oil content by the late 1960s. Targeted characteristics included enhanced disease resistance.
However, the sunflower’s capacity to self-pollinate with its male and female reproductive organs was restricting efforts to produce real hybrids. This suggested that the sunflower’s own pollen was sabotaging attempts to introduce novel features from donor plants.
Then, in 1969, a French scientist by the name of Leclercq made a discovery that would forever alter sunflower breeding.
Leclercq, who was employed by the French Agricultural Institute (INRA), found a technique for cytoplasmic male sterility, a procedure that turns off the male component of the flower. As a result, pollen from a donor sunflower could be put into another sunflower’s still-functioning female reproductive system without contaminating it with genetic material from the plant itself. A US Department of Agriculture scientist by the name of Kinman learned how to turn the male fertility back on in the resulting hybrid a year later, in 1970.
Then, for the first time, breeding programs could produce real commercial hybrids that took advantage of mixed features from various parent plants.
A new era in the creation of traits was sparked by the twin discoveries. Different cultivars with improved disease resistance, larger yields, and other characteristics suited for the confection or oil markets could be sold by seed firms.
These developments happened at a period when people started to become increasingly concerned with their diets’ health. Sunflower oil was shown to be a healthier substitute for the commonly utilized saturated fats in the 1970s research. When people began using items made from sunflower oil, especially in Europe, demand quickly outpaced supply and the crop grew rapidly.
After palm, soybean, and rapeseed, sunflower is presently the world’s fourth-most significant oil crop due to the market’s sustained growth over the previous 25 years.
With Russia and the Ukraine dominating worldwide production, market developments have caused the primary region of production for the crop to shift back to eastern Europe. Together, these two nations produced more than 22 million tonnes of the 47.9 million tonnes of sunflower seeds produced globally in 2017.
The Ukraine produced 12.24 million tonnes compared to Russia’s 10.48 million tonnes, according to the most recent FAO statistics (2017).
