Echinacea purpurea, also known as coneflowers, is a herb and an ornamental plant. It can be found growing in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 8. The vibrant purple blossoms bring brightness to gardens in the summer and fall. If they are let to mature, they will form lovely cone-shaped seed heads that draw birds and provide winter interest. Another essential component in several herbal tea blends comes from coneflowers. Even though the entire plant can be consumed, herbal tea is most frequently made with the leaves and flower buds.

Nasturtiums

The leaves taste similar to black tea and are suitable for use in tea. The rose flavor is strongest in the rosebuds. Use them dried to flavor tea or other foods. Additionally, you can gather rose petals to use as a garnish, an ingredient in honey, an addition to salads, and much more.

The kind, color, and characteristics of the soil will all affect how strong the flavor is. The flavor is more noticeable the darker the petals. All types of roses can be eaten, but make sure to remove the bitter white part of the petals before eating.

Last but not least, rose hips offer more vitamin C than oranges and are rich in antioxidants. They are a little less palatable but have a tart crab apple flavor. This hardy ornamental is a landscape favorite since it blooms profusely and ornamentally. Daylilies bloom from spring to summer and come in a variety of yellow, red, orange, purple, and white hues. A perennial, plant in late spring or early fall. They thrive in zones 3 through 9, love all types of soil, and need full light.

Chive

Allium (family of onions) flower blossoms are all edible. Usually, they have a milder flavor than the leaf. Chive flowers have delicate purple petals and a wonderful onion flavor. Harvest the blooms and foliage simultaneously, then use the blooms in salads or a wonderful chive vinaigrette.

Plant chives in the early spring for a yield in the late spring or early summer. Since they prefer the cool weather, they thrive in the spring and fall while going dormant in the summer. Plant your chives in wet, drained soil that receives some to full light. Zones 3-9 are ideal for chive growth.

Echinacea

The herbaceous perennial plant echinacea, also referred to as purple coneflower, has four species and six variants that are all native to North America. Distinguishing Features

Flowers

The only coneflower genus that most people are familiar with by name is the Echinacea one because of its reputation as a medicinal plant.

Flower:

A single flower with 15 to 20 pink to light purple rays (petals) that are each 3/4 to 11/2 inches long and 1/4 to 1/3 inch diameter and have three notched teeth at the tip can be found at the end of a sturdy, hairy stalk. As they mature, rays sag and curve under as they spread out and rise. Large round to conical orangish brown disk in the middle is covered in tiny brown disk flowers that have yellow pollen. Usually, a plant has one to several flowering stalks.

Leaves and stem:

The majority of the leaves are basal, while the bottom part of the stem has stem leaves that are widely spread and alternately attached. Lower leaves have long, narrow, up to 8-inch stalks that are 1/2 to 1 inch wide, and as they climb the stem, they get shorter and lose their stalks. There are three distinct veins along the length, and the edges are toothless. The stems and leaves have rough, hairy surfaces. Stems may have purple or green undertones.

Notes:

Although it is not a common species in the nursery industry, narrow-leaved purple coneflower is a native of western sandy grassland and is frequently offered by native seed dealers. This plant has similar leaves to Echinaceae pallida (Pale Purple Coneflower), but its ray petals are only about 1/8 inch diameter and up to 3 inches long. According to some references, this plant is a western variant of that plant. Eastern Purple Coneflower (E. purpurea) contains similar flowers to E. angustifolia, but its lanceolate leaves are shorter, broader, and extend all the way up the stem. Only one of these three native coneflowers, E. angustifolia, is indigenous to Minnesota, but the other two thrive here and are frequently sold at native plant markets. The wildflower trade also carries E. tennesseensis, an eastern variety from the central Tennessee forest glades.

What region of the coneflower is utilized medicinally?

Description

A perennial, E. purpurea with drooping rays that range in color from lavender to pink and a brownish central disk that contains numerous spiny seeds. The Greek word echinos, which means hedgehog in allusion to the bristly seed tops, served as the inspiration for the genus name Echinacea. Flowers can be found on a single stem, and the plant has smooth stems that are 2 to 5 feet tall. From April until September, the flowers are in bloom. The lancolate, ovate, green leaves have a rough texture and serrated or dentate margins.

Due to the numerous conventional and contemporary medical applications of Echinacea purpurea, numerous plant components are utilized to variable degrees. All parts of the flower—flowers, leaves, stems, and roots—are employed in medical procedures.

Traditional Uses

Numerous ailments have been treated using E. purpurea. The primary focus of this plant’s traditional usage has been its ability to reduce inflammation, which can occur anywhere or in any situation, including on the skin or as a result of an immunological response. Herbal tea made from the blossoms is supposed to strengthen the immune system. The herb has traditionally been used to treat colds, infections, wounds, ulcers, and inflammatory skin conditions (Van Wyk et.al., 2004). Echinacea purpurea is utilized as an anti-venom in India, while it is also used to treat inflammation in Italy (Ross, 1999).

Research

Echinacea angustifolia, rather than Echinacea purpurea, was used in the genus’ early medicinal use. Even in 1923, when at least ten out of 700 doctors mentioned using Echinacea to treat influenza, doctors continued to advocate its usage (Brinker, 2013). Taking significant doses of E. angustifolia (130–1750 mg), often peaking after just one day, caused individuals to have an increase in leukocyte count, according to a 1934 study at the Eclectic Medical College (Brinker, 2013). German researchers contributed to part of the fall in the use of E. angustifolia in medicine by demonstrating that the extract only mildly inhibited gram-positive bacteria like Streptococcal and Staphylococcus aureus (Brinker, 2013).

While E. angustifolia was the subject of the majority of early investigations on the survivability of Echinaeca species, Dr. John King’s Eclectic American Dispensary, published in 1853, highlighted E. purpurea’s potential medical applications (Brinker, 2013). Despite the roots not being allowed at the time, a German Commission authorized the use of E. purpurea liquid in 1989 as a “supportive treatment for persistent respiratory and urinary infections as well as wound healing” (Brinker, 2013).

Recent investigations have demonstrated the immunostimulatory properties of this plant (Crellin, 1990). In order to determine whether utilizing Echinacea for the common cold and associated events was effective, a significant meta-analysis of previous research was conducted in 2007. (Brinker, 2013). After this meta-analysis, significant decreases in the frequency and duration of sickness were observed (Brinker, 2013). An investigation into E. purpurea’s impact on the common cold was conducted in 2012. In this study, individuals who took Echinacea extract experienced a substantial reduction in recurrent infections compared to those who took ibuprofen (Jamal et.al, 2012; Brinker, 2013).
