Madagascar’s Dragon Tree is an evergreen houseplant. It grows up to 20 feet tall in its natural habitat as a shrub or tree. It will grow 6-15 feet tall as a houseplant, although it can be trimmed to keep it shorter. After that, the top spiral of leaves can be rooted, and a new plant can be started.
The long, strap-like leaves wrap around the stem in a spiral, with the lower leaves falling off and creating characteristic diamond-shaped leaf scars. They’re a dark green color with a reddish edging. As a houseplant, it rarely flowers.
Plant in a loamy, well-draining potting mix. During the growth season, it requires medium moisture, but less during the winter. The optimal conditions for the Dragon Tree are bright indirect light and moderate humidity. If the humidity is too low, the leaf tips will brown.

It appears that it takes just as much effort to grow a dragon tree as it does to destroy that famous dragon. The slow-growing dragon tree takes about 8 to 10 years to achieve a height of 2 to 3 feet (0.5 to 1 meter), and 30 years to reach maturity. Only the very end of a dragon tree’s youngest branches produce new leaves. Those bare limbs slowly evolve into spreading pedestals for the leafy crown.

Dracaena marginata is a species of the broad plant genus Dracaena, which has a wide range of leaf sizes, colors, and trunk forms. Once developed, the marginata is one of the most commonly observed indoor plants that grows into an appealing plant and makes a superb focal point of a room.
When compared to other Dracaenas with arching leaves, the leaves of this Dracaena are rather slim. There are three types: one with a dark red outer edge and a green center, another with a green center with red and yellowish stripes, and a third with broad red margins. When the trunk sprouts stems (cane) from the side that need to be trained, the leaves appear (keeps them growing upwards). Because the Dragon tree’s stems contain a grayish brown bark (the trunk) that can also create smaller ones, the plant must be clipped to keep it from growing in all directions.
These are sluggish growers that can take up to 10 years to reach a height of over 5 feet, but once they reach that height, they look rich. They resemble palm tree plants in appearance.
Level of maintenance: The Madagascar dragon tree is one of the easiest house plants to cultivate, and it can take a lot of abuse before quickly recovering with the right conditions and care. The one I gave to my sister (who is roughly 5ft tall) over ten years ago was ignored more than cared for, but it is currently in excellent condition.
Leaves falling: Don’t be alarmed if your plant’s leaves begin to die and fall off at the bottom. This is natural, and it’s comparable to how yucca trees shed their bottom leaves to make room for new growth. Once you see that they are deteriorating in appearance, you can remove them.
This plant is poisonous to both cats and dogs. The issue with cats is that they enjoy nibbling on the leaves, as I discovered with my parents’ cats. Although they just nibbled a small quantity, my parents’ cats were alright. They probably think it’s a grass because the leaves are so thin. Dracaena marginata is one of the plants on NASA’s air filtration plants list (part of the NASA clean air research) that reduces benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene levels in the air.
How tall can a Dragon Tree get?
Dracaena family members are known for being low-maintenance houseplants, and the dragon tree is no exception.
While the colors of the dragon tree are most vibrant when planted near a sunny window, they can also thrive in a dark lair (see what I did there?). In all seriousness, the dragon tree is tolerant of low-light circumstances, even in Edmonton’s sun-deprived winter. Yours should be fine as long as there is some natural light in its surroundings.
The dragon tree isn’t finicky about soil types, but it does love to flourish. Your dragon tree can grow to be 6 feet tall if left unchecked. All power to you if that’s what you desire. If not, you might wish to trim the top growth a few times a year to keep it at a manageable height.
Because of its aggressive growing patterns, re-potting is likely to be the most time-consuming task you’ll face with your dragon tree. Throughout the year, the root system will joyfully slither through the drainage holes of your pots. Repot your dragon tree in the spring to a larger pot that can manage the size of its root ball.
Although the dragon tree isn’t a fire-breather (much to my dismay as a Game of Thrones fan), it nonetheless despises being soaked. When you water it, make sure to give it plenty of water so that its deep root system can thrive. Then, before watering again, wait until the top inch or two of soil has dried out. It’s preferable to slightly underwater your dragon tree rather than overwater it, as damp soil will do more harm than anything else.
Finally, this dragon enjoys dressing up. Give it a gentle bath in the bathtub a few times a year to remove the dust off its leaves. If dragging it to the restroom isn’t an option, clean the leaves with a moist cloth. This will not only keep it looking new, but it will also prevent dust from interfering with its capacity to synthesize what little light it receives.
How do you make Dracaena grow tall?
If left unpruned, Dracaena can grow to be quite tall (between 4 and 10 feet). Simply snip off the tops of the plants when they begin to grow out of boundaries, bringing them to the proper height. They’ll sprout again. The trimmed tops can then be rooted to produce more plants to give to friends. Simply soak the cut end in Miracle-Gro FastRoot1 Dry Powder Rooting Hormone and place it 1-2 inches deep in a small container of damp Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix. Water sparingly until the roots appear.
Can a Madagascar dragon tree live outside?
Madagascar dragon trees, which are native to tropical climates, flourish in temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and cannot endure temperatures below freezing. You should be able to successfully grow a Madagascar dragon tree outdoors if you are in USDA hardiness zone 10-12. Because these trees are temperature sensitive, keep them indoors, preferably in a well-heated room away from drafty windows, especially during the winter months.

Solution: Using tap water for your Dragon Tree is not suggested since it includes fluoride, which can hurt and eventually kill your plant. Filter the tap water in an open container overnight.
