What is Air Layering?
A cutting can develop its own root system while still being linked to the mother plant thanks to the propagation technique known as air layering. Why Try Air Layering?
The soil and water propagation techniques are excellent for beginners to try their hand at plant propagation. However, they have the most success when they take little plant cuttings.
Fiddle Leafs are notoriously difficult to propagate from cuttings longer than 6 inches or with more than three to four leaves still attached. This is because the cutting is using so much energy simply to maintain its own life that it is unable to produce new roots.
The ideal technique to employ if you wish to propagate a large piece of a plant, like a branch, is air layering. It resembles propagation in reverse, in a way! Before being clipped off, the cutting develops its own root system to improve its chances of surviving after being taken off.
How long does air layering a fig take?
When air layered, most fig plants will start to grow roots in one to two months. However, depending on the temperature and climate, the precise rooting time may change significantly. The fig stem roots don’t need any special attention, but the tree does need to be maintained irrigated to stay hydrated and healthy. When the fig stem is prepared for transplant, masses of bright, white roots will be visible through the polyethylene. Remove the plastic and sphagnum moss bundle to reveal the roots, then cut the stem slightly below the rooted section. Carefully move it into a 1-gallon nursery pot filled with quick-draining potting soil, then put it in a protected area with some mild shade.
How long does it take air layering to get established?
Keep an eye on the roots bundle; if it seems to be drying out, you might need to add a few drops of water. The emergence of roots can take one to three months. Before attempting to separate your cutting from its parent plant, they should be roughly two inches long and visible through the moss. To achieve this, use a knife or pruning shears to cut the stem of the plant just below the roots, and then take off any covering of plastic or film. Put the new plant in a pot while leaving the moss alone.
For about a week, hang it with stakes over the plant, cover it with plastic, and keep it out of direct sunlight. After that, you can start poking holes in the “tent” to gradually expose the plant to decreased humidity. Just be cautious not to forget about or leave up one of your air layering bundles!
Is water air layering necessary?

Many tropical home plants that are difficult or slow to root can be easily rooted using the AIR layering technique. Additionally, it is the best and safest approach to prune such plants into new, more attractive specimens. Many tropical plants that have overgrown are too tall or lanky for their environment. They frequently lose their oldest, lowest leaves, presenting an unsightly bare stem. (This is particularly true for big tub specimens growing on a patio or deck.) In comparably little time, air layering can result in a rooted plant of sizable size and vigor without the leaf loss that would result from treating the shoots or stems as cuttings.

Nowadays, it’s also known as Chinese layering. This process results in the production of roots on the shoot or stem that are still connected to the parent plant. As the roots grow, the parent provides water and nutrients. The cut must be covered as soon as it is produced to prevent drying out, therefore all the materials should be available before air layering. A sharp knife, two handfuls of damp sphagnum moss, a piece of polyethylene film or silver foil, and some string or raffia are all that are required.

The cut or cuts are made where the roots will eventually grow, at the location where the parent plant’s top will be severed. This typically occurs eight to fifteen inches below the tip, frequently immediately beneath the lowest leaf. However, there is a maximum stem size that can be properly stacked. The distance from the tip of the cut should not exceed two feet. To keep the wound from closing up by itself, stick a match, toothpick, splinter of wood, or small rock into the wound.
Another effective way to harm the stem and encourage roots is via ringing. Instead of making a slanting cut, it is possible to remove a ring of bark from woody plants like crotons, fatshederas, camellias, and gardenias to reveal the white wood in the stem’s heart.
The stem’s bark has been totally cut away around it. About half an inch to an inch above the initial cut, a parallel incision of a comparable size is made. Between the two cuts, the bark is removed, and the white wood is scraped to remove the slick cambium layer. The ring should be 1.5 times as wide as the diameter of the stem.
For healthy roots, it is not necessary to gently and thinly sprinkle a root-inducing substance onto the exposed area, notch, or ring. Rooting compounds should only be used in the amounts recommended on the container and are not a replacement for good maintenance.
As soon as possible after cutting, the inflicted wound is bandaged or coated with moist sphagnum to prevent drying out. A moss ball with a diameter of two inches is adequate for little plants. In relation to the size of the plant’s top, it should be large enough to accommodate a plentiful supply of roots. A double handful of moss is typically plenty for larger plants.
Moss needs to be moist but not sopping wet. Roots won’t form if the soil is too damp. Before using, the moss should be wrung dry of extra moisture. To ensure proper contact, the moss is tightened tightly all the way around the cut surface. The covering should be fashioned like a football, thickest in the middle, and tapering off toward the ends. It should be put in place with strong twine or raffia, loosely but securely.
The sphagnum is covered with silver foil or film that has been carefully fastened or sealed at the top and bottom to create a moisture-proof box. Rubber bands, raffia, or twine are great for sealing the ends because they may extend if necessary. Adhesive tape is also effective.
Even yet moderate wetness is the primary need for good air layering. Since it allows air to travel through while holding moisture or humidity, polyethylene film is invaluable as a covering since it avoids the need to water the moss every day. Only very rarely, when roots take an extremely lengthy period to form, will more sphagnum moistening be required. With film, it is also feasible to monitor the development of the roots without having to open the wrapping, which can harm the freshly created roots.
The layer, or new plant, can be detached from the parent once roots have fully developed throughout the moss (in two to eight weeks, or longer, depending on the plant and season). The layer shouldn’t be removed until it grows enough roots to stand alone. Just below the roots and moss ball, a cut is made. If the moss ball is dry, it should be wet before the film is removed without upsetting it.
After that, the layer is properly potted, and the roots are kept moist enough to meet the needs of the new plant. Until the roots are established, it’s critical to maintain high humidity around newly potted, air-layered plants. The required warm, moist environment will be preserved with a polyetnylene cover.
What will I need in order to air layer?
Gather a clean, sharp knife, sphagnum moss, polyethylene film, aluminum foil, twist ties, twine, or electrician’s tape in order to successfully air layer a plant. Although not required, rooting hormones may increase rooting success.

How much air can you layer onto a branch?

- Cambium layer (green tissue just inside the bark) must be completely removed by scraping with a knife. Scraping won’t be necessary if the bark is slipping since the cambium layer will be removed along with the bark. A rooting hormone powder suggested for hardwood cuttings should be sprinkled on the exposed surface or, if it is a liquid solution, applied with a paintbrush.
- Cover the encircled area with a handful of sphagnum moss that has been presoaked and wrung dry of extra water. This should be tightly wrapped in medium weight plastic wrap (from the kitchen) and fastened above and below the ball of moss using twist ties. (These connections may not be required.) To deter birds from pecking, cover the ball with a square of aluminum foil, dull side out.
- By the fall or late summer, air layers that were created in the spring have typically developed roots. The plastic will allow visibility of the feeder roots.
- Use sharp clippers to cut the mother plant’s limb at the bottom edge of the moss when the roots can be seen through the moss. Take away the plastic. Until planting, soak in a pail of water.
- Avoid attempting to remove the moss as doing so could harm the delicate roots. The majority of the time, planting in a container before placing it in the ground will yield the best outcomes. The first year, air layers frequently blossom, but extra buds should be removed to avoid stressing the plant.
