Spider mites (Tetranynchus utricae Koch) feed on the leaves of plants like fiddle leaf figs, where they induce discoloration and leaf loss as well as their own survival. Due to the pests’ speedy reproduction and capacity to spread to other plants, it is crucial to deal with spider mite incursions as soon as possible.

To get rid of the spider mites on your fiddle leaf figs, spray them with cold water from a hose, paying special attention to the undersides of the leaves where they hide. For maximum results, use this cure three times each week. Alternatively, mist the plant with neem oil to kill the spider mites.

Webbing

How to Identify Spider Mites

Spider Mite Eggs

Spider Mites

Spider mites come in a few different varieties, but the red-brown variety is the one I frequently find on my Fiddle Leafs. Although they are smaller than 1mm in size, you might be able to see them moving on the leaves. They can also be recognized by examining a leaf with your hand or a piece of paper towel. They are the reddish-brown smudges on the paper towel.

Spider Mite Webs

The webs are also tiny because the mites are. Look for them where the leaves meet the stem or even inside the little dimplings where the veins on the leaves run.

How to Treat Spider Mites on a Fiddle Leaf Fig

I’ve dealt with at least three spider mite outbreaks, so I think I know how to handle them very well now. I’ve discovered that it’s crucial to be thorough with the procedure and to adhere to the follow-up deadlines to prevent things from spiraling out of control once more.

Step One:

Bring your plant collection outside, and give it a good hose-down. Consider doing this in the shower if you are unable to take them outside.

Make sure to thoroughly rinse each leaf, front and back, as you move from the top to the bottom of the plant.

Step Two:

Create a mixture of neem oil and water in a spray bottle once the plants have begun to slightly dry up from the rain. An environmentally beneficial substance called neem oil is frequently used to keep plants free of pests. In a 500mL spray bottle, you should only need a few milliliters, but check the box for precise numbers.

From top to bottom and on the front and back of the leaves, mist the plants with the solution. Make sure to spray each leaf until it is dripping with water. Even though it might be a little tedious, it’s best to do it right.

Don’t wipe the solution off the plants; instead, let them drip dry. Your plants can then be brought inside once more.

Step Three:

You should repeat the Neem Oil spray procedure 4-5 days after the initial treatment since spider mites proliferate quickly. As a result, the second solution will be used to treat any mites or eggs that were missed the first time and have since hatched.

After another 4-5 days, you might wish to administer the therapy a third time just to be safe. If you think you caught the outbreak in time, you might also simply keep a check on your plants.

General Tips for Treating Spider Mites

Don’t worry if you discovered spider mites on a fiddle leaf fig. Your collection should be free of the issue with prompt and thorough treatment of your plants.

Make sure you still have at least one follow-up treatment, even if you believe you have everything under control! The mites are so tiny that it’s always possible that a few may go unnoticed, reproduce swiftly, and the problem will recur.

I think the mites might develop resistance to your treatment method as well. Therefore, if you don’t follow the follow-up periods and have to treat them repeatedly, the remedy can stop working as well. For optimum results, follow the technique carefully the first time.

I also treat all the neighboring plants at once, or my entire collection. This is due to the ease of spider mite dissemination. If you only treat your main plant, other mites may continue to reproduce and spread throughout your collection.

Perhaps, like me when I was a beginning gardener, you witnessed entire plants decimated in a matter of weeks before realizing too late that they had been ravaged by a spider mite infestation.

You probably understand what I’m talking about if you’ve ever had to deal with spider mites in your garden. Even so, you may have thought to yourself, “Can my plants recover from this?

I have some good news for you as someone who has spent a decent amount of time combating spider mites and studying what works best when it comes to controlling these garden pests:

If adequate time and care are given to both treatment and prevention, plants can recover from spider mite infestations. Spider mite populations can be significantly reduced while plants are being treated with insecticidal soap and oil sprays, giving plants time to recover.

So, the good news is that. But here’s the disclaimer: You can rid your plants of spider mites, but it’s not going to be simple. If you follow the four-step procedure I’ve outlined below, you’ll be well on your way to eradicating your plants of spider mites, though it will frequently take at least two weeks of concentrated effort, careful attention, and a regular fertilizer program.

What method gets rid of spider mites on plants the quickest?

Plant cleaning. Spider mites that are visible can be eliminated by using an alcohol and water solution. Pour a solution containing 1 cup of alcohol and 30 ounces of water into the spray container. Spray the leaves thoroughly on both sides, then use a paper towel to dry them off.

How can I quickly get rid of spider mites?

Testing was done to see how harmful pepper extracts were to spider mites. Approximately 45% of adult spider mites were destroyed by these peppers:

  • the bell pepper
  • Jalapenos
  • Chile
  • chilly peppers

Spider mites are also repelled by other pepper cultivars, including Bishop’s crown and lemon drop peppers.

Hot pepper repellant is available in stores, online, or you can build your own.

