A tropical tree with fiddle-shaped leaves, the ficus lyrata is a native of the lowland rainforests of West Africa. It has a lifespan of 25 to 50 years (if cared for properly in non-tropical conditions).
What makes it so well-liked in the design community? Most people give the tree’s large, floppy spherical leaves, which resemble violins, credit. People anthropomorphize the plant by comparing these to babies’ huge eyes in an effort to make them desire to care for it.
Of course, the majority of designers would also mention how photogenic the plant is, which undoubtedly helps.

Although this lush plant is beautiful and has shiny, violin-shaped leaves, it can be challenging to maintain. But don’t worry—we have advice to maintain it flourishing in your area.
The good news is that the fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata), if acclimated, can grow to be at least 6 feet tall, making it an impressive statement piece. If you want a different look, there are also various cultivars of the plant, such “Suncoast” and “Compacta,” that don’t grow as tall and are bushier.

How long do fig trees live?
The fig is likely the world’s oldest fruit that has been domesticated, coming from Asia Minor originally. There is evidence that suggests that some of us planted fig trees right outside of our caves some 10,000 years ago. This was probably done so that we could sneak out for a figgy treat without having to worry too much about being ripped to shreds by a Saber-toothed Tiger.
Fig and man have gone a long way since then, but they have remained close friends. They have travelled and lived together in places with mild winters and warm, dry summers all across the world.
The common fig, Ficus carica, will be the subject of this essay. We’ll discuss several types of figs, hardy figs, fig culture, fig reproduction, fig propagation, appropriate fig companion plants, and commercial fig cultivation.
Uses
The fruit can be consumed raw, dried and used in confections, brewed to make alcohol, or used as a laxative. The fruit contains calcium, fructose, potassium, iron, copper, carbs, and vitamin A. The dried leaves can be used for tea or as a potherb or given to animals. The tree is valued in the ornamental garden and is often grown for shade.
Growing conditions
Fig can be grown at higher elevations in locations with little rainfall and does best in environments with a moderate relative humidity. Particularly during the flowering and fruiting seasons, figs need some dry months, and other sources claim that they also need some winter cooling. They are light-demanding plants and will flourish when exposed to at least eight hours of direct sunlight daily. The fig can thrive in almost every soil type, but it prefers sandy-clay loams with pH levels between 6.0 and 8.0, tolerating soils with a lot of lime. For growth, 11.5 m of soil depth is adequate. From the sea level to 1,700 metres above it, figs can also grow in rocky regions.
Growing behaviour
Figs are a species with shallow, fibrous roots, but depending on the environment, the roots may also expand laterally and vertically. The growth of figs can resemble that of a single stemmed tree or a multi-stemmed shrub, and they frequently send up suckers from the tree’s base and spread branches that are low to the ground. Fig wood decays quickly and is brittle. In our environment, leaves begin to emerge in late spring and fall shortly after the first frost in late October. Despite some trees producing two crops, known as the breba crop, fig fruit is only borne on the fresh spring growth. At the nodes or leaf axils of the wood from the previous year, the breba fruit grows.
Fruit
Depending on the cultivar and climate, fruits often ripen from August to October. Some trees produce what is known as a breba, which are fig fruits that form in the spring on the growth of the previous year’s shoots. The main fig crop then forms on the growth of the new shoots and ripens in the late summer or fall. Spring frosts frequently decimate the breba crop in colder locations.
Ecology
In some regions, fig fruit provides a significant source of food for many of the fauna, and the fig tree’s growth is due in part to those who consume its fruit. Animals like birds and mammals that leave behind droppings spread seed. Numerous bee species and wasps are frequently observed feeding on bird-made apertures in fruit. We’ll always have a plentiful supply of figs and leave part of the fruit on the tree for other living things.
Fig Types
Four distinct categories can be used to categorise figs:
- Common: fruit set does not require pollination
- San Pedro: The first harvest, known as the breba crop, does not require pollination, but the second crop must.
- Caduceus/Smyrna: fruit set necessitates pollination.
- Capri or Male: the pollinator typically dwells in inedible figs.
More than 750 cultivars can be found within these categories! More naturally occurring varieties of the fig exist than any other tree crop.
Cold Hardy Fig Cultivars
Although figs are frequently thought of as a Mediterranean plant, several of them have been developed to endure cold regions, sometimes even withstanding winter lows of -20 C.
Since young figs are more susceptible to cold winters than larger figs, it is advisable to overwinter immature plants and maybe continue to grow in a pot until a strong root system has developed, especially if you are growing figs outside of their typical climate.
Figs that are between two and five years old may die back to the ground in extremely cold winters, according to some authorities. A fig has a higher chance of dying in extremely moist winter soils. A generous winter mulch, together with careful site selection and soil preparation, can help to prevent this.
One of the world’s toughest fig varieties may have originated in Bulgaria. Here, a cultivar known as “Michurinska 10” is frequently grown at elevations greater than 1000 m in regions that experience extremely cold winter lows of below -20.
