Petunias with orange flowers, often known as orange petunias or A1-DFR petunias, are genetically altered plants that have a transgene from maize in their DNA. The petunias were developed initially in a 1987 experiment at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne. They were then released into the wild, but they were not made available for sale. Botanist Teemu Teeri found orange petunias in Helsinki in 2015, which prompted a regulatory response known as the “petunia carnage of 2017,” in which plant vendors were instructed to kill the altered petunia plants rather than sell them. The sale of orange petunias in the US was authorized by the US Department of Agriculture in January 2021.
Are there any petunias in orange?
The USDA and APHIS have declared the official non-regulated status of the A1-DFR gene-containing petunias, also known as “orange petunias,” in response to petition 19-099-01p from Westhoff. These and future A1-DFR petunias may be sold without limitations thanks to the move from regulated to non-regulated status, but it’s vital to understand that this does not apply to other genetically modified petunias. All of the A1-DFR petunias available today were traditionally bred, and their lineage can be traced back to the original occurrence in the late 1980s. Since that time, no further genetic modifications have been done.
Although Manfred Mehring-Lemper and Diro Terefe Ayana, two breeders from Westhoff, were the driving force behind the multi-year effort to bring these back to American consumers, Westhoff wants it to be understood that all varieties that contain the A1-DFR gene can be legally sold, regardless of the company that developed the variety. This strategy is in line with Westhoff’s long-standing corporate purpose to ensuring that unique breeding is introduced to the market, without limitations, in order to support a vibrant, competitive, and forward-thinking floriculture business.

Petunias are delicate annuals whose seeds are killed by the winter, and nobody eats them. Nevertheless, because GE petunias are prohibited by European Union law, Finland’s Food Safety Authority, Evira, has commanded the removal and destruction of all orange petunia plants and seeds from the market. The alleged safety of these petunias is also contested by the British watchdog group GM Freeze. In an effort to eradicate corn borers, corn genes were altered to add Bacillus thuringiensis, however this unintentionally led to the eradication of Monarch butterflies.
The orange petunia may no longer be offered by some large seed producers. Nevertheless, according to the USDA, there is no evidence that these plants would harm other plants, therefore they won’t need to be regulated. (This same justification led to the deregulation of GE Arctic apples.)

What makes orange petunias prohibited?
Countless petunia plants have started to be destroyed, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), after government experts determined that they were genetically modified (GM) to have vibrant orange, red, and purple blooms. However, GE organisms require specific permissions to be sold in the United States notwithstanding the agency’s claim that the flowers pose no damage to the environment or to human health.
The flowers were either imported or bred by distributors without their knowledge. According to a statement released by USDA, on May 2, the German-based horticulture company Selecta Klemm told USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) that it had imported a GE orange petunia. (Petunias are not orange by nature.) The USDA tested many different petunia varieties as a result, and the results showed that this particular variety and several others are definitely GE and fit the criteria for being classified as a regulated commodity under APHIS regulations, the department said. “Several distributors have already voluntarily stopped selling and destroyed GE petunias.”
The USDA claims that nine undesirable types have already been confirmed despite further testing. As follows:

Petunias also “have no sexually compatible wild relatives in the United States, are not plant pests, and are not categorized as noxious weeds,” according to the FDA, which also claims that “consumers who may have purchased GE petunias need take no action.” Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe, South America, and Australia were the original home countries of the flowers.
The finding in the United States comes after similar ones involving genetically altered petunias in Finland and the European Union, where it is similarly prohibited to produce and sell GE plants without special permissions. On April 27, Finnish authorities prohibited the sale of GE orange petunias, and the European Union has launched a probe. The GE plants are currently being tracked down by numerous European breeders and distributors so they can be removed from the market and destroyed.
The first report of the American probe was made public by Greenhouse Management News on May 14. Michelle Simakis and Karen E. Varga observed that “[t]he involved plants were not properly registered with the USDA as GE plants since no one seemed to realize that they contained or were bred with GE plant material.” Breeders assert that they believe GE material entered the petunia breeding chain in the past but went unreported by breeders who employ traditional techniques to grow plants.
According to Steve Wiley, general manager of American Takii, a horticultural company situated in Salinas, California, “I suppose [the GE plant] sprung up during an age of innocence and sustained itself because no one even knew to look for it or fathomed that it was in the germplasm chain.”
The petunias aren’t the first time a GE plant has appeared in an unauthorized location. GE maize, soybeans, and other crops are occasionally found in countries or locations where they are not permitted, raising questions about whether there is enough oversight. The United States is in the process of updating its laws governing biotechnology products. Plants having DNA from a sexually compatible species and DNA alterations also feasible using more traditional chemical or radiation-based techniques would be exempt from regulation, according to a draft set of USDA regulations released in January. The petunias’ unusual color may have been caused by a gene from maize, according to a spokeswoman for the Finnish agency that regulates food safety, Evira, who talked with The Telegraph.
