How to Treat Spider Mites on a Fiddle Leaf Fig

I’ve dealt with at least three spider mite outbreaks, so I think I know how to handle them very well now. I’ve discovered that it’s crucial to be thorough with the procedure and to adhere to the follow-up deadlines to prevent things from spiraling out of control once more.

Step One:

Bring your plant collection outside, and give it a good hose-down. Consider doing this in the shower if you are unable to take them outside.

Make sure to thoroughly rinse each leaf, front and back, as you move from the top to the bottom of the plant.

Step Two:

Create a mixture of neem oil and water in a spray bottle once the plants have begun to slightly dry up from the rain. An environmentally beneficial substance called neem oil is frequently used to keep plants free of pests. In a 500mL spray bottle, you should only need a few milliliters, but check the box for precise numbers.

From top to bottom and on the front and back of the leaves, mist the plants with the solution. Make sure to spray each leaf until it is dripping with water. Even if it could be a little tedious, it’s best to do it right.

Don’t wipe the solution off the plants; instead, let them drip dry. Your plants can then be brought inside once more.

Step Three:

You should repeat the Neem Oil spray procedure 4-5 days after the initial treatment since spider mites proliferate quickly. As a result, the second solution will be used to treat any mites or eggs that were missed the first time and have since hatched.

After another 4-5 days, you might wish to administer the therapy a third time just to be safe. If you think you caught the outbreak in time, you might also simply keep a check on your plants.

General Tips for Treating Spider Mites

Don’t worry if you discovered spider mites on a fiddle leaf fig. Your collection should be free of the issue with prompt and thorough treatment of your plants.

Ladybugs are a good option (yes, a very creative common name for the Stethorus Punctillum).

Unfortunately, even if you do choose to use less natural alternatives, typical insecticides frequently have little effect on these annoying spiders. You must employ a miticide or another substance that will especially target these insects.

Due to their propensity for thriving in hot, dry environments, it is crucial to routinely inspect your plants for mites. If at all feasible, mist your plants occasionally to keep the humidity at a manageable level (especially during winter when the heater is running). Give your plants a neem oil bath every so often to help ward against various infestations.

Are spider mites killed by vinegar?

This is how I’ve always created a soap-and-oil spray: Combine 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon Dr. Bronner’s mild dish soap, and 1 cup water. Even though the adults of the whiteflies may flee, this works for little infestations.

Here are some methods I’ve employed to manage a minor spider mite infestation: In a spray bottle, combine 1 cup of water, 1/8 cup apple cider vinegar (white vinegar is acceptable as well), 1/2 t of baking soda, and a few drops of mild dish detergent. These vermin like to hang out there. Make sure to check any fresh plants you bring home to make sure no pests are present. The same holds true for plants that have spent the summer outdoors. Before taking them inside for the winter, inspect them for pests.

Do spider mites get killed by dish soap?

Testing was done to see how harmful pepper extracts were to spider mites. Approximately 45% of adult spider mites were destroyed by these peppers:

  • Rubbing alcohol: You can kill spider mites with the rubbing alcohol you have lying about your home. Cotton balls can be used to clean infected houseplants’ leaves by soaking them in rubbing alcohol. After letting the plants soak in the dish soap or rubbing alcohol for a few hours, thoroughly rinse the leaves with water.
  • Any spider mites that may have escaped the effects of homemade repellents can be washed away with the use of a garden hose. Spider mites can reappear after each rinse, so washing them away is only a temporary fix.

Can spider mites cause leaves to regenerate?

Have you ever had plants in your garden that were gorgeous before going bad? Perhaps you saw patches of withered or decomposed foliage or clusters of tiny white dots spreading across the leaves of your plant. Perhaps, like me when I was a beginning gardener, you witnessed entire plants decimated in a matter of weeks before realizing too late that they had been ravaged by a spider mite infestation.

You probably understand what I’m talking about if you’ve ever had to deal with spider mites in your garden. Even so, you may have thought to yourself, “Can my plants recover from this?

