Are Hydrangeas Pollinators

When it comes to pollinator plants, hydrangeas are not often the first thing that come to mind. However, lacecap types like Little Quick Fire, which conspicuously exhibit their fertile florets that are rich in nectar and pollen, do a great job of generating buzz. Little Quick Fire is also a panicle hydrangea, which requires little maintenance and thrives in both hot and cold areas. Even though mophead kinds—those that produce the large, full, fluffy flower heads—are typically regarded as more showy, choosing lacecap variants guarantees that you’re also improving the aesthetics of your landscape.

Are bees drawn to hydrangeas?

I recently got the chance to assess a university campus for bee-friendly landscape plants. Large trees and sprawling lawns made up the majority of the campus, creating a plush and welcoming blanket of greenery that encircled tall buildings and trees like draped velvet. I’m delighted to report that it provided a quiet retreat for students and many families using or passing through the campus with young children.

The campus had so many trees that they formed an almost closed canopy, giving the impression that the trees had given permission for structures to be placed amid them for our benefit.

On the university grounds, a variety of trees including oaks, American elms, ash, mimosas, catalpas, mulberries, willows, golden chain trees, lindens, flowering crab apples, hawthorns, cedar, fir, pine, horse chestnuts, honey locusts, and eastern redbuds flourished in harmony and profusion. Many of the huge shrubs and trees were pollinator-friendly.

Willows were the first bee-friendly trees to blossom in the spring, and they were soon followed by hawthorn, horse chestnut, red buds (both eastern and western), and flowering crab apples.

Up to the end of July, golden chain tree, honey locust, linden, catalpa, mimosa, and linden all produced continuous tree bloom.

As long as there are other pollinator-friendly plants blooming before and after them, each tree holds a significant amount of floral resources during bloom time and is beneficial to pollinators; bees require sustained floral resources during the growing season.

Conifers, ash, elm, and other wind-pollinated trees are generally unwelcoming to bees.

On campus, hydrangeas were widely planted, so it was fascinating to see which ones were good for pollinators and which weren’t. Although we don’t typically think of plants as being friendly to bees, some are actually quite alluring to bees while others are not.

There was a fairly lengthy planting of lacecap hydrangeas on the east side of a sizable structure. The more popular mop-head hydrangea macrophylla hortensis is unsuitable for bees since its flowers are all sterile and, while attractive to humans, provide neither pollen nor nectar for bees.

Although hydrangeas’ fruitful blossoms are little, unimportant, and not particularly eye-catching, bees are very drawn to them. A large core cluster of fertile flowers is surrounded by stunning sterile flowers on lacecap hydrangeas.

They combine grace and delicacy with flowers that are friendly to pollinators, giving you the best of both worlds. These beautiful flowers are available in a variety of hues, including white, blue, and purple.

Hydrangea aspera, sometimes known as rough-leaf hydrangea, is a too rarely planted lacecap variety. Zone 9 locations with maritime influences, enough water, and annual composting are best suited for its use. This lovely big shrub, which grows to a height of 8 feet and flowers in the late summer, needs filtered shade.

A ring of light purple sterile blooms surrounds the bright purple, extremely fragrant fertile flowers. Both we and the bees adore its blossoms.

The appeal of the various hydrangea paniculata varieties to bees varies. The elongated, white flower heads typically contain a mixture of viable and sterile blooms.

Some varieties have non-scented, primarily sterile flowers whereas others have highly fragrant, bee-friendly blossoms. All are garish.

It is better to visit a nursery and distinguish between plants with a lot of bees visiting them and others that are not aromatic. The plants can range in size from three feet to roughly six or eight feet. Numerous cultivars exist.

Native to the eastern United States, hydrangea arborescens is frequently planted along the coast or in regions that receive a lot of coastal impact. ‘Annabelle’ is a popular cultivar.

It features very enormous umbels of white flowers that resemble mopheads, but each blossom is somewhat smaller than the mophead varieties, giving the flowering plant a softer and more elegant appearance.

The leaves are a brighter shade of green, much smaller, and less waxy. Large flower heads and weak stems can cause flowers to occasionally topple down.

