Why Is The Dragon Tree Endangered?

The tree is listed as Vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The loss of their habitat due to ranching and farming is a threat. Some dragon trees are no longer flourishing in their native environments due to a changing climate that is drier than earlier years, with shorter periods of low-lying clouds and mist. The tree, however, is commonly farmed, and despite its slow growth, it is sometimes employed in landscaping and as a potted indoor tree.

Is the dragon blood tree endangered?

Dracaena cinnabari (dragon’s blood trees) are evolutionary miracles of the plant kingdom, but they may not be around for much longer.

The extraordinary-looking dragon’s blood tree, which is classified as endemic to a single island in the Socotra archipelago off the coast of Yemen in the Arabian Sea, is native to a single island in the Socotra archipelago “vulnerable to extinction,” can reach a height of more than 30 feet and live for more than 600 years. It produces rich fruit and a vermilion sap — the source of its name — that has been used for generations as anything from medicine to lipstick, and even as a lacquer for violins.

The trees are visually amazing. Their branches develop in an outward forking pattern that resembles a huge mushroom or an umbrella that has been blown inside out by the wind.

The sight of the dragon’s blood isn’t the only thing that resembles an umbrella. According to new research published in the journal Forests, the tree could also be considered an umbrella species, with its preservation benefiting a wide range of other species.

Large, charismatic mammals and birds such as giant pandas, mountain gorillas, and northern spotted owls have traditionally been considered umbrella species. The notion is that by conserving these species and their habitats, you are also conserving everything else that lives nearby, whether directly or indirectly.

A group of researchers from Socotra, Spain, and Portugal wanted to see if the dragon’s blood tree could achieve the same thing, despite the fact that it stays put unlike other umbrella species. It’s not such a big jump: The tree has long been regarded as an indicator species, meaning it responds fast to environmental changes and is home to a diverse range of the island’s other unique animals. But, might safeguarding the dragon’s blood benefit other animals as well?

After two months of investigation, the researchers discovered that 280 trees offered food and shelter to at least 12 of Socotra’s endemic reptile species, including ten geckos, one chameleon, and a snake. Some of these species have only been seen a few times, so they are unlikely to be completely reliant on the dragon’s blood, while others, such as the critically endangered gecko Hemidactylus dracaenacolus, appear to live exclusively in the woods.

The trees were not the sole factor in the equation. Cissus bushes occur close and around the trees, providing a shared habitat for many of the lizards observed.

Despite the fact that the study was short, the researchers believe it supports their idea that the dragon’s blood tree should be declared an umbrella species in the Socotra archipelago and protected for the greater good.

And that safety net is desperately required. Logging, habitat fragmentation, and livestock overgrazing of seeds and young shoots are just a few of the threats that dragon’s blood trees confront. Only a small percentage of newly planted trees make it to maturity. Only 10% of the trees’ potential habitat is now occupied.

Climate change will exacerbate the problem. The island is already drying out, and research mentioned in the Forests paper estimates that by 2080, the dragon’s blood will have lost up to 45 percent of its remaining range.

According to the researchers, this suggests that dragon’s blood woods are in desperate need of protection right now.

Yemen, on the other hand, is still mired in a five-year conflict that includes a power struggle for control of Socotra. Conservation efforts on the island have been hampered by the violence, which has claimed the lives of almost 100,000 people. The researchers, who did their research before the hostilities erupted, point out that foreign funding has been allocated to help nurseries cultivate dragon’s blood seedlings “Due to the country’s political situation, the project has been put on pause.” (In the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, Saudi Arabia just announced a two-week cease-fire, which was set to begin on April 9.)

For the time being, the dragon’s blood tree lives on, and its umbrella-like branches provide crucial shelter and resources to both human and ecological groups.

Are dragon trees rare?

The dragon blood tree is an uncommon plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family’s dracaena genus. The dragon blood tree first appeared in the Mediterranean approximately 50 million years ago. It can presently be found in Socotra, Yemen, in a nature reserve with 360 species of endangered plants and animals.

The species is protected from picking and uprooting in Cape Verde under national law.

A network of protected areas is being established, which could provide a safe haven for some of the species’ populations.

Botanic gardens and arboreta have collections of this species, providing a valuable genetic resource for possible restoration efforts.

The dragon tree has a lengthy lifespan, with some specimens in the Canary Islands dating back over a thousand years. Dragon Tree creates a striking focal point in the environment with its stunning umbrella shape and palmlike look. It is an excellent choice for coastal areas since it can withstand strong winds, sea spray, and saline soils.

What is the rarest tree on earth?