I have some good news for you as someone who has spent a decent amount of time combating spider mites and studying what works best when it comes to controlling these garden pests:

If adequate time and care are given to both treatment and prevention, plants can recover from spider mite infestations. Spider mite populations can be significantly reduced while plants are being treated with insecticidal soap and oil sprays, giving plants time to recover.

So, the good news is that. The caveat is that it won’t be simple to get rid of spider mites from your plants. If you follow the four-step procedure I’ve outlined below, you’ll be well on your way to eradicating your plants of spider mites, though it will frequently take at least two weeks of concentrated effort, careful attention, and a regular fertilizer program.

What are some spider mite repellents?

Spider mites are more closely linked to spiders than to other insects. These spiders have a single, oval body region, four pairs of legs, and no antennae. The majority of spider mites can weave exquisite silk webs. When fully grown, spider mites are quite little, measuring less than 1/50 of an inch (0.4 mm).

Landscapes in Ohio have a wide variety of spider mite species. The most prevalent pests are the twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) and spruce spider mite (Oligonychus ununguis). Other species with fewer host plants include the oak mite, Oligonychus bicolor, the boxwood spider mite, Eurytetranychus buxi (Garman), the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi, which is found on apple and serviceberry trees, the honeylocust spider mite, Platytetranychus multidigitali, the southern red mite, Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor), on a variety of plants,

Types of Damage

Spider mites have tiny mouthparts that have been adapted for piercing and emptying individual plant cells. Tiny yellow or white spots are the outcome. The foliage develops a yellow or bronze hue when a lot of these feeding locations are close to one another. When a plant’s foliage turns bronzed, it frequently dies off too soon.

Plants that have been heavily affected may become discolored, stunted, or even die. Spider mites that make webs may cover the leaves with the fine silk, which gathers dust and has a soiled appearance.

Life Cycles and Habits

Depending on the species, spider mites are active pests in both warm and cold climates. Summertime is the ideal time for the twospotted, European red, honeylocust, maple, and oak spider mites to thrive. The ideal seasons for spruce and southern red spider mites are spring and fall.

The phases of development for spider mites are the same for all of them. Eggs are often laid on their host plants by adult females. The first stage, known as a larva, emerges from the eggs in a matter of days to weeks. Larvae have just three pairs of legs and a spherical body. After a few days of feeding, the larvae look for a protected area to rest before molting into the first nymphal stage. Currently, the first nymph has four sets of legs. The initial nymphs feed for a short while, then rest and molt into the subsequent nymph. Second-stage nymphs eat, rest, and molt to become adults. The males typically have pointed abdomens and are the size of the second nymph. The largest mites in the area are females, which have rounded abdomens.

The twospotted spider mite overwinters as adult females resting in safe areas, unlike most spider mites that spend the winter in the egg stage.

Twospotted Spider Mite

An illustration of a “warm season” mite is the two-spotted spider mite. Over 180 host species, including weeds, field crops, decorative plants, and house plants, have been documented as having this pest. This insect mostly harms winged euonymus and viburnum plants, as well as perennial and annual flowers, in Ohio settings.

The females spend the winter on host plants or in the soil. In April and May, when looking for the undersides of leaves on suitable hosts, the females become active. A female may produce more than 100 eggs. Depending on the temperature, a single generation could take up to 20 days or just five. In chilly, rainy seasons, these mites frequently do not reach destructive concentrations because they favor hot, dry weather.

The nymphs and adults have two greenish patches on their white bodies in the summer. Overwintering females, however, typically turn a reddish-orange color and can be confused with other mite species.

Spruce Spider Mite

A typical “cool season” mite is the spruce spider mite. This pest can be found on all varieties of conifers, including junipers, arborvitae, and trees like spruces and pines.

The egg stage of this mite spends the winter fastened to tiny trees. The mites can finish their growth in 3–4 weeks after the eggs hatch in March through April. The female mites produce over-summering, latent eggs when the summertime temperature rises above 86F for three consecutive days. When the weather becomes cooler in the fall, these eggs hatch, and the nymphs and adults begin to move about again.

Conifers frequently respond slowly to this mite’s feeding. Even though the damage may have happened the previous fall and spring, the yellowing and bronzing of the needles may not become obvious until the heat of the summer.