While cultivars like “Haas Halo” have lacecap blooms made up of both fertile and sterile flowers and are exceedingly spectacular and bee-friendly, this cultivar only has sterile flowers. H. arborescens has exclusively viable blooms in its wild form. The scent of hydrangeas can help determine whether they are bee-friendly.

Do hydrangeas attract pollinators?

The aesthetic appeal of a garden is no longer sufficient. It must also be visually appealing. The local ecosystem’s food chains are more successfully maintained the more we accept insects. In particular, we help our own food supply when we care for pollinators.

Get rid of the pesticides first. Put your faith in nature to regulate pests. Then add the features that make gardens beautiful: a succession of nectar- and pollen-rich blooms from the last to the first frost, as well as plants that serve as hosts for caterpillars of moths and butterflies.

Most pollinators are not particularly choosy. Some pollinators, like honeybees, only work with one species at a time, which makes them effective pollinators of food crops. Others eat from the buffet’s entire selection. Even though many pollinator species are armed with stingers, when they’re out feeding in the garden, they’re friendly associates willing to cooperate with you and each other.

Spring is simple. Everything that grows is essentially fair game. Beekeepers highly respect dandelions as the first dependable food supply following a long winter. Make room for them in your grass. The same is true for clover, which was only recognized as a weed after being unintentionally targeted by weed killers.

All kinds of bees, wasps, moths, and butterflies are drawn to the following things:

  • Ajuga (Ajuga and cvs., Zones 39)
  • Catmint (Nepeta and cvs., Zones 38)
  • Hyssop anise (Agastache foeniculum, Zones 411)
  • Lavender (Lavandula and cvs., Zones 410)
  • Mountain thyme (Pycnanthemum and cvs., Zones 48)
  • Calamint (Calamintha nepeta subsp. nepeta, Zones 49)
  • Plants of the Lamiaceae (mint family) are effective pollinator magnets.

These plants have tubular flower spires that bloom all summer, attracting hummingbirds and bumblebees alike:

  • Honey balm (Monarda and cvs., Zones 49)
  • Agastache, such as Mexican giant hyssop (Agastache and cvs., Zones 411) (Agastache mexicana, Zones 710)
  • Salvia species, including blue anise sage (Salvia and cvs., Zones 511). (Salvia guaranitica, Zones 710).

There is a secret weapon that hydrangeas (Hydrangea spp. and cvs., Zones 49) use. They only provide pollen and nectar from considerably smaller viable florets, yet they attract pollinators with enormous, showy flowers. Some mophead cultivars, like “Nikko Blue,” are just for appearance. Because lacecaps (H. macrophylla normalis, Zones 59) feature a platform of pollen-rich fertile blooms surrounded by prettier sterile sepals, bees and butterflies will appreciate your choice. Also take into account local species like oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia, Zones 59) and smooth hydrangea (H. arborescens, Zones 39), both of which have attractive pompoms and panicles of fertile and infertile florets.

In the aster or composite family, fertility may also be given up for the extra-showy appearance of extra petals. Bees and butterflies can get nectar and pollen from the single-flowered purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea, Zones 39), as well as cultivars like “Virgin” and “Green Envy.” Additionally, throughout the fall and winter, their seed heads draw goldfinches.

Include caterpillar host plants in your garden layout to make it truly hospitable to butterflies. The only plant that monarch caterpillars eat is milkweed (Asclepias spp. and cvs., Zones 39). Any garden arrangement is made brighter by the two-foot-tall, beautiful orange blossoms of the butterfly weed (A. tuberosa, Zones 49). While ‘Ice Ballet’ blooms white, Swamp Milkweed (A. incarnata, Zones 39) is higher at 3 to 4 feet and bubblegum pink. Both species are hardy perennials that self-sow native to the area. For fritillary butterflies, the violet family (Viola spp. and cvs., Zones 39), the spice bush (Lindera benzoin, Zones 49), and native grasses provide additional hosts (for skipper butterflies).

Don’t simply believe me; entire books have been written about this (my favorite is Attracting Native Pollinators by the Xerces Society). Make your garden your teacher. Your garden will be more inviting to pollinators and hence more beautiful.

Are butterflies or birds attracted to hydrangeas?

