How To Propagate Fiddle Leaf Fig From Leaf

Placing a cutting or a single leaf in water is another traditional way of fiddle leaf fig growth. This technique works well for many individuals, and it’s entertaining because you can watch the rooted develop rather than having to wait for growth or yank on the cutting. In the glass container, they also look lovely.

I’ll admit, though, that it’s not my favored method for growing indoor plants, including fiddle leaf figs.

I prefer to make things as favorable to myself as possible whenever I can. As a result, I find that no commercial growers employ the water approach when deciding how to best propagate.

If you give it any thought, however, it makes sense. Since Ficus lyrata is not an aquatic plant, water propagation will not be the best environment for it to flourish in. But since most who attempt it succeed, it must be able to grow quite well in water.

Use a cutting with roughly 3 nodes, as mentioned above, rather than a single leaf for the greatest outcomes. (For an explanation of why using single leaves is not a wise choice, see below.)

Place the sliced piece in fresh water in a dimly lit area. To keep the oxygen levels stable, change the water every several days.

Here is where I fail with this approach. Normally, I forget. In comparison to an unwatered plant pot that seems dry and feels light as a feather, the water in the glass appears the same.

Because plants require oxygen, soil is a better environment for them than water. While there is some oxygen in water, it fades off the surface when the water is motionless. (A bubbler is required in aquariums in order to maintain the water’s oxygen levels.)

Watch for the roots to form; it took my leaf more than 6 weeks to do so. (Results are shown in the section below.)

Is it possible to grow fiddle leaf stem?

Taking a stem or leaf cutting from a fiddle leaf fig plant and letting it root in water or soil will result in a new, self-sustaining plant. Most houseplants can be propagated, albeit with different degrees of difficulty. In reality, fiddle leaf figs are rather simple to grow.

Can a leaf be used to clone?

You may easily and amusingly create clones of some of your favorite plants by taking leaf cuttings.

Some plants, but not all, can be multiplied from a single leaf or a portion of a leaf.

Be Patient

In February of 2018, Jackye embarked on a new fiddle leaf fig voyage. As of June, the majority of her new plants had not yet experienced much new development. New cuttings must be let at least four to eight weeks to root before they can begin to generate new leaves, which can take up to six months.

Before they notice the new roots, many growers give up on their cuttings and discard them, abandoning the tiny plants before they have a chance to start sprouting new leaves. But perseverance pays off; all but three of the 61 cuttings she took produced roots.

Expect Variability

By six weeks, the majority of Jackye’s cuttings had begun establishing new roots, but there was considerable variation. Some people got new roots in 3 or 4 weeks, while others needed 8 or 9 weeks. It’s critical to realize that every cutting is unique and that a variety of elements, including hormones, light, season, and time of day, influence the roots process. Prior to giving up on cuttings that haven’t developed roots, give them at least 10 to 12 weeks.

You Can Root Cuttings in Soil or Water

Cuttings of fiddle leaf figs can grow roots in either humid soil or water. The success of your project is unaffected by the growing medium, although there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Some of Jackye’s cuttings were rooted in both water and soil. After weighing both possibilities, she advises burying the roots in soil to avoid crushing the young, delicate roots while transferring them from water to soil. She did, however, like watching the new roots grow in the water.

A Rooting Hormone Is Critical

Use a rooting hormone whether you are rooting your cuttings in soil or water. Your plant receives instructions from the chemical powder to focus its efforts on growing roots rather than new leaves. Your prospects of success are minimal without it. On all of her cuttings, Jackye applied a substance resembling our Houseplant Propagation Promoter.

Soil Cuttings Don’t Need Drainage

For the purpose of being able to observe fresh development in both the soil- and water-rooted cuttings, Jackye rooted her cuttings in clear plastic Solo cups without any drainage holes. She never allowed them to dry out and maintained them uniformly hydrated. She put them into pots with drainage holes once the roots were strong.

Fiddle Leaf Fig Propagation Can Help Your Original Plant Grow

Jackye was pleased to observe new growth, including additional branches on each plant, after taking more than 60 cuttings from her original eight plants. Cuttings are not harmful to the mother plant when used for propagation, and they may even encourage new development.

Take Cuttings of New Growth if Possible

After a few months, Jackye found that the cuttings she took from the tops of her plants that were actively growing were the ones with the most new growth. For fresh growth, these terminal branches have already been programmed. All eight of the top cuttings she took began to establish roots and new growth in less than four months.

Jackye advises taking a branch or growing tip that is somewhere between six and eighteen inches long. Take off the leaves from the branch’s lower third or so. Place the sliced portion in potting soil after dipping it in rooting hormone. For roughly six weeks, or until you notice new roots, keep it very wet.