Pennantia baylisiana, a tree species known solely as Pennantia baylisiana, may be the world’s rarest plant. In fact, it was formerly referred to as such by the Guinness Book of World Records. Only one tree in the wild exists, on one of the Three Kings Islands off the coast of New Zealand, where it has sat alone since 1945. It wasn’t always like this, but goats were introduced to the island by humans, and they ate every other member of their kind.

Scientists have attempted to produce additional P. baylisiana trees over the previous few decades, but aside from getting cuttings to grow, simple biology stood in the way: the tree was assumed to be female, and it appeared to require a male to properly generate fruit and seeds.

Peter de Lange, a biologist with the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DoC), discovered several surprising bits of information when creating a recovery strategy for the species in the early 1990s. For starters, gardeners on the New Zealand mainland produced many P. baylisiana seedlings (all cloned from cuttings of the original plant) that proved to be pure instances of the species, not hybrids of other Pennantia species as had been previously assumed. Second, after manual pollination, one of the seedlings actually produced fruit. De Lange came to the conclusion that the wild tree was not truly female after all. Moreover, comparable research published around the same time revealed that the tree was female but possessed a low level of male-like characteristics, allowing it to pollinate itself.

Since then, mainland nurseries have sold hundreds of P. baylisiana seedlings, but scientists have been hesitant to return trees or seeds to the Three Kings Islands for fear of introducing diseases or fungal pathogens that could harm the healthy wild tree.

De Lange and his crew are returning to the Three Kings Islands this year with the goal of planting 1,600 P. baylisiana seedlings. De Lange claims that the seeds have been meticulously processed to ensure that there is no risk of disease. “We removed the flesh, air-dried the seeds, and then washed them in 10% hypochlorite, then 70% ethanol in a lamina flow hood, where we found the seeds germinated fine and preliminary screening revealed no indications of virus or other infections.”

As a result, P. baylisiana seeds are returning to their home area, and new trees are expected to emerge soon. It will take six to ten years for the seeds to grow large enough to begin flowering. The project will continue until 500 adult trees are viable.

This stage, according to De Lange, is exhilarating, but there is still risk. “Of course, this behavior ignores the reality that all seedlings come from a single tree,” he says, “so the species is severely bottlenecked,” implying that it lacks the genetic variety that could defend it against illnesses and other variables in the long term. “However, we do know that the species is polyploid, so it should be able to withstand a lot.”

Meanwhile, de Lange adds that his colleagues on the island haven’t been idle. Janeen Collings, a botanist with the Department of Conservation, has planted numerous cuttings near the original tree, and several of them have flourished and produced fruit with her help. “While most mature fruit was probably taken by birds, she was able to grab some and seed in the field,” de Lange explains. Despite the fact that the seedlings grew, they died after a year. “Despite the fact that the islands are essentially inaccessible and expensive to go to, and that to accomplish this type of work you need to visit three to four times a year,” de Lange says, “her work is extraordinary to say the least.”

Can you grow a dragon blood tree in the US?

The evergreen, palm-like dragon blood tree (Dracaena draco) has a gray trunk topped with sword-shaped green leaves and is commonly planted as a container plant inside. The tree barely grows 3 to 4 feet tall indoors, and it takes around 10 years to reach that height. Outside, dragon’s blood is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 through 11, according to Floridata. Birds (such as Onychognatus species) eat the berries, which distribute them. The seeds have a diameter of 4–5 mm and a weight of 68 mg on average. Dragon’s blood is a rich red resin produced by the berries.

The dragon’s blood tree, like other monocotyledons like palms, grows from the point of the stem, with long, stiff leaves borne in dense rosettes at the end (4, 5, 7). It branches at maturity to generate an umbrella-shaped crown, with leaves that reach up to 60 cm long and 3 cm wide. The dragon blood’s trunk and branches are robust and stout, with dichotomous branching, in which each branch separates into two halves frequently.

Is there a tree that bleeds blood?

Because it’s easy to carve, glues and screws well, and polishes well, the wood forms high-quality furniture. It shrinks extremely little when dried from the green state, and this property, combined with its excellent resilience, makes it ideal for boat building, canoe building, and bathroom flooring.

The tree is also harvested for its therapeutic properties. It treats disorders of the blood in humans. Everything from ringworm to eye disorders, stomach problems, malaria, and traumatic traumas can be cured with it.

Can a dragon plant live outside?

Dracaena variants are one of the most popular houseplants because they have beautiful leaves, available in a variety of sizes and colors, and are hard to kill. One definite method to destroy your dracaena is to grow it outdoors in a region that is too cold. Dracaena is a tropical plant that cannot be frost-hardened.

However, if you live in zone 9, 10, or 11, go for it. Dracaena grows well in frost-free environments. In the winter, Zone 9 can be a little dangerous. If you live in an area where frost occurs on occasion, be prepared to cover your outdoor dracaena plants with something.
