Though I would want to stick to the natural plants of the area, will any cultivar I may find nearby be suitable? Let’s first define the distinction between rhododendrons and azaleas. According to “Azaleas and/or Rhododendrons,” an article from Virginia Cooperative Extension, the key distinction is that an azalea contains five stamens while a rhododendron has ten. Rhododendrons grow larger than azaleas and have larger leaves, blooms, and foliage. Rhododendrons are completely evergreen, whereas azaleas can be either deciduous or evergreen. Nevertheless, rhododendrons and azaleas are both included in the genus Rhododendron by botanical taxonomists.