You can even divide a lengthy branch into multiple portions when pruning it, making care to leave a few leaves on each section. Fiddle leaf figs are quite powerful and hardy plants; Jackye even tried planting branches without leaves, and they ultimately began to grow again! Just a couple more months were needed.

Will fig cuttings germinate in liquid?

Cuttings of fig can easily take root in water. You only need a cup, some water, and a pair of clean, heavy-duty scissors or pruners. The entire process might take more than a month, but it could take as little as three weeks.

What happens if the top of a fiddle leaf fig is chopped off?

Your fiddle leaf fig probably has no other branches that will allow it to transition from a fiddle leaf shrub to a fiddle leaf tree. In addition, bear the following in mind before proceeding:

The amount of regrowth that results from pruning depends on how severe it was. The reason for this is that the plant is trying to grow again in an effort to balance the root system below with the shoot system above, which is now designed to support the plant at its bigger size before trimming.

Usually, the most active shoot growth takes place 6 to 8 inches after the pruning cut.

Make the cut on your fiddle leaf fig

Make a decision regarding the size of the Ficus lyrata cut. Once more, the branching will be more noticeable the longer a part is clipped. (And the less the plant will grow in height, at least for that shoot.)

Your fiddle leaf fig won’t be encouraged to generate as many lateral branches off of the main trunk if you simply pinch out the fresh buds at the top with your fingers.

If you want to encourage a little lateral development to make your plant appear fuller near the top, pinching is more helpful.

On the other hand, you’ll see a lot more branching if you remove 12 of the top shoots.

Choose the node that you want to cut above. The spots on stems known as nodes are where leaves, buds, or branches can grow. However, not every node has leaves or branches; some nodes may only have a mark and a little thickening of the stem. Internodes are the parts of the stem that lie between the nodes.

3. Make use of a clean pair of pruners. Just above the top of your node, make the cut. Cut just above the node rather than into it, which would harm it.

Any plant in the fig family, including your fiddle leaf fig, will exude an oozing, milky, white sap when cut. Simply avoid eating it, getting it in your eyes, or letting it land on the carpet because it can be annoying.

4. As a final piece of advice, wait to remove leaves from the trunk of your fiddle leaf until the new branches have begun to grow. Your plant should be as robust as possible because those leaves aid in the development of the new lateral buds.

I’m done now! Now, give your new lateral buds, which will eventually grow into branches, a few weeks. While the exact length of time varies on a number of variables, your chances of success are higher if you attempt this in the spring, when fiddle leaves are actively growing, as opposed to the winter, when they are largely dormant. In comparison to winter, when the plant will need more time to heal the cut and form new buds, springtime will see rapid new development.

How can a fig tree from a cutting be started?

A fig tree can be started from fig cuttings in one of three ways, each of which is a straightforward process. You can root figs using any of these easy, uncomplicated methods; your choice will likely depend on the local weather conditions during the dormant season.

Layering for Fig Propagation

Temperatures that never drop below freezing during the dormant season are necessary for the first way of propagating fig trees outside. By burying a low-growing branch part with 6 to 8 inches (15-20 cm) of the tip exposed above ground and allowing the buried portion to root before removing it from the parent tree, figs can be rooted. Although it is the most straightforward form of fig propagation, it can be challenging to maintain the ground as the branches root.

Rooting Fig Cuttings Outdoors

Fig cuttings are an increasingly common way to root figs outside. Take fig cuttings from young, two- to three-year-old tiny branches late in the dormant season, after the threat of frost has passed. They should be around the breadth of your pinky, 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1.3 to 1.9 cm) thick, and 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) long. The tip should be cut on a slant and the bottom end should be flat. Apply a sealant to the disease-prone slanted end and rooting hormone to the disease-resistant flat end.

It’s preferable to use six to eight shoots when learning how to start a fig tree using this method to account for some failures. There are always several triumphs to give away!

Place the flat end of the rooted fig into a hole that is approximately a foot (30 cm) apart and 6 inches (15 cm) deep. Water thoroughly but not excessively. Your fig cuttings can develop 36 to 48 inches in length in a year (91-122 cm.). The next dormant season, the new trees will be prepared for transplant.

Rooting Figs Indoors

How to start a fig tree inside is the third method of fig propagation. If your spring weather is unpredictable, this strategy is helpful for getting started early. Use the aforementioned procedure to take fig cuttings. Newspaper should line the bottom of a 6-inch (15-cm) pot before 2 inches (5 cm) of sand or potting soil are added. Four of your treated cuttings should be placed upright in the pot, with dirt being added around them. Place a 2-liter container with the bottom cut off over the cuttings after thoroughly watering the plant.