Pick hydrangea cultivars with more fertile compared to infertile blossoms to draw butterflies and other pollinators. Butterflies and other pollinators are definitely drawn to my Quickfire Hydrangeas. They were initially planted roughly 13 years ago, and they have since gotten pretty big.

Are bees attracted to panicle hydrangeas?

Panicle hydrangeas never fail to fill your landscape with an abundance of color. They establish their blooms on new growth in the spring, protecting this year’s crop of buds from the harsh winters. Starting in the middle of July, panicle hydrangeas produce abundant clusters of white or creamy-white blooms after a spring covered in beautiful, bright green foliage. As late summer transitions into October, many other summer bloomers are starting to lose their vibrant colors. Depending on the variety, the blossoms gradually turn pink or lime-green, then colors of strawberry or burgundy. When the first frost hits, they become an appealing tawny-brown and stay on the plant, adding lovely texture to the winter landscape. Furthermore, unlike the well-known pink or blue mophead hydrangeas, none of these color changes are caused by a unique soil chemistry; rather, they take place as the evenings get cooler in the late summer and early fall.

A Perfect Fit for Any Sunny Space

There is a panicle hydrangea for every requirement in your landscape, whether it be a gorgeous anchor for a perennial bed, a magnificent blooming hedge along a border, a natural living screen, or a tiny splash of color in a smaller corner. Some cultivars grow large—five to eight feet tall and wide—and can fill a large area with several lovely blooms. However, some, like “Little Lime” or “Bobo,” are significantly smaller and can fit almost anyplace.

Even panicle hydrangeas in the shape of trees can be found, with their stunning blooms and leaves perched high above a single trunk. Even the smallest places may accommodate the lovely hydrangea blossoms thanks to tree hydrangeas. There is a panicle hydrangea to fit any landscape design thanks to the variety of form and function.

There are several designs for the clustered panicle blossoms as well. Some cultivars produce clusters that are more compactly packed and rounder, like the traditional mophead hydrangea that is common in formal gardens. Others, like Quick Fire and the tiny Little Quick Fire, have more open, airy blossoms that blend in well with the local vegetation in a setting that is influenced by nature. Additionally, some, such as Pinky Winky, develop large, highly conical clusters that resemble enormous aster flowers.

An Easy-Going Personality

Hydrangeas in a panicle are not picky. They won’t require much more care from us if they are placed in a location with four to five hours of sunlight every day, well-drained soil, and a little mulch to retain moisture in the summer. Pruning is also simple. A trim in late winter or very early spring won’t have any impact on the flowers of the next year as long as you avoid doing so when the buds are emerging in the spring and summer. Additionally, panicle hydrangeas are resilient enough to survive many of our harsh winters.

A Benefit to the Garden Community

Most harmful insects, including the vile Japanese beetle, seem to disregard panicle hydrangeas. However, panicle hydrangeas are even better because they draw beneficial insects that prey on some of the pests that may be harming your other garden plants. Soldier beetles and their larvae love the pollen and nectar from panicle hydrangeas; these voracious predators eat cucumber beetles, aphids, spider mites, and other pests that harm plants. The steel-blue cricket hunter parasitoid wasp, which feeds on the nectar of hydrangeas before employing insects like crickets and cutworms as incubators for its eggs, is attracted to panicle hydrangeas. A variety of bees, butterflies, and other significant pollinators are drawn to your landscape by the lovely white and pink blossoms.

Do hydrangeas entice wasps or bees?

The nectar and pollen-rich flowers of hydrangeas draw a variety of bee, fly, and wasp species as well as other flying pollinators. They don’t draw houseflies, hornets, yellowjackets, or the majority of predatory wasps because these insects are generally carnivores that eat carrion or trash and rarely consume nectar or pollen.

One of the main reasons that flowering plants exist and why most flowers are as beautiful as they are is because they attract pollinators. The color, form, and shape of a flower are created by nature to draw the type of animal she wants to help with fertilization. If you don’t want the pollinators, you must get rid of the plants, or at the very least, the flowers, or move them to an area where they won’t bother you.

How do hydrangeas affect wildlife?