When the fruits are ripe, which can occur as early as late August through early October, they are small, plentiful, and tasty. The fruits can be left on the tree to dry and preserve far into the winter during a hot, dry summer like we experienced this year. It is also quite efficient to pick them when they are ripe, split them in half, and leave them in the car parked in the sun for a few days.
Here, the lengthy, sweltering summers guarantee a consistently good output from these plants. The top growth occasionally dies back during extremely cold winters, but new growth from the plant’s base emerges in the spring and can result in a healthy crop of figs that summer. We found it best practise to eliminate at least 50% of the new growth before fruit sets and to thin down to no more than 8–10 of the best stems in the autumn following a harvest. 30–50 stems may emerge in the spring.
Where to Plant your Fig
For figs to mature into tasty fruits, they need full sun all day. Choose a location where the tree can grow because certain kinds might become large and will shadow out plants growing beneath. Crop loss results from attempts to reduce size by reducing branch length.
Figs can be grown successfully in containers, which will control the plant size. Replace the majority of the soil in the tub used for container-grown plants every three years, and keep the sides of the tub shaded to prevent warming in direct sunshine.
Espalier trees should be planted against a south-facing, light-colored wall in locations with short (less than 120 days between frosts), chilly summers in order to benefit from the reflected heat. Grow in the warmest spot in coastal climates, up against a sunny wall or in a heat trap.
Fig Root Invasiveness
Although much depends on the cultivar, where it is planted, and the general soil quality, fig tree roots tend to be quite invasive. When planted in ideal conditions, the majority of fig trees spread their roots widely, which can occasionally encircle and suffocate other plants as well as wreak havoc on roadways, sidewalks, and other nearby structures. Fig trees typically thrive in gardens or areas with lots of open space around them. Some growers will put trees in pots or construct subterranean retaining walls to keep the roots organised in order to reduce root invasion.
Larger trees, such the brown turkey fig trees, have more of a tendency to dominate a place, while celeste or malta fig trees often keep their root systems more or less limited.
Fig Pruning
Only in the early years, when trees should be groomed for the intended fruit usage, such as a low crown for fresh-market figs, is pruning advised. Winter pruning will result in the loss of the following year’s harvest when cultivating a breba crop since the crop is borne in the leaf axils of the wood from the previous year. The next spring will yield many new shoots from the buried wood just below ground level if a mature tree dies back during a cold winter. In such cases, we believe it is best practise to remove all but 1012 stems from these. Additional plant thinning (of the now bush-like plant) will aid facilitate access within the crown for plucking fruit, promote air circulation, and produce fewer but higher-quality fruits. Any mature stems that appear congested or are in contact with one another are cut off.
When trimming and collecting figs, it’s a good idea to wear gloves because the branches and leaves contain a milky liquid that can irritate human skin.
Irrigation requirements
The majority of Mediterranean nations produce figs as rain-fed crops, however the crucial time to irrigate is in the early spring before a rapid shoot and fruit development. Rainfall of 750 mm per year is thought to be adequate for growing a decent crop. Fruits may split due to rain or intensive irrigation during fruit development and ripening.
Harvesting Figs
Before being collected, figs must be allowed to ripen completely on the tree. If harvested before they are ready, they will not ripen. A mature fruit will have a soft, beginning to bend at the neck, and be slightly soft. To prevent bruising, gently harvest the fruit. Only 23 days can be spent in the refrigerator storing fresh figs because they don’t keep well. Some fig varieties taste well when dried. They need 45 days to dry in the sun, ten to twelve hours in a dehydrator, and two to three days to dry on top of a car’s dash (parked in a sunny spot). For six to eight months, dried figs can be kept in storage.
Care and Maintenance
Our figs require relatively little maintenance, as far as we can tell. In the past, we have mulched the base of the trees with a bale of straw before winter and added 20 L of mature compost. Since one of our trees is adjacent to a vegetable garden and another is near to a chicken run, I suppose they graze in those areas for the nutrients they require.
Pests and Diseases Problems
Most problems are avoided by using appropriate practises because they mostly arise when trees are stressed. Although we have never had a disease or pest issue, birds do take some of our crop.
Sometimes a young, healthy fig tree will experience proper pollination and fruit set before abruptly dropping all of its fruit. Overfeeding is typically the root cause of this problem. For the fig to recover from over-fertilization and produce a harvest that ripens and stays on the tree, it may take three to four years. You shouldn’t experience this if you use good compost fed at the base of the plant (20 L in the spring) rather than store-bought liquid feeds.
Fig Propagation
Figs are often reproduced using cuttings and tissue culture for commercial plantations. Hard wood cuttings planted both indoors and outdoors in a free draining medium in the late autumn or early winter have been successful for us (50 percent river sand 50 percent sieved compost). Division (digging up portions of the root system that have sprouted new shoots) and layering have also yielded positive outcomes for us. Watering the cuttings thoroughly during dry spells is crucial for success. Taking 15 cm cuttings of the second year’s growth and putting them in 10 cm of water is another effective technique that may be used at any time of the year. Every 5-7 days, clean the water when it starts to turn green, and plant when a strong root system begins to develop.
