The Fiddle Fig can reach heights of about 15 meters when planted outdoors, but only about 3 meters when cultivated indoors. The size of the container and careful trimming can frequently be used to manage the size, form, and height of the indoor Fiddle Leaf Fig.

Growing pet grass is one method for diverting your pets’ attention away from any potential threat. Once it has grown, put the grass next to your pet’s bowl to reward good behavior. The idea behind a pet herb garden is that some animals will intuitively consume plants that have medical benefits, such as peppermint to calm an upset stomach.

Another choice is to purchase a plant spray that is suitable for pets and has a harsh taste to discourage nibbling.

The fiddle-leaf fig, or Ficus lyrata, is the ideal interior specimen plant. The plant has erect, violin-shaped leaves that are enormous, densely veined, and tall. Our retail plant shop in San Francisco almost always has Ficus lyrata on hand.

These plants are indigenous to the tropics, where they flourish in hot, muggy weather. As a result, the home grower may find it difficult to replicate these steamy circumstances, making them a little more difficult. Fortunately, they are rather resilient plants that can endure less-than-ideal conditions for a fair amount of time. Last but not least, F. lyrata are really produced as larger specimen plants. If you can place them in a floor-standing planter that will allow the plant to grow to at least 6 feet, that would be ideal. In tropical settings, trees frequently reach heights of 40 feet or more. These are not naturally trimmed down to reasonable sizes due to their enormous leaves, though they can be shaped with light trimming.

Ficus lyrata plants don’t require much maintenance. Spotting on the leaves, which is particularly obvious in a plant with such huge leaves, is one of the most prevalent complaints about these plants. This spotting is typically brought on by a leaf injury, such as mechanical harm or a mite infestation. When exposed to air, the sap of Ficus lyrata can produce these brown patches. The plants are also vulnerable to a number of leaf-spotting and fungus diseases, which are often brought on by poor air circulation and an excessive amount of moisture that collects on the leaves. By keeping the plant well-trimmed and eliminating any dead leaves or twigs that you spot, you can assist stop this form of attack.

Advice: Avoid often turning or moving this plant. The plant should be placed permanently, and to keep it clean, use an old T-shirt to dust it. As necessary, stake and prune. Only leaves facing the light will remain on Ficus lyrata; ones facing a darker wall or corner will wither away. If you move or reposition your ficus, be prepared for leaf loss.

Ficus lyrata need strong, filtered light. Even a little sun won’t kill them, especially if they’re in an eastern-facing window. When housed in a too-dark environment, plants won’t develop quickly.

Water: Keep it moist, but don’t let it stand in water because that will cause it to lose leaves and develop root rot.

Fertilizer: For plants that are not in ideal conditions or are recuperating from stress, apply Maxsea All Purpose Fertilizer seasonally and up to monthly.

Is the sap from fiddle leaf figs harmful?

The toxicity of fiddle leaf figs to cats, dogs, and people is a major concern for many fiddle leaf fig owners or potential fiddle leaf fig owners.

The bad news is that fiddles are poisonous to humans as well as animals like cats and dogs.

Fiddle leaf fig leaves, stems, and trunks release an unpleasant white sap when cut, which you do not want to get on your skin or consume!

The good news is that fiddle leaf figs are only mildly poisonous, so even while eating them can make you sick and irritate your stomach, throat, and mouth, it won’t kill you. The sap from a violin can also hurt or possibly cause skin blisters. Gloves should always be worn when pruning or propagating your violin (for this reason, of course)!

Here’s what you need to know and what to do if a pet ingests any portion of your fiddle or gets the sap on its skin if you have animals that might bite into your fiddle’s leaves.

Are fig trees toxic to people?

Similar to other plant species in the Moraceae family, exposure to ultraviolet light followed by contact with the milky sap of Ficus carica can result in phytophotodermatitis, a potentially dangerous skin infection. F. carica is classified in the FDA Database of Hazardous Plants even though the plant itself is not poisonous per se. [46]

Furanocoumarins are organic chemical substances that are known to cause phytophotodermatitis in people.

[47] Psoralen and bergapten, two furanocoumarins, are present in large amounts in common figs.

The largest concentration of any organic substance extracted from fig leaves is found in the essential oil of fig leaves, which has a psoralen content of over 10%.

[49] Psoralen appears to be the main furanocoumarin chemical in charge of phytophotodermatitis brought on by fig leaves.

Psoralen and bergapten are primarily found in the milky sap of F. carica’s leaves and shoots but not in the fruits.

Is fig white sap harmful to consume?

Answer They shouldn’t, though. When harvested, a ripe fig shouldn’t spill a significant amount of white sap on its stem. When taken off the tree, an unripe (or green) fig will shed a drop of sap.

Latex is the milky-white sap. Although fig trees produce latex in all of their parts, immature or nearly ripe figs have more sap than ripe figs. If you consume too many unripe figs, the sap from them may irritate your throat or upset your stomach. To determine ripeness, simply remove a fig from the tree and inspect the separation point (no sap = eat, sap = don’t eat).

Actually, a number of plant families produce a significant amount of milky latex. These families include the Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbia), Asclepiadaceae (milkweed), Moraceae (mulberries), and Dogbane (dogbane) (Apocynaceae). The family of mulberries includes figs. Additionally, sweet potatoes, poinsettias, dandelion, and dumbcane are plants that produce latex sap (a houseplant).

It was once believed that chicle, the milky latex of the sapodilla tree (Manilkara zapota), was a reliable supply of natural rubber. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna shipped two tons of chicle to New York in 1866. He met Thomas Adams there. (Santa Anna was the well-known commander who commanded the Mexican forces in the battle of the Alamo in 1836.) Adams made a vain attempt to vulcanize the chicle. (To make latex more enduring and weatherproof, sulfur was added. This type of rubber was vulcanized.

He recalled Santa Anna saying that the latex from chicle plants was chewed by Mexicans. Adams had the brilliant idea to flavor and sweeten chicle to manufacture chewing gum. Adams’ concept ushered in the chewing gum business. Chewing gum under the Adams brand is still available today. The Chiclets brand of chewing gum was little chunks.

For use in coagulating milk to make cheese and junket, fig latex is collected, dried, and powdered. Although latex toxicity is not normally a problem for individuals, it can be a workplace danger for businesses that harvest latex and figs.

Figs are believed to have originated in western Asia, yet Adam from The Garden of Eden is frequently depicted with fig leaves covering specific body parts. With fig chewing gum, Thomas Adams probably would have had greater success than Adam would have with fig underpants.