There have been a lot of comments recently that criticize hydrangeas. They are frequently regarded as tasteless, bloated, and the domain of old-fashioned shrubberies. When a fan sent Madonna a bouquet, she is said to have expressed her hatred for them. There are three mophead hydrangeas (hydrangea macrophylla) and a climbing hydrangea in my current garden (Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris). I didn’t like the bright neon pink of the mopheads at first, and I didn’t even notice the climber hidden behind the border. But over the past few years, I’ve grown to value them for a variety of reasons and have continued to acquire more.

The route is framed by these mopheads. They begin as green bracts, grow into vivid pink, and then fade and dry into brown flower heads. They completely enclose the steps leading to the garden. These hydrangeas are at the ideal location because they need a lot of water. They have access to plenty of water thanks to the patio’s runoff. I give them banana peels and vegetable peelings to eat. This provides them with food and a mulch to keep the water in.

The vivid color takes up a lot of room with little effort and is visible from above.

I don’t have to do any maintenance on my hydrangeas, aside from the previously mentioned watering requirements, and I’m rewarded with a consistent burst of color each year. I let the flower heads on over the winter and, in the spring, I trim back just the area behind the flower heads. I next remove a few of the more seasoned stems. Given that I’ve had fantastic displays for several years running, this seems to work well for me. You can manipulate the pH of the soil to change the color of hydrangeas from pink to blue or from blue to pink, but this seems like a pointless endeavor because they will eventually revert. These, however, need little effort in other respects. They thrive in either shade or sunlight as long as they receive adequate water.

Nearly all of the hydrangea varieties in my garden have protracted flowering times. I keep a lot of shrubs in the garden so they can bloom for a week or two. The hydrangeas provide joy for months.

The flower heads turn brown in the fall and, if left standing, provide a strong structural foundation for the garden.

The benefits of hydrangeas to animals are consistently evaluated as being poor. This has always struck me as odd because the mopheads are always covered in various insects. They were completely infested by silver Y moths the previous year.

However, the literature claims that the mopheads are mainly sterile, thus the flowers aren’t providing the pollinators with many advantages. Each type of flower has a different fecundity. Mine might be more valuable because it still has a lot of life in it. However, I have a sneaking notion that I ought to feel a little bad about the insects’ wasteful travel to these places for little to no reward.

My goal to attract wildlife to my garden has conflicted with this. Although I adore hydrangeas, they take up a lot of area and don’t do much for the animals. However, some types continue to aid animals, according to some study. The RHS Plants for Pollinators describes Hydrangea paniculata as useful, with more fertile flowers found on Kyushu, Big Ben, Floribunda, and Brussels Lace. Unfortunately, I only have limelight with viable flowers at the tip. Nevertheless, I’ve observed a lot of butterflies stopping for lengths of time. If they weren’t benefiting in some way, I doubt they would have stopped for so long. More information about fertility is listed in the RHS trials.

A lot of the lacecaps had fruitful flowers, as I also found out. Pollinators receive no benefits from the outer ring of larger blooms, but they do from the inner ring of smaller flowers.

Because of their short height and thin stems, hydrangeas don’t provide many advantages for birds. Although they are unsuitable for nesting, sparrows sit on mine to scan the garden. My hydrangeas’ understory, though, is very vibrant. I maintain a few logs underneath to provide woodlice and beetles a place to live. Because the leaves block the light from reaching the ground, only a few plants can grow beneath. However, the widespread soaking they get keeps the ground wet enough for frogs. Recently, I’ve had to clear up builder’s grime a few times, and each time I did, I startled a swarm of frogs. Although I can’t contest that hydrangeas have a high value to animals, they do have some advantages.

The only exception is the climbing hydrangea. The little florets are wonderful for small bees and hoverflies, and it offers a fair level of cover for a variety of species.

The mophead hydrangeas come to mind for many people when they think of hydrangeas, but there are actually a lot more varieties available. Cones of lime green, white, pink, and purple are available from the paniculata. The climbing hydrangea provides a dependable climber that may elegantly cover fences or houses with leaves without much assistance because it generally finds its own path. More delicate flowers can be found on the lacecaps. The oakleaf has wonderful big leaves and lovely white blossoms. The award-winning runaway bride’s more recent advancements provide a variety with a mass of blooms suitable to a pot for a display with a lengthy season of fascination. Everyone has options, and there are a variety of situations.
