The box elder (Acer negundo), which, like the poplar, is a quickly growing, weak-wooded tree that appears to show up uninvitedly, is a notable exception to the general rule that most maples are insect pollinated.

How can you know if there are issues with your trees? Look at the descriptions of the blossoms in a serious tree book, such as Michael Dirr’s “Manual of Woody Landscape Plants” (Stipes Publishing Company, 1998). If a flower is said to be perfect, it signifies that it has both male and female reproductive organs. No issue. When something is said to be monoecious, it signifies that both sexes are found on the same tree, which typically means that hay fever sufferers can safely consume it.