Fig Reproduction
The fig is actually a flower, or more precisely, an inflorescence, which is a cluster of several flowers and seeds housed inside of a bulbous stem. Due to its peculiar configuration, the fig’s seeds—technically, its ovaries—need a specific pollinator that can move around inside the fruit. And so the tale of the relationship between figs and fig wasps begins.
The ostiole, a little aperture in the fig through which the fig wasp queen enters, is practically the ideal size for the purpose.
The queen enters the chamber and moves around, laying her eggs while simultaneously shedding the pollen she brought from another fig. The queen is fertilising the fig’s ovaries, which, while not her main objective, is an essential role. The queen passes away after laying her eggs. The male and female wasps play vastly distinct functions once the queen’s eggs hatch. After mating, the ladies start gathering pollen while the wingless males start edging a route to the fig’s exterior. Instead of trying to get away, they are doing this to make room for the females to leave. As queens, the females will fertilise another fig. The males will live inside a single fruit for the duration of their life cycle.
However, typical fig varieties have all female flowers, which means they do not require pollination for fruiting because the fruit can develop through parthenocarpic means. This is bad news for vegetarians because it means that when you eat fig, you probably consume wasp. Typical cultivars include Black Mission, Brown Turkey, Brunswick, and Celeste.
Companion Plants for Figs: Fig Polycultures
Because of its wide shallow root system and intense shadow when mature, fig trees typically restrict the growth of plants that are immediately growing under their crowns. But over time, I have noticed the following list of plants—some of which we planted, some naturally occurring—growing beside the fig.
I leave the branches on our fig trees low to the ground so that I can pluck the fruits with ease. This causes a very deep shade to be cast beneath the plant, which reduces the amount of biomass the comfrey and artichoke produce in the summer. Tuberous comfrey in particular creates a dense mat and blooms profusely before dying back in the summer when the fig is in full leaf. Underplantings do grow well before the fig leaves emerge in late spring.
It is recommended to choose early flowering plants that can survive severe shade in the summer and yield before May when planting alongside figs. We have experimented with bulbs (listed below) that use nutrients during the dormant season, offer bees and other pollinators early nectar and pollen, and bring beauty in contrast to the winter fig’s drab frame.
Orchard Establishment
Figs are sown in the early spring and winter. The variety picked will determine the spacing. 833 trees per hectare, or 3 x 4 m, are planted on average. In Valinho’s most recent efforts, 2,666 trees were planted per acre.
The majority of nations prepare pits for planting using well-rotted farmyard manure since figs do well in organic matter. Per tree, at least 20 L are added.
Caprification
The male trees are grown in a location far from the orchard in orchards needing caprification. There must be one male tree for every fifty female trees. When the figs reach button size, they are hung in trees in the orchard in stretch poly bags.
Drying Figs
Depending on the region, dried figs are dried for 3 to 4 days after being let to ripen on the tree. As is the situation in Turkey, Iran, Greece, and the United States, where they fall to the ground and are then vacuumed up, figs can really dry on the tree.
Pests and Diseases
Rust, mosaic virus, and endosepsis are the three main diseases that damage figs, and fig stem borer, mealy bugs, fruit fly, aphids, and scale are all insects that can harm a tree’s health. The majority of these issues are avoided by proper orchard upkeep because they mostly arise when trees are stressed.
Soil Cultivation
Although figs can grow in a variety of soil types, they produce more when the soil has a sandy-clay loam profile. For root development, a depth of 1.5 m is sufficient, but water logging will negatively impact growth and productivity. pH levels should be between 6 and 8. Testing for root nematodes that are known to harm figs should be done before planting a large number of fig trees.
Fertilisation
Although figs can thrive in soil conditions that are inappropriate for other crops, new research has shown that minerals have an impact on yield and quality. Variety-specific nutrient needs vary, but leaf analysis will reveal fertiliser requirements. The size and colour of the fruit are negatively impacted by nitrogen in types intended for drying. The barley crop is negatively impacted by excessive nitrogen as well. Your fig trees should receive enough fertiliser from a good application of compost (20–40 L under a mature tree; 1020 for young trees) and regular comfrey mulching.
Pruning
This has emerged as one of the most crucial instruments in the modern orchard, along with fertiliser. Most orchards in Japan are positioned 2 metres, 400 millimetres above the ground. For simpler plucking, new shoots train onto a trellis that is 2 metres high. Summer tip trimming is done in order to make room for additional early or breba crops. Later picking/ripening of fruit can be significantly influenced by the date of trimming.
Harvest
Since ripening does not proceed after plucking, figs are only harvested when fully ripe. Summer fruits will begin to ripen depending on the region towards the end of August, and depending on the cultivar will
till the end of October, continue for 4 to 8 weeks. Fruit is picked every third day during the beginning of ripening, increasing to every day while the harvest is brisk, and decreasing to every third day as the harvest winds down. Typically, fruit pickers can pick 100 fruits every hour.
Daily collections of figs for shipping are made just when they are beginning to ripen fully but still respond to gentle pressure, which is typically indicated by tiny skin splits. They need to be chilled right away. For