Other home remedies

  • Dish soap: To get rid of spider mites, mix 3 teaspoons of dish soap with 1 gallon of water, according to the Oregon State University Extension program. Spray the soapy water on the infected plant leaves once a week or as required using a spray bottle.
  • Rubbing alcohol: You can kill spider mites with the rubbing alcohol you have lying about your home. Cotton balls can be used to clean infected houseplants’ leaves by soaking them in rubbing alcohol. After letting the plants soak in the dish soap or rubbing alcohol for a few hours, thoroughly rinse the leaves with water.
  • Any spider mites that may have escaped the effects of homemade repellents can be washed away with the use of a garden hose. Spider mites can reappear after each rinse, so washing them away is only a temporary fix.

Neem oil can be helpful in getting rid of hazardous fungus, as we previously indicated, but it is mostly utilized as an all-natural insecticide on fiddle leaf figs and other plants.

Insecticide

You can use neem oil in the same manner as you would when applying it as an insecticide to treat and prevent certain fungal illnesses (we’ll teach you how to do this in a moment). When it comes to protecting your instrument from hazardous pests and illnesses, this is a potent one-two punch!

Is Neem Oil Safe for Plants?

Neem oil is typically harmless for plants, including your fiddle, but avoid using it when the sun is at its brightest and warmest because it can make the leaves of your fiddle somewhat more photosensitive and cause burning. The optimum time to apply a neem oil solution is first thing in the morning, when the sun is mild and indirect.

Is Need Oil Safe for Pets?

Keep your dogs away from your violin after treating until the leaves are dry because pure neem oil can be irritating to the stomach if consumed and can irritate the eyes and skin if directly exposed. (You should probably spray outside anyhow; neem oil has a little garlicky odor that you might not enjoy inside.)

Neem oil is safe as it dries and decomposes because it doesn’t leave a harmful residue buildup behind. Its popularity as an organic pesticide and fungicide is due in part to this. While solely killing dangerous insects, it is safe for wildlife and beneficial insects.

Is Neem Oil Organic?

Yes! For both indoor and outdoor gardeners, neem oil is a highly effective, natural pesticide. It has been used to protect crops from insects in India for countless years and is still a crucial component of organic farming today.

Are there spider mites in the soil?

Spider mites will infest both the soil and the plants in your garden if the earth is dry, as it has been recently in most gardens in Guelph. It can be tempting to apply a pesticide to the soil to quickly eradicate spider mites, but doing so would be a serious rookie error.

Millions of living things inhabit the soil, many of which are advantageous to the mites and even act as predators. You kill the good with the evil when you cover the ground in insecticide. In fact, this can have the reverse effect of what you wanted because the mites will suddenly have less predators, which will allow their populations to grow even more uncontrollably.

The spider mite’s nemesis is moisture in the soil. To make the soil uninhabitable for mites, keep the plants close to infected soil well hydrated with cold water. On the other side, your plants will be grateful.

Infected Plants

As you might have imagined, plants themselves are the main source. The spider mites proliferate quickly.

Even if only one plant is infected, there is a strong likelihood that it will soon infect nearby plants as well.

Even if the plants are somewhat far apart from one another, they are still in danger. Plants that are grouped together will almost certainly become afflicted with spider mites.

Every time you bring a new plant home, I advise quarantining it for a few days and keeping an eye on it before putting it in its allocated location.

Garden Centres

In addition to plants produced at home, garden center plants can be a common source of spider mites.

The symptoms of a spider mite infestation appear on an infected plant pretty rapidly, so confine it as soon as you notice them.

When purchasing plants from retailers, I advise you to take extra precautions and request that the salesperson give the plant a full inspection before providing it to you.

Please refrain from purchasing plants with yellow or sunken leaves as these symptoms may be caused by an infestation of spider mites.

Malnutrition symptoms and leaf spots are frequent indicators of a spider mite infestation.

Poor Hygiene

When plants are not cleaned, spider mites find them to be a tasty feast. Plants require regular gentle washings to prevent dust from collecting on them.

Furthermore, cleaning can get rid of any spider mites that are already on the leaves and prevent them from spreading to neighboring plants.

Clothes and Shoes

Spider mites can attach to clothing and shoes that have come into contact with dust or sick plants. Without realizing it, humans may introduce these pests, causing them to decimate their happy, healthy plants.

Unfortunately, dust and other environmental irritants cannot be removed from clothing or shoes. However, you can stop the spread of spider mites by washing and drying your clothing.

Pets

Despite how beautiful they are, our furry buddies are another source of spider mites. These bothersome critters can disperse to plants and temporarily hide in the fur of cats and dogs.

Even in general, it’s a good idea to wash and maintain your pet’s cleanliness.

Regular brushing and bathing can keep your plants healthy and prevent problems like itching in your pets and plants by getting rid of spider mites.

Excessive Nitrogen

Nitrogen is a vital component of plants, but too much of it can cause a variety of problems. Spider mites are one of these issues.

Added nitrogen encourages the synthesis of “strange proteins.” These proteins enhance the sweetness of the plant juice, luring spider mites and other nectar-sucking insects.

The plant needs nitrogen to grow and thrive, but it must be careful to just generate what is necessary for its health.