Keep the fig cuttings warm and in a window with good light—but not direct sunlight. Water only when the soil is really dry. When you notice fresh growth, wait a week before taking down the temporary greenhouse.

If the weather permits, plant your rooted fig cuttings outside or in larger pots once you notice significant growth. For the remainder of the summer, keep the transplants moist and observe their development.

As you can see, propagating fig trees is a straightforward operation that, when carried out correctly, can be both enjoyable and cost-effective. Cheers to that!

Can a plant be grown from a leaf?

Some plants, but not all, can be multiplied from a single leaf or a portion of a leaf. Most plants’ leaf cuttings don’t grow into new plants; instead, they usually merely develop a few roots or decompose. Leaf cuttings can only be utilized for plants that are able to develop adventitious buds since they lack an axillary bud. Some indoor plants are propagated nearly solely by leaf cuttings. Without rooting gel, is cloning possible?

Growing a donor or “mother” plant that is kept in a dormant state is the best technique to ensure a consistent supply of cuttings. In order to reduce stress as you shear off sections of the plant, you want your donor plant to be as healthy as possible and to have numerous nodes from which to cut clones. Dehydration is the most urgent issue a clone encounters, hence the donor plant should be properly turgid (well watered) at the moment of clone taking. The procedure may be broken down into three simple phases once you are ready to begin:

1. Start by cutting a side branch that is about 6 inches long. Make a second cut about 2-3 inches in from the end of this cutting after submerging it in water. By doing this, an embolism—or air bubble—is kept from penetrating the tissue surrounding the wound. Similar to in humans, embolisms can kill a clone or cause significant damage.

2. Quickly immerse the clone in the rooting medium of your choice after dipping it in rooting gel. We have a number of gels, including Olivia’s, Clonex, and RootTech, all of which function effectively. Since they adhere to the end of the clone rather than washing off when watered and help prevent embolisms by “capping” the wound, rooting gels are more effective to employ than powders. IBA, a hormone that promotes adventitious root growth, is the active component in RootTech and Clonex rooting gels. Peat plugs, rockwool, and mild-nutrient soils are typical cloning medium, which are comparable to those covered in the seed starting section. As you can witness root development as it occurs, peat plugs and rockwool are typically preferable over gently tugging a plant in soil to determine whether it has rooted itself.

You risk contaminating your entire supply with pathogenic bacteria if you dip clones directly into your gel bottle. Instead, dispense a good amount of gel onto wax paper or something comparable.

3. To reduce moisture loss through transpiration, keep the humidity high around the clones with a Mondi Humidome flat tray cover. In order to reduce transpiration, trim any big leaves on the cutting in half.

Investing in a hydroponic cloning system, which frequently has higher success rates and achieves rooted more quickly, may be a good idea if you regularly take many clones. You can save money and resources by using a hydroponic system instead of using any material to plant the cutting before it has rooted. Clones created in a hydroponic system can either be grown in soil or used in a hydroponic system for their entire life cycle. Aeroponic and bubble cloners are the two most widely used systems. Although you don’t always need to use cloning gel, the procedure for taking clones is the same as that previously mentioned.

A 3 or 5 gallon bucket, an air pump, a stone, 2 inch net cups, and neoprene collars are all you need to create a simple bubble cloner. To keep the stems moist, you must maintain a water level just over the bottom of the net cups.

Although more expensive, aeroponic cloning devices are the simplest, most reliable, and effective technique to clone. In the water reservoir, we put General Organics’ Diamond Black, a humic acid supplement, and General Hydroponics’ Rapid Start. These cloners have a success rate that is almost 100%. In the case of basil, roots can become evident in as little as 5 days, more frequently in 8 to 10 days. Cuttings with roots can be transferred from the EZ Clone into soil, a soilless medium, or a hydroponic medium.

Recall that keeping your cloning system clean will help to avoid bacteria and fungi from ruining the stems of your clones. Run H2O2 through the system for a few hours to clean it in between uses. Use a brush and diluted H2O2 or bleach solution for more stubborn buildup. Run Flora Shield along with your nutrition water to ensure that no bacteria are still present in the system.

To sum up, giving clones the best possible environment helps to reduce stress so they can root widely. Make certain your 3-6 inch cuttings have few (if any) big leaves, keep temperatures around 72 degrees, and offer relative humidity levels between 60 and 80 percent. Use cloning gels that contain micronutrients and the IBA hormone to start and accelerate root development. Water your cuttings with a mild liquid fertilizer like Rapid Start, which is made especially for seedlings and clones, to increase your success rate.
